Congratulations, you just found the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their first five years of existence, they put themselves on par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. They recently went on a year-and-a half hiatus while they searched for a new bassist. They announced the new bassist in October 2022 (see below) and dropped their first new song on December 22. Their new album, “Judgement Day”, was released two months later. They did their first live performances in more than two years in summer of 2023, with their new bassist Fami. Their very first show was commemorated on the DVD “Knocking on Heaven’s Gate”. They have posted three performances from that DVD. You just watched the very first song from their first set after their hiatus. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and founder of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the great European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other groups. The four of them then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she was also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed a little more than half of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics and is also getting involved in composing. In mid-2021, Miho left the band she had founded, for personal reasons. They went on hiatus while they searched for a new bassist, and during that time, two of them had babies, even as the band were writing and rehearsing their new album. They recently announced the new bassist, Fami, who is a young phenom and herself a composer and multi-instrumentalist. Their first song with Fami is “Judgement Day” kzread.info/dash/bejne/n2epqcypXbOddKw.html The instrumentalists studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance was that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like crazy). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." Here are more clips you should check out: “Set the World on Fire” kzread.info/dash/bejne/a22u1apvmarFZsY.html from their 2021 concert DVD “Heavy Metal Never Dies”. “Don’t Bite the Dust” kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXyiral-mpSpfcY.html, from the same concert; "Edge of the World" and "We the United", back to back: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paBkj7dmqc6wc7g.html They form an incredible journey from darkness and despair to light and hope. Also, “Empty Daydream”, which starts as a ballad and becomes a real rocker: kzread.info/dash/bejne/noycwdeGfZyamrg.html; Perhaps their greatest masterpiece, a showcase of multi-instrumental virtuosity and even classical dance “A Frozen Serenade” kzread.info/dash/bejne/c5ls0rOPpZC4fps.html; And their most reacted-to video, “Holy War”: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lJt12tJ-oKjJntI.html Miyako is also a virtuoso concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. She is self-taught on the guitar. If you want to see what she can do on the piano, watch “Swan Song” WITH the prelude, which is Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude” (official name Étude Opus 10, No. 12 in C minor). Miyako wrote “Swan Song” using elements from several classical pieces including the Etude. This link should work: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iXac1tOgmburcZc.html. For a thrasher with heavy Slayer and Metallica vibes, “Break the Wall” kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4SXkrqEYM-0nbg.html includes two gorgeous and completely contrasting solos by M&M. For a heart-stopping ballad, “Epilogue” kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y62i0Lp9lqjUnrw.html (this includes a second song, your choice whether or not to react to both) While you will sometimes hear you should only react to live clips, actually their MV’s are epic and worth seeing. Here are four of the most spectacular: "Shadowmaker" kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKah0c6nZarepdY.html This is the song that blew up and melted faces all over the world "When Destinies Align" kzread.info/dash/bejne/moB6x86CaZa8m7A.html "Glory to the World" kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6t-1qZriKi-eJc.html "Winds of Transylvania" kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqd5lrebj7PQmJs.html. Finally, the audio tracks of some of the new album are up on youtube, and worth checking out. The band clearly came out swinging and wanted to make a statement. Every song on the album is a showcase of their incredible talent and songwriting capabilities. “Stand and Deliver” is a thrasher with a fun video of them in the studio. “Soldier Stands Solitarily”, the final song on the album, is being touted by some as the best thing they’ve done so far-I encourage you to see and decide for yourself! You'll get lots of suggestions, just one thing: don't bother with Bloodstock footage, the sound quality is poor. Best to take suggestions with actual links. Also, you can’t go wrong with any of their official clips. Welcome to the Wolf-Pack!

if you are new to LOVEBITES then your life has just changed - for the better. much better. most talented amazing band of beauties to ever exist. they put 99 % of any male metal bands to shame. did i say metal ? let me rephrase that. power , thrash and heavy metal along with hard rock and some prog rock and a few power ballads thrown in for good measure. they will stun you every time with their 60 odd self written songs in the last 6 1/2 years. the ride has just begun.

