It seems like, even if something really bad did actually happen, an old-school muzzleloader would simply be more versatile than a modern gun. The powder itself is what I'm thinking about, as it's much easier to make black powder by yourself than any smokeless powder.

It actually is. I made a pound of powder last week and it is perfectly functional. It's taken a few years to get the formula just right, and to realize and acquire the tools I really needed and find or build them, but I can finally say I make my own fully functional powder. I doubt it is as good as factory made powder, but it passes my pressure and penetration tests. I can say it is a tad bit "dirtier" than Goex, ok, much more dirty, but so what?So I have to swab between shots. I killed 4 squirrels with my powder in my .36 flintlock rifle. So there it is.

What about black powder shotgun shells?

I totally agree about prepping for hard times rather than some sort of urban combat fantasy. While I do have modern arms, a box of 20 rounds of hunting ammo sets me back 30-40 dollars! Who would have ever thought! A pound of 2f Goex is about 25 dollars. Using 80 grains in my Pedersoli Brown Bess musket, that gives me 87 shots to the pound of powder. If I use my .36 calibre flintlock squirrel rifle with 25 grains of 3f Goex, I can get 280 shots per pound of powder. What's not to love!? Where I live we are over run with healthy, plump squirrels. A .177/ .22 airgun is an effective, silent harvester of meat. Ten dollars for 500 shots per tin of pellets is very economical. I also have a nice little 160 draw weight crossbow that is silent and effective on deer and wild hogs. Great video! I subscribed to your channel! Best regards, MiF

Thanks for the comment and the sub. I'm havering a long barreled .32 flintlock pistol made for me. Its a target pistol but it will be great for squirrel, groundhogs, and maybe coyote.

I mentioned this in a Facebook group the other day and was laughed at. People saying it’s too much to haul around 2 different guns if you had to be mobile having a defensive weapon and a flintlock.

I cut my teeth on black powder firearms. My dad got me hooked and I am so glad he did.

Major ammo shortage in December of 2020 right now. I picked up a Hawken in ,50 caliber. You can get powder, caps and balls still. Not a bad hunting option. Just saying.

I use olive oil for cleaning and lubrication of my flinter. Works like a charm.

That is a VERY wise choice! The old timers used olive oil, they called it "sweet oil" back then. I've been using olive oil exclusively since the late 1990s and it works perfectly!

I like hunting with black oowder. We have a special season, there arent many people in the woods. Everybody has one shot so they are very carefull with it. As you say they are cheap to shoot. Especially if you cast your own balls and Shoot a flintlock. In a survival situation the report isnt nearly as loud as a modern shotgun or rifle. A double barrel 12 gauge with a round ball in one barrel and a handfull of fishing sinkers in the other will do for self defence. John Davis jax fl

yes the most common ones you will run into are .32, .36, .44/.45, .50, .54, .58, .62, .68, .70, .75 and all the way up to a .95 for a blunderbuss. my next one will be a Germanic Jaeger rifle that takes a .62 cal round ball. i do want to get a flint lock smooth ore Fowler because you can shoot shot or round ball out of them. Good for small game and large.

The log cabin has some decently priced squirrel guns every once in a while. I've wanted to pick one up for years but I've switched to wanting a smooth boor Fowler.

Yes doomsday preppers makes us all look bad. In my opinion a real prepper would never go on a tv show and expose there preps. I believe that knowledge and experience is far more important than owning 50 firearms. Dont get me wrong it sure helps but a majority, not all preppers but a majority believe that having lots of guns, ammo and MRE's is the only thing they need. and thats not the case. A shotgun seems like a much wiser choice. You can reload spent shells easily enough.

It doesn't have a make or model. The stock is hand made and the lock is the only thing with any markings. The barrel is steel so it is modern but old with extremity deep rifling. So it was made for use with a round ball and a very thick patch. The trigger is forged Iron and someone inlaid antler into the back of the stock. It's not something your going to be able to find for sale anywhere but there are plenty of guns like it. The website "track of the wolf" is a good source.

Most flintlock rifles had cone barrels, which means the bore was cone, and they never used ball starters in the old days, that's a modern tool.

