I thought socialist/ communist parties, frowned on firearms, at least for the common man?

There seems to be some contention on the subject just as there is among non-socialists/communists, however there are a growing number among the pro-defense category perhaps given the current socioeconomic conditions of the world today. Karl Marx said on the issue : "Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.” So I'd say that pretty much sums up the position.