You have barely touched the tip of the iceberg since these ladies have a discography of around 60 songs and they don't have a bad track. Their music is best described as a seamless and innovative blend of speed-power/thrash/prog/neoclassical metal/heavy rock/power ballads which makes their sound very unique. You have just witnessed a thrashier song of theirs. Formed in 2016 by *Miho* (old bassist) and *Haruna* (drums 4'9") with the aim of resurrecting the 'old school' Metal sound - upgraded to new techniques (Nailed It!). Guitarists are *Midori* (blond) and *Miyako* . New bassist *Fami* was 20 yo at this concert last March - this was her first Live performance with the band, and first ever performance in front of a big crowd (explains the constant Smiles). Vocals/lyrics by *Asami* . They are doing a Livestream from their sold-out Tour on the 24th (tickets at their website). Coming to the US in 2024! I have a thing about pigeon holing, i am not a big fan of it! This is plain metal, not J, k or whatever metal. Back in the 80s, it was not A-metal or B-metal. Everyone and your aunt knew which country certain bands came from, and there was no need to stick a letter in front of metal, pop, or whatever. Just say this form of metal coming out of Japan is equivilant to what has come before with more attitude! Now that wasn't hard, was it 🤔! Drop the frackin J , it is an Americanism, they like to pigeon hole everything, no other country does it. Have a good day 😉 😎🤟

@@noelle3551 You're getting quite emotional over the letter "J". Should K-Pop also drop the "K" as well? Should we drop the "B" from NWOBHM, or is that term acceptable because it was in use in the 1980s? Terms such as "J-Rock, K-Pop, NWOBHM etc are not just in use in America. As an Australian, I can assure you those terms are used here, and I suspect they are used (almost) globally, at least in the English speaking world.

@@noelle3551totally agree. I’m 63, I grew up on “heavy rock”. Deep Purple - “heavy rock” Iron Maiden “Heavy Rock”, Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, AC/DC “Heavy Rock”. I grew disillusioned with modern rock music and thankfully completely bypassed the era where a “metal” (heavy rock) band had to have a Neanderthal or ape as a lead singer. Nowadays Asami-san gets the occasional criticism for not growling. Good. Never gonna happen. Having missed all that I also discovered that before the first few bars are over, the genre, or sub genre…even the sub, sub genre must be decided upon. And as time passes, the band, and each song in their catalogue has to be numbered, in order of preference. Fortunately for me I support this band, and they are without peers and have never delivered a song that is even marginally “below par”. Until recently I refused to name a favourite, because I discovered that each song is almost totally unique that it wasn’t a reasonable choice. Then I heard SSS. It’s my favourite. Just. And what is it? “Heavy rock”.

@noelle3551 I did not 'pigeon hole' the kind of music that Lovebites plays. I believe they are straight up 'Heavy Metal' considering the wide range of styles they play. I was remarking that they are part of a 'J-Metal/Rock scene' because there in fact *is* just such a 'scene' in Japan - one that is *_thankfully_* finally reaching the ears of Western listeners. I'm sorry if you found my choice of words offensive, but please don't accuse me of doing something I would never do to Lovebites. Band Maid, Nemophila (saw them in March), Hanabie (saw them last night), Trident, Unlucky Morpheus . . . are all totally different from Lovebites - and each other. But, IMHO they are ALL part of the J-Metal/Rock music scene.

Five beautiful, highly-skilled Japanese women playing heavy metal . . . but enough about Nemophila, East of Eden, BAND-MAID, and Aldious. As you've just seen, LOVEBITES is a fantastic band that tends to stay in the lanes of traditional power metal and thrash metal, though there are a number of outliers that don't fit either genre label. Great live band, easily one of my favorites of the Japanese rock and metal scene and a band I tried to join, but the fans tend to be a bit hyperbolic and myopic.

I would include in the list Gacharic Spin - they have their now sound - and Waggaki Band for the blend of Japanese and West. My trio is Band Maid, Gacharic spin and Lovebites for a start. (they do not compete to each other they have all their pathway).

