MY $21K MONTH! How did I spend it all?? Physician Assistant Salary

I earned over $20,000 this past month as a Physician Assistant working in the Emergency Department. How did I allocate all that cash? This is a quasi-follow up from my original Physician Assistant salary video back in 2019 showcasing my best month to date.

    30-year EMPA here. Good on you for busting azz and making hay while the sun shines. Salaries have changed significantly over the 30 years I've been doing this - always going up. Found my niche in rural CAH EDs where they struggle to staff any providers so the $ is even better. I've been pulling down a consistent $21,666/mo for years now. They can't cut your hours if you are the only provider in town. I only wish I had known then what I know now about investing. I'd have retired years ago. Happy PA Week. It's a great time to be a PA.

  • @JohnThePA

    @JohnThePA

    2 жыл бұрын

    The employers I've been interviewing at openly admitted to me that they receive a ton of new grad applications and are very apprehensive of hiring a new grad into a bustling ER. Now they are shocked about how you guys have to adjust to COVID with more online learning and even rotations. I would emphasize the ability to learn quickly, ask questions, and know your limits. I would look for small community hospitals with low volumes or a teaching institution. If you have no luck, I've seen urgent care PAs land EM jobs after having 2-3 years of urgent care experience. Alternatively, you could look into an EM "residency" (hate that term) that actually has good didactics built in.

    I initially opened a Roth IRA with Vanguard in VTTSX before PA school when I wasn’t making much money and was contributing to that. Funny enough, I also had five figures in Pfizer which has been doing even better since the pandemic. Maybe 2-3 years ago I opened a Robinhood account with random stocks that have done well and dabbled a bit with some crypto (not a lot). My main contributions nowadays are in a diversified, target-date 403b account. You also can’t really go wrong with an ETF or mutual fund that follows S&P500 or general market like VOO or VTI (or that company’s equivalent fund). I could do a more in-depth video about how I started in the future but that’s the general gist so far.

    From a quick browse of clinical officers in Uganda it looks like a great healthcare experience but you may need 2-3 more biology classes and 2 chemistry classes with a lab component. Go to a PA school website and look at their required classes versus what you're earning for your degree. You will also need to set aside money for the application (CASPA) and travel for interviews

  • @JohnThePA

    @JohnThePA

    2 жыл бұрын

    You're going to lose anywhere from 25-30% of your income from taxes which amounts to tens of thousands of dollars a year. But this isn't exclusive to PAs... anyone making similar dollar amounts will have a near similar tax burden (unless you are able to leverage a bunch of tax deductions). Keep in mind I'm filing as a single individual and my state / locality charge income tax which amounts to just over 4% on top of the federal stuff.

  • @JohnThePA

    @JohnThePA

    2 жыл бұрын

    For me, it's like fearing a car accident while driving. Just by being on the road you're at risk but you can do numerous things to mitigate risk and protect yourself. If you're driving you wear a seatbelt, maintain your vehicle, stay focused on the road and drive defensively based on the weather conditions & traffic. For medicine, it's staying up-to-date with best practices, paying attention to red flags, good documentation, and not practicing recklessly. In both scenarios, if something unforeseen happens there's still insurance and lawyers. Likewise, there are numerous factors behind a lawsuit and I know of great physicians who have gotten sued despite doing everything they could.
