My Big Fat Gypsy Dress Drama

Dressmaker Thelma has to make a dress for a bride who won’t even tell her when the wedding is for fear of the venue finding out she is a traveller and cancelling the booking.
Within the traveller community, secrecy and vigilance is paramount when booking wedding venues. Their community has such a reputation that hotels, restaurants and function rooms would rather stay closed than host a traveller event.
It’s this prejudice and mistrust of the traveller community that has 17 year old bride-to-be Priscilla, and her family, extremely fearful…

Wish someone would just say it as it is. Travellers still experience prejudice because unfortunately there is proportionately a high prevalence of crime and other dishonest behaviour in the community. This makes it difficult for all travellers including honest travellers which is a real shame and the community needs to hold itself to account rather than expecting other people to ignore the obvious risk of doing business with a traveller.

The main reason why Travellers don't run their own venues is because, as soon as suppliers know it's a Traveller venue, they will refuse to do business with them. It'd also make it really obvious to other wedding suppliers (caterers, cake makers, florists, etc) that it was a Traveller wedding and they would refuse to do business with the couple. To answer the point about stopping places, the problem is mainly planning permission. Every time a council finds a suitable piece of land for a site, everyone local objects. This causes a shortage in legal stopping places, leaving Travellers with no choice but to set up illegal camps on parks etc. OP - Thank you for mentioning about your parents. Everything in the public domain about Travellers is negative, so thank you for adding some balance. To answer the FAQs before they're asked (not necessarily by you, OP, but someone always asks): Travellers stop on illegal camps out of necessity, not choice. This is because not having an address actually stops them being able to register for services (health and education, for example). They don't pay council tax because they can't - council tax is logged against properties, not individuals. No property/address = no bill. Rubbish on these illegal sites is there because most tips won't accept trade vehicles, such as the vans most Travellers have, or they insist on proof that you are a local resident (again, impossible without a proper address). They can't go on to "normal" holiday camp sites for three reasons: camp sites turn you away if they realise you're a Traveller; Travellers tend to have caravans slightly longer than normal ones (they need the space, it's their home) and camp sites know this, so they put a size limit on their bookings/pitches that excludes almost all Traveller caravans; and, because they know Travellers need to work, most holiday camp sites ban vans/trade vehicles from the site. Can't stay there if you can't work to pay the rent and put food on the table.

They HAVE already taken all the dresses....and also a whole selection of Thelma's OWN underskirts that she hires out separately to be worn with the dresses....so the bride has all the dresses already! Thelma was only traveling over to help dress them all and arrange all the layers in the correct order etc. After the wedding she'd have come back home bringing HER underskirts back with her! She has lost money on non returnable flight or ferry costs, too late to be refunded in full for hotel rooms she's booked, potentially lost out thousands on the cost of replacing all those huge layered underskirts which they've basically stolen off her at this point in time, and the biggest financial loss is that she has turned down other brides who wanted her to squeeze them in, who for example ARE getting married on the 30th, because they knew they'd be too busy adding the final dressmaking touches and finishes, wouldn't have underskirts for everyone to hire, and she'd be in Ireland that weekend anyway! Let's say the ACTUAL date of this wedding is actually 2-3 weeks later than they were told, she could have squeezed in one more wedding dress and fitting BEFORE this one, because they've been working flat out on this one's details to get it done in time. If she took them to court she can sue for loss of earnings... And you can imagine how many thousands and thousands that could amount to. Meanwhile other disappointed Gypsy brides have not been able to work with Thelma in time for their own wedding, so that mother has done fellow travellers a disservice too! But there's nothing for Thelma to put in the trash....they made sure they got everything THEY needed before lying to her! That's why the girl's bedroom is stacked with THELMA'S underskirts!

