My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding Cake | Irish Traveller Wedding

For gypsy traveller’s girls, their wedding day is the one day they get to feel like a princess…
In this video we meet 16 year old Noreen who, not wanting to lead a traditional traveller life, has a job as a wedding cake specialist; helping other traveller girls’ make their special day even more memorable by creating enormous bespoke cakes.
The gigantic castle cake Noreen is busy preparing is for 18 year old Irish traveller Bridget. We follow Bridget as she has a dress fitting and prepares for her wedding and married life ahead.

I respect her mum so much for going against tradition and facing the judgement and persecution from her community by divorcing her husband for the sake of her children, I'm not a traveller and I can never understand the extent of their beliefs but I can see the incredible strength that the mother has displayed to give the best life to her children, mad respect

I agree, but in most of the world- woman are 2nd class humans. Even in countries were women have equal rights- there isn't equality. Look what happens in America, canada, western Europe & Australia to women that report rapes. Or how many rapist see jail or repeat rapist of children that get out after a year. And those are the places were women have the most voice. In my lifetime it's become a crime to rape your wife. Women have only had the vote in those areas for 100 yrs. My mom couldn't were pants to public high school.

I actually used to work with traveller girls and they said that the programme is very accurate except for the grabbing. Out of all the gypsy weddings this one was my favorite so far! She had a tasteful dress and gorgeous cake. Give so much respect to her mother for being such a role model and removing her children from growing up in a home witnessing domestic violence. As far as that grabbing though - I would never tolerate anyone doing that to my daughter even if it was the thing to do.

I just want to reiterate what Traveller Myths has said. I'm a Traveller, born and bred. I've been to more Traveller weddings than I care to remember and I have not once seen anyone get violently "grabbed", nor have I heard of this so-called tradition. The nearest I've seen is a boy trying to talk a girl into a kiss, and maybe a bit of play-fighting, but nothing remotely like this... I can tell you, though, that if anyone manhandled a girl like that - particularly at a function with a lot of Travellers present - every man in her family (closely followed by every self-respecting man in the community) would be out defending her and teaching the lad a lesson he'd never forget. Sadly, just like every culture, domestic violence cases occur in our community. It's a human problem, not just a Traveller problem. But we absolutely, categorically do *not* encourage the grabbing and harming women. That is neither our tradition nor our culture.

To be clear, what you are witnessing on that show was as much of a shock to me as it was to you - & I'm a Traveller. I've been to countless weddings and functions and I have not once seen anything like this. The nearest we get is a boy trying to sweet-talk a girl, maybe try and sneak a kiss, and there might be a bit of playfighting - but *nothing* that's actually aggressive like that. A girl's reputation is hugely important in my community, so if someone grabbed her like that, her family would be out defending her in a heartbeat and the lad responsible would wish he'd never been born. I'm assuming it's been made up for TV, because this horrific, violent "grabbing" just doesn't happen.

  • @DustMoons

    2 жыл бұрын

@@DustMoons I suspect that the Gypsy you spoke to was right, because I've never seen it happen and I don't know anyone who has ever partaken in "grabbing". I know that anyone who attacked a woman like that in front of Travellers would rue the day they were born, though... This TV show has a lot to answer for... It makes me so angry that they describe it in the trigger warning as "an Irish Traveller courtship ritual". Firstly, we're not wildlife, we don't have "courtship rituals" (you can almost hear it in Attenborough's voice, can't you?! 😂) & secondly, that is no tradition of mine (& I come from a huge Irish Traveller family - none of whom have heard of it). The women in my family have always demanded (& received) respect. Have you ever seen the shots of the young girls dancing inappropriately on the show? I went to a wedding where they were filming and this is how they got the shots: they went over to a group of girls who were sat chatting and minding their own business (as kids at every type of wedding do) & asked them to dance "like they see in the music videos". They told them the best girls would be on TV and the very best girl would win £20. Told them they "wanted to show the world that Traveller weddings are fun". The girls were young and did it, believing it was innocent and positive... For about a minute, until one girl's Mammy saw, went ballistic, and put a stop to it. They chopped that tiny bit of footage of those 8 girls into little segments, cropped out the empty dance floor so it looked full if dancing kids, and sprinkled it throughout the reception footage to make it look like it was happening constantly at the wedding. Again, shock value for views, at the expense of our community's reputation 😕

ok so apparently this was played up for the show to make the culture more shocking. According to people in the comments who're actually part of the community they usually just pick you up and immediately put you down, to give you a little shock, then ask for a kiss which you can decline. I'm not saying that's right either but it's a lot better than what's being shown.

Okay, the "couples" whole demeanor at the wedding ceremony was heartbreaking. They looked both unhappy, forced and when she put the ring on his finger, it appeared as if she didn't want to touch him while he didn't really offer his hand. This is sad. Nobody seems to be ready for that marriage and yet everyoneet it happen.

Whilst a domesticated life is the norm for most Traveller girls, more and more families are allowing their daughters to make choices about their education and when they want to marry. I come from a Traveller family, I'm female, I didn't marry as a teenager and, instead, I went to university. I'm now a doctor working in the NHS, I love my job, and my family are really proud of me. After her children had grown up, my cousin (with the blessing of her husband) decided that she, too, wanted to restart her education. God willing, next summer she will graduate as a nurse. It wasn't that long ago that everybody lived in a trailer but now more and more Travellers live in houses. I very much doubt that we'll ever lose all of the old ways, but we're definitely evolving as a culture.

Stunning bride! 😍 and what a wonderful mother she has.... she said she was trying to give it back to her daughter, all because her daughter was/is there for her when she is in pain or sick, when she's already given her a life, and raised her to be a beautiful young lady with a heart of gold bless her, you did that Mum, no one else, you did! Congrats to the happy couples!

I always thought it would be much simpler to decorate the cakes at the wedding hall and put the extras on it there assemble it there so that there's less of a chance of catastrophe. I have a lot of respect for her mother, being in an abusive relationship in the past I know how hard it is to get away. Kudos to her for wanting better for her children.

I clearly understand that I will never understand their culture, beliefs, morals, education, etc… So with saying all of that I am glad that I am born and raised in America! I had a husband once that was very verbally abusive, emotionally abusive, spiritually abusive and it wears you down!!! I am so proud of the Mom of the ride to show that it can be done!! 💗💗💗

What's being born in America got to with it , there are types of cultures in the uk and Ireland. We don't have to understand their culture ,just respect their way .

@@lexiwilliams9422 why should we respect their way??? It is disgusting what they do to these young girls. Also non of them work and have these big houses and weddings, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out where the money comes from. Lived in Ireland for 14 years and travellers are the worst people I encountered in my entire life! Starting fights in city centre or an event few years back when they put a live horse on fire just for the laughs