That's only partially true. It really depends on who you are talking about and at what time. For the most part people didn't but they were also often using undersized balls. European Jager rifle troops did use a starter. It was part of their loading procedure. Not really sure why but i suspect it's because they used very tightly fitting balls. Which makes sense because they also used a heavy metal ram rod that they carried separate from the rifle. Exactly what you need with a very tightly fitting ball. A lot of things we do with black powder are modern but we have just developed better ways of doing things. We don't often admit it but a lot of the things they did historically were not good ideas. It was common at points in history for people to shoot cut square pieces of lead instead of a round ball. No good reason to do it other than it saves time. No one ever shot patched round ball out of a musket or fowler back in the day but it's common now.

self sufficient is the best way to go when becoming a survivalist or prepper. Although you can buy thousands of bullets it will go fast, this is coming from a combat veteran. In one single gun fight up close in personal you could probably shoot 10 to 15 rounds very fast. During a mass chaos situation you will probably dishing out over 100 rounds in one day to keep the crazies away. Also with needing so much ammo moving around would be impossible if you want to take your ammo. A vehicle will just become your coffin. Anyways Flintlock muzzle loaders although can one dish out a max of 6 rounds per minute if your average or good, you can make your own ammo and gunpowder very easily. Making primer is difficult for the bullets now a days and blasting caps from toys will only get you so far. In saying this muzzle loaders will keep you from taking the fight to the bad guys but will offer a form of protection and mobility.

I have the 45 and the 54 cap lock and new Army 1858 they are so much fun and you can shoot all day i love making my own round ball and powder and they are so accurate i love to one day hunt game with them you can only hunt here with bow so i have to find a place i can

Why I don’t own a black powder rifle. I have had the opportunity to shoot quite a few percussion and flintlock black powder rifle’s. They are very accurate accurate heading to softball at 100 yards is really easy

@vandohky Not sure off hand and I'm in Baltimore for a week so I can't measure it. It's actually to big for me. I hunt with my .50 hawken because this one is a bit to big. I'm only 5'4" and where a small glove. Fun to shoot at the range though.

I don't believe in prophecies or superstition of any kind. I also don't think that a civilization that couldn't wrap their heads around the concept of the wheel has anything relevant to say in the modern age. That's silly.

@mckwilly It's not sporting and violates the spirit of the traditional season. It's like bringing a car to a horse race.

I think I'm going to get myself a flintlock, as those are the only firearms one can get in my country without any sort of license. Even the reproductions are awfully pricey though. Strange how you can get a beautiful semi-automatic SKS for under $300, yet you're looking at a minimum of $500 for a flintlock, whether it's antique or made last year.

$500 is cheap for a flint lock unless you get a Thompson center or something like that. The flintlock I'm shooting in this video is worth $800-$1,000 US and if you get a custom gun you can easily spend $5,000. Even a nice parts kit with a stock will run you $1,000.

How are we nuts? It's not like we haven't been around forever. People are just jumping on to the movement in mass because of the recession. Before that no payed attention to us. O and that ridiculous show. "Dooms day preppers" makes us look nuts. They find the fringe nut jobs and make it out like we are all like that.

That's t true. it might be illegal in your state or city. However according to the ATF you can make it for use on your own property. You just can't sell it without a license.

It's not legal to make your own powder? How is that possible? I can see on a local level re hazardous material concerns...but on a federal level? I don't see how a free person in a supposedly free country can not prepare his or her own propellants...no?? BTW I would THINK one would actually want their prepper rifle made in stainless steel??

According to the ATF you legally make it for your own use on your property. However quite a lot of states and cities ban production of any explosive or any kind without the right zoning and permits. Also why would you want it stainless? Steel holds up just fine. I've fired steel guns that are over 100 years old. They take very little in the way of maintenance to keep running just fine especially with non corrosive powder. I've got a German K98 that was drug all over Europe in ww2 and is still just fine.

@mckwilly I don't like the inline guns. I'm trying to get a ban on them for the "traditional" season in my state. We're getting a petition together. The inlines are modern rifle that preform like modern roles so they should only be used durring rifle season. I

A muzzleloader would be THE LAST gun on my list for a "prepper" situation, but you guys live in lala land anyway, so...makes perfect sense. No,...I can't help myself. F'n NONSENSE! In this day and age, prepping with a primitive firearm is not prepping at all. A 22 revolver would be higher on my list than one of these relics. Get real.

Can’t make .22lr. You can make black powder. And ball ammo. In fact the channel cody’s lab did it from scratch on KZread. Actually you can make just about everything on a flintlock except the main spring if you need to repair it. If you have a forge (which I do.) you can make everything yourself.