@@ZillasCoop it's mothers like that, that make people so wary of travellers to start with. And I know it's prejudiced to cancel venue bookings after finding out they're travellers, but with the way a lot of their gatherings end up in arguments and punch ups you can understand why owners wouldn't want to risk their beautiful wedding venue getting damaged, nor how the noise levels could upset other guests and leave the venue with a negative reputation. No, of course they don't all trash the places, nor do they all lie and use manipulation to ship over someone else's property, but those that do make the rest of their community suffer! They already had venues cancel on them, so they know what it feels like, but it's ok to do the same thing to Thelma. No wonder the mother didn't want her face on TV! Shy my arse! More like SLY!!! I can very very vaguely remember seeing this exact episode in full when it originally aired. My memory of it is minimal but I think the girl had no involvement with the arrangements the mother made, her Mum was paying for the dresses, so the girl didn't know about the financial agreement that was made. And I'm almost certain...in a fuzzy hazy memory, that Thelma calmed down afterwards and didn't take things further from a legal perspective. Even when she was seriously angry she was STILL trying to make sense of it through a travellers eyes! I'm sure it was resolved somewhat and Thelma was more understanding than that mother deserved!

By the time Thelma called her about the false wedding date, the girl had the wedding dress, veil, and all the bridesmaids dresses at her own house. She took them with her when she and her mother went back to Ireland after she tried on her wedding dress, and Thelma made the alterations needed. The girl showed the bodice of the wedding dress and the veil to the cameraman there in her bedroom.

Thelma has said more than once that she cannot, and will not, ever tell the price of the gypsy/traveler gowns because to do so would mean her death, literally. She would be killed for revealing the prices. I do know, from a couple of this kind of show I watched about 5 years ago, that some of the dresses can cost up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but that's all I've seen, no specific price anywhere.

She probably works with travellers because they spend insane amounts of money on not only brides dresses but bridesmaids dresses, party dresses, communion dresses, etc. they probably bring in most of her income. Also this is probably not an everyday problem for her. For the most part the girls have good manners and as she said, as long as they don’t ask her to dress them then she doesn’t care about the dates. The men seem to be the really aggressive criminal types, the girls seem to be much better mannered. Although she sure learned her lesson about the girls when she tried to teach them to be seamstresses and give them rules and make them work!! Lol. They didn’t take kindly to being told what to do. But that’s because they never have that kind of authority before.

Thelma could start her own venue, but I have question? How would Thelma protect that venue from the damage, fights, calling the police, etc.? I mean just the clean up and repairs could cause a delay for the next appointment. How would she get paid also, if they just disappear? You see, even with a traveler owned venue, same questions apply. There is a reason that some of them can afford all the bells and whistles of these elaborate weddings. Some honestly pay, but some don’t. There never seems to be a question about budget or costs. This is not about tradition or culture. It is about wanting something no matter what. It happens with the brides themselves in some instances and how a boy/man gets a girl. We can’t judge it in our understanding of things. We have to realize, just like telling lies, they see or excuse it in their culture to make it okay.

I know very little about the Travellers and for you to stick your neck out for them then go to search links of support to them and then make such beautiful gowns "OVER THE TOP" & SUCH EXPENSE!! I hope you finally or paid the money your owed! I don't buy it that they don't look at it is lying. People who lie do it habitually and they think there's no consequences. I know this because I had a woman who was the mother of my two grandsons habitually lie and she was so convincing that you wanted to believe her and you wanted to try to help her in anyway you could and she tell you she wanted to do better in her life & all the while she was scheming behind your back two run away and leave the babies time after time after time and she never met a word she said to you. And then she come back again and beg you to truster she was change and you'd fall victim to her stories and the babies would want their mommy to stay and love them and so once again you would do it all over just to have her treat him terribly again six months or a year later until finally after seven years my son said enough never again. You have to harden yourself against the lies and they know they're lying so I don't feel that people like that don't understand it, I think they use it as a way to manipulate others and get away with as little or as much as they can socially! I would just like to say to the bridal shop lady that your work was AMAZING, & YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF YOURSELF!! You did work like I have never seen before.