This band is without equal. In Japan, in the world, in popular music history. Nobody has ever bought the combination of attributes to the table that LOVEBITES has. They are elite musicians. They compose impeccable songs. They improve year on year. But they are much, much more than just a ridiculously talented group of musicians. Look at when Fami-san stands on the riser playing bass, grinning with uncontrollable joy during her first full “solo” in the first song of the first show before a live audience *IN HER LIFE* Asami-san, lead singer, in the midst of a vocal line catches her eye. Despite having to continue her line she too beams from ear to ear and gives her a thumbs up. This isn’t a band, it’s a family. And the fanbase is actively welcomed into the family, with a very high and totally sincere level of commitment from the band. They’re the best thing the music industry has ever produced. And the best thing about this particular show… I’m front and centre in the audience.

Repeating it again and again won't make it true. Fami's first show before a live audience was not with Lovebites, but rather with a J-Pop vocalist. For that matter, inasmuch as she was in the popular music club in her high school, she likely played before live crowds then, as is common for such club members to do (if not Covid-restricted). At the Nagoya concert few days ago I met a guy who saw one of Fami's shows with the J-Popper, it was at the club morph-tokyo, and there was a live, paying audience-and there were more shows like that. In the Feb. interview oft-quoted by certain LB fans in which she appears to be saying that her upcoming 1st LB show would be her 1st live experience, she's talking about getting vocal feedback from the crowd-which was not the case in her live gigs with the J-Pop guy, which were during the time of full Covid restrictions, in which applause was the limit of expression. Be assured I won't bug you about this again. If you wish to continue repeating a false statement, that's your choice of course.

Welcome to the best metal band in the world! They're amazing. Truly. The talent on that stage is unparalleled. I recommend checking out some more form them. Anything live will surprise you just as much as that song did. I am sure you noticed the grand piano on stage? Miyako is a classically trained pianist and is better at that than she is at guitar (if you can believe it) and some of their songs use that as well. They're unreal.

Welcome to the Wolfpack! (the name for the Lovebites fans :D) - Glad to see you fully enjoying the best metal band on the planet. It's great to see more people discovering our ladies! I encourage you to check out some of their live performances too - in my decades of metal fandom, I've never heard cleaner sound out of a band live. Also, they while they usually wear the white gowns that are their usual "Battle Uniforms", one of their newest songs "Stand and Deliver" is one of the few MVs they have done in casual clothes. This is from (I believe) their second show since a hiatus that saw the original bassist (Miho) leave the band. Some data on the band: The lead singer (Asami) is the group goofball, and is known as "The One and Only Voice" - and metal is a new genre for her vocally. She does a lot of writing, also. Haruna is the drummer - called "The Little BIG Engine" - because she just crushes the drum parts and rhythm section on every song, and she is completely indefatiguable! Miyako is our dark haired guitarist who also does all the background synth and piano work. In addition, she also writes and does everything with that calm, cool professionalism. :) She is called "The Golden Touch" for a reason - everything she touches turns gold. Midori is the blonde guitarist with the amazing hair, and she is called "The Crazy Shredder" - because, well, it is what it says. She's insanely good and aggressive shredder. She also performs in bodybuilding competitions, so, no, she does not skip leg day. :) On bass you have the amazingly talented Fami - who doesn't have a nickname yet - but she really has injected even more energy and passion into the group. She is the youngest of the group, and has amassed an amazing KZread following as a solo artist before auditioning for Lovebites and being accepted wholeheartedly by the band and the fans. Fun fact: Fami is the tallest member of the band, at 5'2" tall. :) Recommended further listening: Music Videos: Stand and Deliver (Shoot 'em Down) - latest video, and definitely more thrash. Judgement Day - debut off the latest album Live Videos: Swan Song (with Chopin Intro) - shows a lot of range - including classical influences, which includes Miyako playing a Chopin piece on piano. Spellbound - for that 80's euro-metal vibe. Frozen Serenade - more amazing range, and a killer live video We the United (off of Five of a Kind) - for just a great all around show-ender.

Well talk, about domination, now you also need to check out Band-Maid and their live song Domination. The MV is good but the live is fantastic. Band-Maid, Lovebites, and Trident are my top three female bands. You’ll get a lot asking for Band-Maid as well. They are more of hard rock band that skirts the edges of metal, punk, and more. No two songs sound exactly alike. Other than Domination, they have a new song out called Shambles, and before that an instrumental called From Now On. As far as Lovebites goes, you can pretty much do anything from them and find something great to react to!
