Another note I'd love to add to this is the trumpet player at the end simply playing the melody of the song back to everybody including Vai. Signifies to me that melody is truly the thing that drove all of these musicians rather than just shredding (even though everybody here can clearly shred) and I just think that a beautiful way to cap off this video

Also, Tim and Scott both take a turn in the throne, showing their skills, then the real king takes the throne to put them in their place, and then he humbles himself and plays back to back with them. ...or I'm just making stuff up.

My favorite thing about the cinematography of ego death is the use of color and positioning to represent ego. The title of the song, Ego Death, already keys you in to the story that this song is telling. They start off with everyone wearing mostly black clothes with white shoes, in an almost entirely white room and the pitch black throne. Tim lounges on the throne like he owns it and shreds a classic Tim solo that is reminiscent of the early solos he used to play, with the polish of experience. The shot of the whole band in this scene has Tim front and center. Then they shift to a grimier second story of the building, with more harsh natural light and with more white on everyone's clothes. This time, Scotty gets to sit on the throne and show off his unique style, and when it cuts back to the band he's the one in the lead, the focus of the camera. Abruptly, it jumps to the roof, with less harsh lighting and everyone wearing almost completely dark colors, except for Tim's white shoes still denoting him as the "leader." But now instead of trying to take turns sitting on the throne, they all face it as Steve is revealed, the only person with a mix of black and white clothes. When they play as a group, he is placed in front of the rest of the band, with Tim, Scotty, and Clay all in an even line. Then it cuts to the three guitarists playing back to back and then Tim and Scott peel off to stand on the same line as Vai. The whole song is a story of their journey in the music scene, trying to come into their own while still remaining humble and showing deference to their influences and those who came before, while simultaneously acknowledging their own place in the future of guitar music.

Polyphia has been my favorite band for many years now, but Steve Vai was the one who introduced me to instrumental guitar music and made me fall in love with it 18 years ago, so this really feels like a real full circle moment where Steve is passing on the torch to the new generation. Despite the age, he looks like he is part of the band. Maybe they should just become a 3 guitar band like Periphery...lol...By the way, if you haven't checked out Periphery, they are definitely a must listen...Lots of interesting rhythmic stuff going on.

Dude! Same! Passion and Warfare blew my actual mind when I first heard that album. Vai is such a unique and innovative artist, and he rarely gets the praise the he deserves, as he’s often brushed aside as being a shredder. But he’s really not. It feels increasingly like Polyphia have taken what Vai started, in terms of highly experimental virtuosic instrumentals, and pushed it into new worlds. Love this collab.

I love that Steve's part doesn't scream complexity like Tim's does but it delivers a feel few can match. I'm not trying to say Steve can't play, but you don't have to be the most technical players to one of the best to ever do it. I'm sure there's a thousand guitarists that can out-technical Steve, but I doubt they could ever make me feel like he makes me feel. This song is such a masterpiece in how it blends those elements.

Great video and content! I just recently subscribed for a couple reasons I stated previously. You popped in my recommended reacting to Polyphia which is my favorite band. Your knowledge of music and being able to describe and explain different aspects is just fantastic. It actually has me appreciating them even more. As you said, there is so much going on it’s hard to take it all in. I mean there is a lot to unpack. Then there is the music theory, composition and structure of each song. The icing on the cake quite honestly is your genuine enthusiasm and appreciation for what you are listening to. Those eye rolls with the smile then the look at the camera at us and laughing gets me every time. Because in those moments I am geeking out as well in those moments. Like you said you can talk about the technical stuff but I like the word you use sometimes. TASTY, it really does capture it in a fun way. Those moments when they just do something cool. A lick, run, triplets or just even allow space between sections. Anyways, great job! That’s what I am trying to say. What you say or even just physically react in some way really adds to your content delivery! Thanks again for doing your thing and reacting to this ridiculous song! Can’t wait for their next song that will be dropped on October 18th and seeing your reaction video to it!

If you would like to check out a good drummer in the rock metal genre, I suggest checking out the sleep token-hypnosis drum playthrough by II, very unique style of drumming, but the man has rhythm chops!

i mainly listen to metal, and never really know what I can get away with suggesting ("where is the line if I want *everyone* to enjoy it, and not narrow the viewership as a result?"). taking advantage of my manic episode, I'm just gonna send it and not think too hard this time :D *Architects - For Those Who Wish To Exist (At Abbey Road)* it's a live playthrough of the album with an orchestral accompaniment. of course, i'd recommend the entire thing in your spare time (along with the band Silent Planet), but here's a few songs off that i think you'd enjoy. 4) Discourse is Dead 5) Dead Butterflies 6) An Oridinary Extinction 7) Impermanance 10) Animals *continues to list the whole album hahaha*

Share it man, I usually listen to some of the suggestions people make and discover amazing stuff. I gave Discourse is Dead a listen and hell yeah dude 🤘. Silent Planet seems that they know what they're doing as well, I checked out Panic Room and got chills 😬. I'll be exploring their albums a bit more for the next couple of weeks

I enjoy your analysis of the songs, love it! hope its ok to request here: Jhariah: “jhariah dies and goes to hell" in particular and his "a beginner's guide to faking your death" album; some of the most popular glass beach songs, some of the most popular Streetlight Manifesto songs.

hey! ik you mentioned taking requests and stuff mostly in your discord but i hope you’ll see this one here-if there isn’t gonna be any issues you should definitely give a listen to Vendetta Preps and/or Vendetta Greasers from the game Bully. they’re fairly short theme songs for a couple cliques in the game if you get into trouble with them (which is why i gave two recommendations) and i would love to hear your thoughts on them!

Cool how they played 7 string Ibananez's and a 5 string bass, adding those low B strings, but Steve, the first guitarist I know of to play the 7 string, only played 6. Maybe I'm just looking too deep into this... obviously his solo didn't need it.

Many people say "this is guitar porn, plain and simple". Bruh. This is SO MUCH MORE than "guitar porn", the 2 Clays are so fucking on point it's almost insane, i love the rhythm play and transitions, the amalgamation of different styles and progressions is delightful... And THAT fucking ending, oh my God, i never imagined Steve Vai would mix so well with Polyphia... It was like a walk in a museum corridor: you can perceive the beauty with a general look, but if you look closely you can see every tiny detail is masterfully executed. I LOVED it. BTW thanks Tony, i love your analysis, how you explain in a fairly understandable way the details less trained ears could completely miss. Will you perhaps have time one day to react to the first Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield? I personally think it's one of the highest achievements of modern music.
