I would suggest one rethink of your final thoughts if I may be so bold, but I mean no rudeness whatsoever... I don't think he's acting even one iota, but rather, he's letting us in completely and without condition. That inner dialog is represented so perfectly, IMHO, that I can't imagine it being anything other than 100% genuine. Just my two cents. Definitely enjoyed your reaction. Cheers!

Having been obsessively trawling the internet for a couple of weeks now, looking for reactions to this piece of artwork, I can say that I have found about 30 reactors I'd never heard of. This in addition to the many I already watch who have posted their reactions to this. Out of those dozens, only about 3 were a disappointment, and they were predominantly vocal coaches who couldn't stop focusing on how he sang in order to listen to WHAT he sang. You got it from the very beginning, and I truly enjoyed watching this reaction video. You are, in fact, one of the first to make it a point to praise his acting skills so highly, though a few others have made off-hand comments about it. No one yet has made much comment about the set itself, which seems to lend itself so perfectly to the feel of this piece. Or about how he didn't "resolve" the final note of the guitar accompaniment, though it gets my attention every time. I also read 90% of the comments other people leave on the reaction videos, so I've learned a huge amount of background info on Ren's problems and the misdiagnosis that has damaged him so much. One of his sung lines, "I've stood in the fire that cremated my brain" is a powerful reference to the actual physical damage he's taken from the years of wrong medical treatment. Thank you for your contribution to the understanding of this piece of brilliance.

I have watched hundreds of 1st reactions to Ren and the amazing thing is that in approx. 50% of these, the reactor(s) start to talk about their experiences or those of relatives/friends. I've been watching every HI REN reaction video that I can find, looking for someone that got the same message I did from the ending vocal part of the song. You're the first person of all of the reactions I've seen that pointed out the lights flashing during that apparently triumphant dance/vocal segment at the end. The song stops, and then he explains it for us. But it seems most people miss the message of those flashing lights and him repeating the same vocal performance. Even when he tells us what it means. The pendulum is swinging. We see him defeat the voice with the power of hope BUT the flashing lights indicate that it is only for a brief time. His happiness in that moment is just a part of the eternal dance. If the song had continued, the next verse would have started "Hi there Ren! It's been a little while, did you miss me?" That's is what he is trying to tell us. Not that he defeated the voice, but that he will never "defeat" the voice. He can, however, learn to co-exist with it - to relax - to soften. Let the voice rage. Let it abuse him. He is stronger than that voice and can be "broken and beat" but he will always rise and stand on his own two feet. Until he is no more, and then his music will rise for him. Hearing you talk about your own wife's struggle explains to me why you picked up on that message, IMHO. You've seen the pendulum swinging, and even in the good times, you suspect - or even know - that the bad is not gone. It is dormant - maybe for hours or weeks, maybe for years - but it is always there "in the periphery". If you play this song on repeat, then you will get the message. The song is eternal, because the dance is eternal. Or maybe I'm just being pretentious?

“Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work.

YESSSSS! I've been waiting for someone to notice that the lights are only flickering when the darker side is speaking. So many reactions, so few picked up on it. If you look at the floor, you'll see there are also two shadows.... one darker than the other. Incredible attention to detail. Did you also notice in his singing at the very end, your ear is looking for a final note that doesn't come? Like it's not over... I think that's on purpose, the eternal dance... the vocal leaves you waiting for that last "ooooh" there. I vote you go down the Ren rabbit hole....

I’ve seen way too many reactions to this, over 50 and some have noticed the lights during the song but he is the only reactor that noticed the lights were still flickering at the end. A lot of reactors think he’s won the battle, but that is not how this all works, he has integrated his “shadow consciousness.” (Carl Jung, psychiatrist, philosopher). It’s just like you said, the song doesn’t finalize, it’s an eternal dance. They have to work together, but the hopeful Ren has to have the strength to not let the shadow overtake him while also not fighting against it and remembering to relax.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from an old newspaper interview and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales in 1990 or ‘91 (depending on which source you cite), he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which lead him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren and not pull a "Sony" on him as he undergoes his treatment. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

I liked Panda noticing that at this last singing part the lights are flickering also though his calmer self is singing. If you tie this to that long reverb tail you mentioned: As the tail fades, the lights stay stable again. The tail is like a last breath of his "inner Gollum" that tried to maintain his grip on him by the flickering lights, because his voice had no power anymore to reach him. I guess that's why they put it so clearly audible up front. So many amazing nuggets in this.

