The guy is what this world needs at this moment in time. Nearly every reactor tells something about themselves, it has the power to make people understand each other. We all have that doubting voice in our heads, but I've never been able to express it. He's gone global, there is a new reaction video every 10 minutes. How will the msm deal with an independent artist who isn't even in the country. I'm looking forward to seeing how they deal with him, he may open eyes to how the world actually works.

Man, there is so much more Ren to discover. You gotta hear “Sick Boi”, “Chalk Outlines” duet with a phenomenal singer called Chinchilla, the trilogy of Jenny, Skreech, and Violet. Then listen to his latest which is his retake of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony”. All pure genius. What this guy serves up is a once in a lifetime type of creative artistry.

Yes, I would add to Phil's comment. I first came across Ren as the leader of a stunningly good rock band, busking on the street, The Big Push. There's masses of excellent stuff there of a completely different genre to this. I hadn't realised that he'd been ill for most of his adult life (you'd never guess from the high energy busking performances). That monologue to camera at the end of this piece is pretty much autobiography. Misdiagnosed Lyme's disease left him with auto immune problems, psychotic interludes and a myriad other health issues. Since the demise of The Big Push (which was a major part of his life for 5 years) we've been seeing a lot more of this journey into rap/performance poetry and vivid story telling. Just hope that the treatment he's getting in Canada right now is successful. He deserves the right to develop this talent.

@@steveogreact Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla is really good, the trilogy of Jenny & Screech + Violet is probably the best thing he has ever done. Make sure you watch them in that order so you get the impact of the twist at the end!

Here is a little bit about his background, in case you don't know already. I gathered it from an old newspaper interview and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician born in Wales on November 26, 1991. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which lead him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren and not pull a "Sony" on him as he undergoes his treatment. Great reaction. "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 4 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live in a single take (although not necessarily the first take). His latest release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. I saw this for the first time some days ago. So raw and expressive! A lot of lyrics so I really have to focus to get it all, but there is so much truth in there. So much wisdom! ”…it was a pendulum eternally swaying from the dark to the light and the more intensely that the light shone the darker the shadow it casts. It was never really a battle for me to win it was an eternal dance. Like a dance, the more rigid I became the harder it got. The more I cursed my clumsy footsteps the more I struggled. So I got older and I learned to relax and I learned to soften and the dance got easier”. Beautifully expressed I think!

It's So far ahead of the game Ren has Moved the goalposts with this one... There are era defining songs (such as Bohemian Rhapsody), I feel Ren has cemented his place in musical history.

Ren has several songs in a similar storytelling style mixed with some singing, but he also has pure rap tracks, some with the guitar, some with more produced tracks. I also like the rawness of his performance, together with his great talent and message of course!

His back catalog includes rap/hip-hop, reggae, amazingly haunting vocals and his specialty: "bardcore". Welcome to the Ren Rabbithole. It's nice down here 🥳

@J Hoop Hahaha, I can always try but I really suck at memorising lyrics. Intricate melodies and horn lines? No problem, but lyrics? Yeah, it's in one ear and out the other as if there was absolutely nothing in between to stop it. 😅🤪

His solo songs do tend to be performative stories or rap-focused. But there is a lot to discover with Ren. You might enjoy seeing him singing and performing live with The Big Push on the streets of Brighton. "The Big Push - I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" and "Wade in the water / Nina simone / Trouble so hard" are good jumping off points to see him in a truly live, band situation. Or really just choose any cover song you like. The Big Push's originals are good too, and overlooked by the reaction community to see a more fun, traditional indie-rock and roll side of Ren: "Why My Woman" and "Watch Out" have both official videos and live performances online. If you do get dragged into the Ren rabbit hole, a good place to continue is with the Full tales of Jenny and Screech (with Violet's Tale at the end), with more great (but extremely dark) storytelling on a nylon-string guitar. Amazing "one-take" performances. "Chalk Outlines", especially the live version with Chinchilla is very moving, and just two voices and an electric guitar. I particularly like The Money Game videos, part 1 for acoustic and visual performance, part 2 for musical production and narrative. He's the first generational talent I've come across in a long time.

You are on your way to recognising Ren's creativity, talent and brilliance. I have been watching Ren performing live for seven years and it is great that he is finally going global. Another great thing about his music is that it is encouraging other people to discuss and share their own mental health issues. The stigma is melting, slowly but surely. Also, I could be wrong but I think the Oooo’s were bookended like that to be representative. In the beginning it was that the negative voice had reared it’s ugly head while he was in treatment (the wheelchair and hospital gown representing that) and was feeling well enough to pick up his guitar and work on his music. And then again at the end to represent his strength to stand up and play with wild abandon when he overcame those negative voices. Every last thing we saw was meaningful and strategic, masterfully so.

