    This cut is destined to be in there with Lingus & Shofukan! ! ! Such a fun, rollicking, swinging piece! ! ! 3 (THREE!!!) guitars, 3 (THREE!!!) drummers & 3 (THREE!!!) percussionists, and the band is tight, TighT, TIGHT! ! ! While Michael League has previously been the band's primary composer, he is mostly an arranger on the upcoming album. He has one tune co-written with Mike Maher (trumpet, flugel), while Justin Stanton (keyboards, trumpet, flugel) has 3 tunes, and Mark Lettieri (guitar), Jay Jennings (trumpet, flugel), Zach Brock (violin), Bill Laurance (keyboards), Nate Werth (percussion), and Marcelo (percussion) each wrote one; the band's first cover is by Bernard Wright, who they consider to be Snarky Puppy's godfather. (Composer & compositions as per Michael League at GUMFest.)

For me the ‘happy’ bit was the insane groove, that whole rhythm section, and how deep in the pocket it was. Quick line up note - 19 musicians total on that. Three guitars: Letteiri, Bob Lanzetti and Chris McQueen. Zack Brock on violin. Horns: Chris Bullock (bass clarinet and sax), Bob Reynolds on alto sax, Jay Jennings and Mike Maher on trumpet. Three full drum kits: Larnell Lewis, Jamison Ross and JT Jason Thomas. Three percussionists: Keita Ozawa (I'm sure I spelled this incorrectly), Nate Werth and Marcelo Woloski. Keys: Bobby Sparks on the low end on the Moog, Shaun Martin, Bill Laurence and Justin Stanton. Micheal League on bass. I was fortunate to be at 4 of the sessions during this week of recordings and it was a mind blowing experience - the mix you hear here is a very good representation of what we were hearing in the room in the headphones. I'll miss some of their names but sound engineering was Nic Hard and for sure a guy named Matt Reccia - there were more for sure - and the camera crew was amazing as well. Yes - this entire album is going to be on fire. :)

    To your comments about the mix: remember that 1) they did ten or 12 sets - they booked that space in Dallas (back in early April?) and did 2 shows a night for 5 or 6 nights to record all these tunes, so what we see and hear here is the best of the 10 or 12 takes, and 2) they did record each instrument directly (this is the classic Mike League concept of "doing a live show in a recording studio"), and then went back to do the mix afterwards. I saw a very interesting you tube vid SP posted some time back showing the studio where they were doing the mix, and that included running the recorded guitar tracks back through amps ("re-amping") and miking and re-recording the guitar SOUND in the "mixing" process. That blew my mind, I had no idea that was a thing.

  • @StrateleStudios

    @StrateleStudios

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ya, they are very smart about how they record. I've recorded guitar direct into Pro Tools (which of course sounds horrible) BUT re-amping you can sound like anything you want. Here's another recording trick for you if you are recording electronic drums. You can pipe the tracks through speakers and set up room mics then blend them with the electronic tracks at mix down. You'd be surprised how authentic they sound.

    This was really amacing. The sound was really good, the musicians were really good, the light was fantastic. And this bass saxofon (or was it a bass clarinett) was really cool. And the fact that they are playing this live with all these peoples sitting around and in between, is awesome. Are they all a part of the production, or are some of them just wifes and relatives and friends, that were invited to watch them play and record? You see, I imagine that this isn't a common concert, but a live recording in studio, isn't it?

    Just a quick note about the intro part: the cool trumpet sound is also helped in part by the violin. Very subtle, it's the slightly harsher tone just behind the muted trumpet. Maybe the violin tone is distorted just a tiny bit? or just from the amp, or just the way the string is "bowed"(?) but sounds terrific. Also the mix is really blending these two tones together and we all think is just the guitar and the trumpet, but there's also the violin. And the chord progression in the second part? Man, what a fucking great band!

    The only way to listen to this (outside of being there, obviously) is with your best technical and revealing audio gear in hi-res lossless, to hear each and every instrument in the mix. All except the violinist, which I just couldn't pick out. Anyways, their audio engineers are magicians at making even KZread's crappy audio sound decent.

    I see you noticed the Kemper profiler. I know many of the guitarists use them, but i'm not quite sure, why the guy with the stage pianos and synths would need one. My best guess would be the Fender Rhodes, but i'm not 100% on that. While i have played my Arturia Matrixbrute synth through a Line 6 Helix pedal before, i wouldn't have thought, that such a setup sees regular use in a group like snarky puppy. I'm interested in your opinion on that. Otherwise a great reaction as always (and also an insanely good song) :D

  • @StrateleStudios

    @StrateleStudios

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes! I was a little surprised to see the Kemper there and had the same thought about the Rhodes. Since the Kemper emulates the sound of anything you run through it I guess I have to consider the fact that keyboard players can also like the sound of a particular amp and/or cabinet. These guys are so innovative that I wouldn’t be surprise to find out there’s a section where the Rhodes is run through a Marshall stack. 🤣
