Hi great video 💯. I'm going to copyright 10 songs. Just wondering how long I should wait before releasing my album through TuneCore? I'd like to register with ASCAP but with my budget I'd have to do that at a later time. I'm the author of the sound recording and composition & lyrics, etc Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!

I sent a message to ASCAP a couple weeks ago and I still haven't received a response. Perhaps you can provide an answer. I want to publish a work that I didn't write, but I don't know how to get a hold of the copyright owner. I know his name and where he lived over 20 years ago. I found a couple of email addresses, but they're no good. So I mentioned all this in my message to ASCAP and, since this guy was (is?) a professional musician with publishing credits, I asked if they would contact him and tell him I want to publish one of his tunes. He's got to be a member of either ASCAP or BMI and I'm figuring even if he might be a member of BMI, ASCAP should still have a way to contact him.

Great Video! Great Insight. As a longtime beatmaker and award winning the only thing I would add is I submitted 100 + beats to Sony TV for a TV Show and many were used, I did need to register those beats with BMI or ASCAP to get paid publishing that I still receive. Beatmakers don't need to publish their beats unless they will be used in this type of way as a song beat.

First, I'm helping an artist register some of his back catalog, but some are from quite a long time ago and he knows only the release year and not the month and day. Can we just give an approximate month and day? Second, in the Artists and Recording section, when the form asks for "are then any artists?", would this be any one performing on the record, or is it only other artists who might share rights?

Hello! Thank you for taking time to answer questions! I collaborated with another Artist on a song featured on his album. It is about to be released. He bought the beat from someone. I don't have the beat maker's info. I am with ASCAP, and also own my publishing. 1. When registering my work, do I give myself 50% and the other writer 50%, then under publishing, give myself 100%? 2. Do I have to list the beatmaker since I don't have his info?

Thank you for this! I still have a question after watching this video & your video about registering as a publisher - if I am a BMI writer & I have my own publishing imprint via BMI - I'm confused about setting the right % if there are multiple composers involved. If I want the writer's splits to match the publishing royalties, does this mean my publishing company still collects 100% or I also split up that 100% to match the Writer's splits? This is hard to describe! Not sure if it's making sense...

Great video. What do you recommend for a composer who wants to make music to sell on his own website, and sell usage licenses? I should register the music in BMI (or equivalent), or I should not register it, since I am interested in whether it is ROYALTY FREE. On the other hand, should I register all of them in BMI and better license them to buyers so they can then monetize through a Content ID dispute on KZread? Sorry if it sounds confusing, I just don't know how to explain it.

Quick question... if I am registering some songs on BMI with a co-writer (we are dividing our songs equally for music & lyrics), should I put 100% for myself and 100% for my co-writer? I have found some great Drum loops on Wikiloops. If I use one of the loops on Wikiloops on an original song of mine, do I need to put the creator of the drum loop as part of the copyright for whatever original song of mine that I am copyrighting. My confusion is with copyrighting a (SR), Sound Recordings as opposed to copyrighting the original song as sheet music, (notes and words on paper) I guess. Nowadays, I record at home and except for the drums I play everything and sing everything myself. Maybe a better question is, if I write the melody and words of a song, but I get help to play and record it, do others share in my copyright? Or maybe there are 2 visions of a copyright? When I send my songs to the Copyright office as Mp3 or WAV files, should I just send a vocal and guitar accompaniment version to establish that I wrote the lyrics and melody? Any kind of recording would be a "Sound Recording". Sheesh!!

I've done songwriting before but have never released material or music before. I live in the UK. What website/software would you recommend for copyrighting? Also, how much time do i need to leave between copyrighting my song and releasing my song?

QUESTION: can a beat maker take advantage of both licensing beats as well as putting the beats up on BMI to use as instrumentals while waiting for a placement for that best?

I'm registered to BMI, and I'm just starting to get into stock music licensing. Do songs submitted to stock libraries need to be registered with bmi first, or is it similar to selling beats since some sites have set rates?

If have used a vocal from SPLICE, as I paid for annual subscription to Splice, do I have register that as a Sample, or is that just considered a loop with BMI?

I have produced/released a track with a royalty free vocal. When it comes to adding work on BMI, when I get to the 'Work Content' drop down, do I add it as 'Music' or 'Music & Lyrics'? I understand that royalty free samples are not considered 'sampling' but, how should I add the work content at that point?

Since you can receive Both the writer and publishing rights from BMI, do you need to register with a publishing Admin like songtrust or tunecore ????

Regarding your comment about how to register a 15-song album, it's worth noting that the Copyright Office looks at things differently, and you should mention this. The Copyright Office has a form you will fill out for a group of works, but it is limited to only 10 works. So, if you want to register a 15-song album with the US Copyright Office; you have to fill out TWO forms and then pay TWO submission payments. It is for this reason that all of my albums now contain 10 songs or fewer. I don't have a big copyright budget to deal with this. It can quickly add up if I want to have albums with more than 10 songs. Also, you mention only how BMI does things. I'm a member of ASCAP. It would have been nice to see from you how ASCAP handles things.

It's also worth noting (for anyone reading this) that you will not sign up for both ASCAP and BMI - you have to choose one PRO and stick with them!

Hi, just a quick question...when you registered your 10 song album was this done online? I wanted to register 10 songs the composition and sound recording. I'm not sure if the system would allow me to continue if I typed in the Album title as the title plus the songs would be 11 line items and the US Copyright has a walkthrough video that shows it would generate an error for more than 10 line items. Just wondering if you were familiar with this or ran into an issue when registering. Thank you!

On number 2. Samples. I use Splice. Do I have to choose that I have used samples? As a subscriber to splice I don't have to pay royalties.Thanking you in anticipation.