Chalk outlines has been playing on repeat since i heard Hi Ren. Its unbelievable. So are all of his other songs. This kid is TALENTED.

In my opinion, the first thing I notice is that each "character" has a different strumming pattern. The evil Ren strums with the slap percussion while the calm Ren just strums. In the very beginning, the hooting is done over the calm Ren strum. The ending hooting is done with the chaotic strum pattern that was introduced when the evil Ren took control for a bit. For me that signifies his duality and, in the end, ability to synthesize both personalities.

He is also switching from a minor key (evil) to a major key (hope) and a diminished chord for the pattern between the final side of evil and his winning the final verse. Pure genius of tonal emotions.

Really blows my mind he does these live..he is so good at every aspect of music. Dudes like him only come around once in a while..for one rapping while playing acciustic? I play guitar to and challenge anyone to do that,very..very difficult.

Ooo you need to watch more of Rens stuff as he is talented and multi faceted as an artist. I would suggest the Jenny and Screech tales (full) trilogy, Money Game pt1&2, Genesis (acoustic) his collabs with Sam Tompkins (Blind Eyed) or Chinchilla (Chalk Outlines or How to be Me) or his time with the band The Big Push (Bongo Bong, Lonely Boy or War Pigs)

Don't go into any Ren video expecting a certain sounds, as he does a lot of genres and styles. You would probably like the band he is in that do covers busking, but it is their take on the songs. 'The Big Push'. My theory on the 'ooo oo's' is that he is happy singing along, and then the voice of doubt comes in, after the battle of wills he goes back to singing, but more victoriously. Whatever it is, I like it.

If you want musicality try his band The Big Push. Wade in the Water is a good one. Keep in mind, he doesn't normally play Bass.

I have no clue how long this has been in my watch later. Great analysis and you pointed out things that dozens of other reactors haven't.

There are so many cool songs and pieces by Ren that are more musical and produced. Well worth checking out more!

My understanding is that it was actually multiple Takes and this video is the 4th Take. It was done with 3 cameras set up and one of the cameras was picked up and handheld at the end. Ren is in a class all by himself, there's NO ONE out there doing what he does. He's a Singer, a Rapper, a Musician, a Composer, a Songwriter, a Storyteller, an Actor.....an Artist. You MIGHT be more interested in his work with a band, "The Big Push". Most of their videos are live Busking (Street Performing) concerts. Ren has a story, and has shared it on his youtube community page, I'll let him tell it in his own words. Suffice it to say that he's had his unfair share of trials in his life, and yet he's able to create beautiful works of art. Most people see his guitar as a single cutaway classical guitar, and his style being somewhere between Flamingo (his finger picking style) and 16th/17th century Court Bard.....in fact he's identified what he does as "Bardcore". I realized what you said about what you gravitate to as far as music....BUT, if you listen to one more piece by Ren, I suggest "Jenny and Screech's tale (in Full)" that is a 3 song/act masterpiece with some truly incredible guitar playing from Ren....all 3 videos ("Jenny's Tale", "Screech's Tale" and "Violet's Tale" ) are all done Live, in one long shot. He's an absolute Genius at storytelling.

Thanks, John. As someone who has worked in theater, music (including busking, but studied classical) has played multi-instruments, worked in different genres, writes music, writes lyrics and poetry and prose, studied film-making and audio, all in ways much, much less explored than Ren has done here in this one nine minute video, and is old as F, I can say this: Steve missed a lot of details that marks this one video as a gamechanger for Ren, and for music performance. I have never dropped my jaw at first viewing (Violet's Tale). I have never felt the world stop spinning one way, and turn around, for anything. Until Hi Ren. As I wrote earlier, I am old. I am jaded. I had surrendered to mneh. Then Ren. I have heard several people say these exact words: "An iconic moment." Or "seminal" moment. They got it. I have kept company along the way with musicians and performers from beginners to the famous. And I mean, world famous. No one like Ren. No one. An actor friend summed his first hearing up, perfectly. "Hello Da Vinci." And the phrase I have read or heard the most is "going down the rabbit hole." Which is right on. BTW, trivia: The beginning and ending vocalise in the music is a practice vocalise I did when studying classical singing. He changed the tune of it a bit ( the exercise sticks to a scale progression) and really filled in out with the harmony, but it is an exercise to help breathing. I don't know if Ren learned this to help with breathing issues during his illness, but it helps strengthen the diaphragm. It certainly was a fantastic surprise for me -and I went back to doing it when Hi Ren reminded me! ;)

Trust me... you'll be shocked/entertained for Sure!!! The Mans a Genious!!! Shots All his videos live, and in One Shot usually! Also... you can see his guitar improve over the 7 years from the first to the last!