My favorite line in this song is, "I stood in the flames that cremated my brains and I didn't once flinch or shake, so cower at the man I've become...". Such a strong and powerful way to relate strength. I also feel the most overlooked part of this is, "there are no real winners or losers in psychological warfare, but there are victims and there are students". Namely the students part. One can be a victim and let it control them or one can be a student and study it, learn from it, and control it. This and O Virgin Pure by Nektarios of Aegina are the 2 most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

This song quite literally put me into a phase in my life where I realized that mental warfare as he says is NOT a winning battle but a dance and the more rigid you are against it the harder it becomes. It softened me to dance with my demons and he is so correct that this is the key to peace the key to self confidence and being able to cope with your demons whatever they may be. Emotional is the correct response to this I have never listened to this song and had dry eyes.

The death of genres. I like that. Metal has been that way for a while. I feel it's letting the artists out of their box to soar on creativity. I'm so happy people are experimenting, and coming up with real expression. Especially when music has been so stagnant.

I happened to come across your reaction to “The System” from Tom MacDonald, went to your channel to find your reaction to “Watch The World Burn” from Falling In Reverse, then moved on to this reaction. I subscribed. I completely agree that artists that are bending genres are the groundbreakers. I’m 50 years old, I never liked rap until I discovered Tom MacDonald. I absolutely love these artists who are breaking the mold and creating music that’s meaningful. Ren is an amazing gift to our world as well. ❤️

I prefer smaller, down to earth reactors. As for Ren, the guy is genius, as is his cinematographer. If you do the Jenny, Screech, Violet trilogy - be sure to do them together and in order.

This is #Transcendent. The composition & pacing, the playing, the singing, the acting, the fact this is a live capture (take #4 I believe).... but most of all the grasp a twenty-something has on the universally relateable subject matter. I hope Ren's stem cell treatments & surgeries are going well in Canada. p.s. #FcukGenreBickering - just enjoy quality music when someone gifts it to you! ;) All the best from a random music appreciator in Scotland. p.p.s. there is zero chance you'd not be impressed by Jinjer's gorgeous thru-composed (because #WhoNeedsChoruses, that's why!) single "Vortex". On the off-chance you're not already familiar, I'd love to see you do a reaction vid for that! ;)

That's crazy you mentioned Hendrix before him. This is precognition. It's a rare phenomenon that happens to me at least once a week and my father has this almost daily which is super strange to think it could be hereditary.. I'm not quite sure what it means to have it, but it is unique, sometimes unsettling, but ultimately pretty cool....until you really think about it. Then it eats you alive wondering why it happens with no explanation. One thing I do know is this....I've never seen a bad or evil person have procognition. It may be a blessing.

Awesome reaction bro. I definitely subbed. I have also been where you've been bro. I've lost many family and friends to suicide and continues to happen. I myself have been there but thankfully I'm still here, struggling at time's, but I'm still above ground so it's a win for me everyday I wake up. Ren is everything lol. But definitely check out his band, "The Big Push" BUT their live street videos of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" blew my mind because as a metal headed myself I thought there's no way knowing Ren's style they could pull it off. I was wrong haha they killed it. And also watch their live street cover of Bob Marleys "I Shot The Sheriff" and man they destroyed that one also haha. Ren does rap too. Like rap rap. His song "The Hunger" and "Genesis" are sick! He was signed to SONY but they dropped him when he got sicker. 4 over a decade he was misdiagnosed bipolar when she really had Lyme disease. Currently he's in Canada getting treatment for the Lyme disease that's pretty much destroyed his body and today he found out that his brain is worse than they thought originally. She was supposed to only be in Canada for treatment for Lyme disease for 3 months but now it's going to be 6 months is going to be there. And he's upset because of that and he's blowing up and he can't do nothing about it. If you follow him on KZread he updates every day what he's going through. And keep pushing and doing your thing bro. I can tell you're real. You're not the typical cookie-cutter reactor. You're not jumping up and down and running around screaming "Oh my God did you hear that?" You're you vs you understand the human experience. You're not performing for the camera like soooo many other reactors do. And others who come upon your reactions will be able to tell you're real and they'll follow also. In time the 700 followers you have be 7,000 then 70,000 and so on.
