In the premiere episode of Soul Food, a new series on MUNCHIES that explores the incestuous relationship between religion and food, British ex-pat Dawn O’Porter crashes a Greek Orthodox Easter festival, braids her own tsoureki, throws down in a traditional game of egg knocking, and falls in love with the delectable flavors of sacrificial lamb - all in the pursuit of culinary and religious discovery.

I'm a Palestinian Greek Orthodox myself, and all these traditions are part of my childhood and my adulthood as well: the lamb, the eggs (even though we play that game on Easter Sunday and with so many colorful eggs - not just red), the sweets... etc. I love this video, brings back so many memories.

She told her about the first Easter after WW2 rationing ended, which continued for much longer in parts of western Europe after the armistice than it did in other places, and how the little girls held on to their Easter dolls for that much longer that year, afraid that kind of good food would disappear again.

@@technokokos well its not about 3 or 5 meals per day and it's more about what you are allowed to eat, e.g meat or dairy aren't allowed and you can eat fish only on specific dates. Nevertheless if you really want to get technical and smart assy about it there is a type of feasting that can't be maintained for long that doesn't involve any drinking or eating and some more spiritual behavior that you ought to practice during that fasting ( I'm talking about black fasting )

Red eggs... In Australia I'm use to my eggs being that colour not the white as standard. Kind of interesting that they need to be dyed. P.s. people need to stop hating too.

It's so delicious when you grill the whole lamb over a charcoal fire while showing the head. On the other hand, certain Asians who eat dogs are called savages by Westerners. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of Greek food.