I think that the melodic part at the start and at the end was the eternal dance between dark and light.

I think that Ren uses unique cord and key changes like he is taking you to a new chapter in a book using these changes along with his cadence changes in tone or rhythm- talented

The way I perceive the choice for the early, "Ohh Ooh Ooh," part is that it is an indication of his authentic musical self; it is the song he would release to the world. Then he had to fight his shadow self, not to win, but to accept and integrate it. So when he finally returns to that early part, it is more vibrant, joyful, yet with the same chromatic dissonance that was always present. He found fulfillment in it even though it was shadow infused.

I will give you this. You are the first commentator I have listened to or read - out of thousands of comments since I started following Ren in September 2022 - that had a five on the scale reaction to Ren. Most are 8 to 10 - to above. I have not yet read anything lower than yours on a relative scale. Might you have missed a few things by looking for what you usually listen for? Just a thought.

I love how his opening vocals sound kind of strange and silly at first, but by the time he reprises the same vocals at the end, it's a full-fledged epic song of victory and sounds perfect

the opening guitar and vocals portray melodic tones followed immediately by discordant tones foreshadowing the dual personas

Perhaps try 'Chalk Outlines' to see another side of Ren.

The beauty of Ren and his performances is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to know what to expect. This is a mind-boggling punch right in the head and heart 🤯 💔 ending with a powerful, resonating message of inspiration and hope ❤️‍🔥 🙏 ❤️‍🩹 Absolutely love it! 💞

Ren story is he was bitten by a tick and contracted Lymes disease they didn’t pick it up and told him it was all in his head and treated him for mental illness for years. They drove him into psychosis, finally picked it up he has had Stem cell treatment and has been fighting to be well and still is. His music is amazing, Sick Boi is next it relates to this and has done various other Rap,a trilogyand has worked with others The big push is one, Chalk outlines is beautiful. go down this rabbit hole man you will love it!

If you see this as a play, the first vocal performance is "the Intro" - setting the scene, if you will; the final is then "the Outro" - especially noting the combination of the lighter & heavier tones (from his dialogue) as the victorious finale... the spoken piece, offered more for personal clarification.

This needs to be written into a stage play, by ren, nobody else! xD

So super interesting. I love the creativity, and he is a ridiculously talented guitarist to boot! I’m definitely intrigued to hear more. I am thankful we are in a time where we can bring mental illness conversations out in the open through art.

There’s a lot to be said about his guitar playing in connection to the song. From the heavy plucking in the intro to the softer plucking that follows. Again heavy plucking when the dark voice comes out to lighter playing on his normal side. The dissonant chord choices and the chromatic build up. All adding tension, uneasiness and resolve.

Ren is amazing!!!

I don't know if there is an official explanation for it but one of the ways I have come to interpret the vocalization in the beginning and the end is that they are part of a creative expression that is interrupted by the inner dialog, the conflict resolves and the creative expression continues and completes.

REN reminds me so much of Hua Chenyu. Both are musical geniuses. And both draw you into the story they are telling, with not just the music, but the performance. The vocals, musical arrangement (and in Hua Chenyu's "Fake Monk" some beautifully in tune... screaming 😲). kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZaOmm9B7YayuZ6Q.html REN and Hua Hua are both amazing musicians who don't want boxed up into one genre. They can do multiple genres, so you never know what you are going to get next (often multiple genres in the same song) . I really like REN doing Nina Simone style music with the band (The Big Push) he plays in... so different from this. Equally Hua Chenyu composes/arranges, and plays multiple instruments in Rock/Metal, Rap, Reggae, Pop, SynthPop, Electronic, Accoustic, Ballads, Traditional Chinese, Broadway and on and on. Recommend "Nunchucks" as fun intro ... (not in my personal Top 50 Hua Chenyu Performances, but shows SOME of his abilities). kzread.info/dash/bejne/noCnj5J6YNyrpaQ.html (Yes, it's Jessie J. backstage) I'd given up on Western music for over the past 20 years, and discovered Hua Chenyu 7 years ago, and like with REN, blown away by the constant evolution of his music. We need a diet other than the repetitive blandness of the last 20 years we have been force fed by big Music moguls, Producers and "Talent" shows.

