Music Publishing Explained | Music Publishing 101
Music publisher is responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. Through an agreement called a publishing contract, a songwriter or composer "assigns" the copyright of their composition to a publishing company. In return, the company licenses compositions, helps monitor where compositions are used, collects royalties and distributes them to the composers. They also secure commissions for music and promote existing compositions to recording artists, film and television.

Thank you so much for your video! I am the father of a singer who appeared on American Idol years ago! Long story short: we wrote a song that was on a CD that she put out in 2005. Since then the owner of the record company and the publisher has passed away! I feel this song is a great song so I’m in the process of forming my own publishing company because the other publisher is no longer and the song if it was given the proper marketing- could be an incredible song! So thank you again for your video because you are educating me to get on with this project!

Very good! I will use this video when people ask me about what I do. I have all three publisher types but I believe you could include a 4th. Self publishing. As an artist I also have a publishing account for syncs that I get through certain sites such as Storyblocks/Audioblocks. They are stock audio sites so there is no middle man ie admin or agent in between. Editors choose the songs on their own and if required by the project/network will in turn release a queue sheet including my PRO info for both my writer's and publishing accounts.

The reason why I say this type of sync deal doesn't fall under your three publisher types is because no one is taking a cut from the backend. I get 200%. Typically in those other scenarios (the three you mentioned) the publisher/admin/label all control 100% of the publishing, collect from the PRO, take a cut, and pay the artist.

I have a question. So when people speak about “signing over your publishing” when people do that do they sign over the rights to just specific songs from the time frame of the deal with the publisher? Or do they sign over the right to EVER publish their own music or what ? That’s the only thing I’m confused about.

It is usually signing over the publishing of specific songs or might be for any songs made during specific period of time, it really depends on the deal.

Own your Masters as well people.
No hablo ingles tengo canciones en you tube como puedo saber si gano algo.me interpretan varios grupos.
They say every registered song have their own code? May I know where can I check them up? Did every country have it’s own naming system?
I’m owning all of my publishings.

If you get as big as Adele or Drake, owning all of your publishing isn’t worth it. You’re probably going to miss out on as much money not signing a deal as you are signing one because that means that you gotta keep track of all of your performance and mechanical publishing royalties around the world. It’s not worth it…
Can you submit an audio recording when copyrighting a music composition or does it have to be transcribed into sheet music? (Note: I'm not talking about copyrighting a sound recording, I want to copyright the underlying musical composition. I would like to own the copyright for both the music composition and the sound recording, me being the author of both, but if I were to only copyright the music composition, are you allowed to use a sound recording to do that, or does it have to be transcribed into sheet music?)
I'm still confused..
I would like more insight on Royalties :performance, mechanical, synchronization.
If I used United masters select do I still need a publisher?
Grupo. Subir canciones nuevas en este foro?
I'm in JHB, where can I get professional publishers?

First register with SAMRO, this would be your PRO then sign up with a Publisher in such as EMI or Sheer Music. Sheer Music will administrate your royalties on your behalf and protection will also be from SAMRO.
But only if the Publisher pitches my song to placement and gets it then only it will keep half the percentage right? Otherwise I am the full owner of the songs copyright right?
I still don't understand
Never mind.

Music Publishing: The Act of commercially leveraging the work of composers and writers and getting them paid for it 3 Types of Pubsliher 1. Admin: - Perform a Service for a commission - Non Creative 2. Indies: - 3. Majors: Universal, Warner, BMG, EMI etc 4. Self Publishing The Publisher gets a share of the royalties Responsible for: 1. Song Registration with a PRO 2. Issuing Licenses (Mechanical & Sync) 3. Royalty Collection (Performance, Mechanical and Sync) 4. Creative Matters Attempting to pitch the song to ad agencies and video games etc. Creating opportunities
Moral: Make music that doesn't suck and hire a smart person to deal with all this smart person stuff.
