I own two 50 calibers along with several 44 black powder revolvers for this exact reason. When my other ammo runs out I have thousands of round balls and the means to create more.

If a Muzzleloader is all you can own for one reason or another whether it is you made mistakes in your past or you live in a tyrannical state or country it is better than nothing

I think there is another reason to own muzzleloaders: If center-fire components and smokeless powder become unavailable (I believe in a grid down scenario they will) those cartridges are precious and best saved for life saving self defense scenarios. Muzzleloaders are easier to procure supplies for in a primitive environment and more than adequate for basic defense and foraging.

amen. My cousin makes his own powder out of bat shit and some other stuff im not sure of the process lmao. Melts his own balls out of scrap and has flint for days in the mountains behind him. Hell be able to shoot forever. At least as long as bats keep shitting. @@brianalbee4153

For deep long term shtf, sounds like 50 cal flintlock would be the way to go

The old timers would slowly dribble molten lead in a contaner of water to make bird, and small game shot.

You said something about a bullet mold . .36 round ball for small game .45 for deer .54 for elk three rifles and .69 smooth bore for shot Birds on the wing. I cast for 45 caliber bullet for deer ( Lee R.E.A.L.)

I’d even venture to a 40 as a “do it all” caliber but ideally I’d have atleast a 40 and 36 with me

A 45 caliber Air Force Texan uses a .457 diameter round ball. You can also use the same round balls in a 44 caliber black powder revolver…

Most reproduction flintlocks suck because the geometry is off. The only fix is a replacement lock if it will fit. If the touch hole and the pan dont line up then you might as well go to a semi custom kit. As for that TC 56 smooth bore. Its a poor club and not much more. Too heavy to use as a shotgun.

For those with gunsmithing skill or the $$$ to hire one, a modern version of the Neeedle Rifle would be ideal. If my eyes had not failed me ending my career as a machinist I would have chosen a modified Chassepot designfiring a load consisting of two or three pelletized powder grains held together with a nitrocellulose based glue and to hold the bullet. Such a glue would also make the cartridge stiffer and water proof

Don't forget to get ball molds lee makes good molds and can be found at reasonable prices but with the shortage of aluminum they will be getting more expensive another option is to make you own molds out of aluminum

I know this vid is 3 years old but I believe I can weigh in on the topic. Having been on the country homestead now going on 3 years, I can tell you that redundancy (backups) to all critical systems is a must. Ie .. I can heat my cabin using 4 different methods. Hawken style muzzleloaders are protected under the "antique firearms" law. That means when the feds come to collect all those nice little AR style rifles, which most of you will hand over willingly, you better have something else to get you by. Furthermore, I can feasibly see our commie in chief going after all cartridge style firearms in lieu of recent events (Canada is already trying). If it happens, you had better have some that are off the books .... or something that was never on the books to begin with. Something off the books which has a specific law protecting it from ATF authority is even better ... like the traditional muzzleloaders and replicas. Furthermore, a backup to that should also be in your bag of tricks ... a good recurve bow for example. Practice with it now before you need to use it.

Guys like you are always projecting. " which.most of you will hand over willingly ". What you really mean is thst YOU will do it. But you need to make yourself feel better . Illinois just proved that almost all Americans wont surrender or even register their guns. And i love how you act like your muzzleloader is protected under federal law and the "shiny little ar15 " isnt. Sit down my guy... its okay if compliance is your thing. But stop acting like the rest of us dont have a backbone