Would normally recommend "Nunchucks" as a fun intro (even if I don't have it in my personal Top 50 Hua Hua Performances). "Dad I'm home" was just next level heart wrenching. Great hulking male Reactors reduced to tears watching that. Sadly they've removed the original, live version with English subtitles, and just left sideshow or fan cam of it with subtitles. You NEED the subtitles. But you absolutely need.. LIVE not sideshow. As to The Hu... "HU, HU, HU". 😉 Love "Wolf Totem original (not Jackoby Shaddix collaboration)." Women's Song (either original or with Lzzy Hale), and Chinggis Khan. And "Yuve, Yuve, Yu" collaboration with Danny from From Ashes to New is probably their best collaboration. (Probably only Metal band on the Planet to have all been trained at a Conservatoire of Music). And... "HUs in the kitchen".. 👍😂 (Great name for a series). Then there is Hanggai, Tengger and Ayanga. That entire performance was ONE continuous take with multiple cameras to change angles LIVE. That video was the final round of 4 total attempts at recording all of it, as you just saw it, start to finish with NO EDITS. How you just watched it is how it was recorded. People behind the cameras switched angles and the lights, "on the fly," as Ren performed the piece. One detail I noticed was that, on the floor, Ren cast a very dark, very black shadow toward his "darker" side and the shadow opposite was much lighter, more translucent.

You asked why he did that thing with his voice at the start and at the end. This is my theory. He's alternating between two notes. Which I think reflects what is about to happen. And at the end more reflects the pendulum he speaks of. I could be wrong but that is my theory.

Poetic speech accompanied by guitar = rap.

It's a "flamenco guitar." It is very similar to a classical guitar but with lower action for faster play and a clear pick guard to protect the top from strumming. He is tuned in drop D.

The weird Ooo Ooo at the end where the lights were flickering symbolized the battle between good/evil, Satan/Jesus, good Ren/bad Ren. The lines at the end where he says "face to face with the beast, I will rise from the east and settle on the ocean floor were lines from Revelations in the Bible. "As above so below" what is in the heavens is also inside us. Jesus was Hope and the voice you hear when you "loosen the noose on the rope"

I always wonder at his choice for beginning and end. It may be me entirely projecting this on but I hear him using "Going Cuckoo" as a representation of "Psychological Warfare" He begins that way because it's just him crazy with no context. He portrays the battle with that voice of doubt and depression, then at the end he says he'll never back down .. After he returns to that battle in his mind that makes him look crazy, only now we can comprehend the warrior fighting the fight, the man dancing the dance. Rather than just someone in an asylum. I assume the pig mask at the beginning was a "Pig is the butcher" more on the nose representation of the mind destroying trying to destroy iteself.

Live in 1 take. Only the camera angles were edited in. He uses the rooms acoustics and nothing is added to make it sound better. Just like most of his music which makes it all the more impressive. This one-take thing has been circulating but it's not correct in the case of Hi Ren. If you go to Jonathan Hiller's (Filmmaker Reacts) reaction to Hi Ren, you'll see Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed it, explain how they did it.

Could just be me, but the opening and closing OOOoooo's have the sound of a cuckoo clock...echoing the mental state of the song.

I've been looking back at some of your Aurora reactions and have noted that you like the 'her and piano' songs ... Back in 2020 she did a delightful short charity concert at Ole Bull Scene in Bergen. I'm uncertain as to why he did the vocal the way he did it, but I can say the effect of it's return at the end is emotionally impactful to many people.

You know, your not the first one to mention the why of the intro/outro part. Something just hit me when you asked tho. Just a thought.... The first time around, he just got rolled in. Still seated. Neck veins popping. Looking down at the instrument. Now, at the end, he's made his journey. Made his peace with both sides of himself. Now whole-ish, he can revel in the Melody. Embrace it like you have to embrace your whole self. The good. The bad. The ugly. I don't know, he just kind of makes you think. A lot😊

I agree with folks suggesting Sick boi (rap/banger) and Chalk Outlines (beautiful duet). These two will give you a bit of an idea of his creative range and definitely skew more musical than Hi Ren. Besides you need to keep watching him cause like they say in Zoolander "He's so hot right now" with the viewership. ttyl

I think a normal guitar would shred your fingers if you strummed it like that without a pick. As far as the humming goes, it’s the same tune but different energies. Initially, he sounds hesitant but it becomes a celebration at the end.

You know, that you can pause the vid if you want to say something? :P

One of the things that sets you apart from most others, is the fact that you dont 'butcher' songs by interrupting them, highly recommendable.

Singing in 2 different voices, acting 2 different characters, as well as a playing 2 different tunes all in one take. Just think about how difficult that is.

I hope you take the time to go back and listen to this from a "human interest" perspective instead of a technical dissection perspective. You seem to have completely missed (or intentionally ignored) the impact.
