Multitask with Me: APPLE PIE+ My Thoughts on Hosting

#mennoniteyoutuber #mulittaskwithme #applepierecipe
Mutitask with me as I chat about what's hard about being a good hostess while making some of the best apple pie you've ever had!
My Apple Pie Recipe:
Crust: makes 2 pie crusts
3 c. all-purpose flour
1 1/4 c. shortening
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
5 T. water
1 T. vinegar
Mix everything together. Divide into two balls, place between wax paper sheets and roll out. Place in pie dishes, crimp edges, prick bottom with fork.
Pie Filling:
10 large granny smith apples, peeled and sliced
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
4 T. flour
4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
Sprinkle dry ingredients over apple slices and toss to coat. Divide between two pie crusts
Crumb Topping:
1 c. butter, softened
1 c. packed brown sugar
2 c. flour
Mix and crumble on top of pies.
Bake in the oven at 375° for 45 minutes. Eat warm or cool. Either way it'll be gone before you know it. You can totally half this recipe and make one pie. Except for the egg. It might be hard to half the egg, but I've done it!

I read once or maybe I heard it. About this lady who was attending a new church. She had moved because of her new job. At church, this lovely lady greeted her and made her feel welcome to the church and after the service, she invited her for Sunday Dinner at her house. When they were at the hostess home, she was invited to join her at the kitchen table while she got dinner ready. The children were changing their clothes and her husband was watching the news on the TV. While sitting at the table she watched as her host opened 3 cans of tomato soup, added the milk, set it on the stove. Then together they spread cheese of crackers, washed some grapes and precut slices of cake for everyone that was eating that day. The meal was super simple and super unstress for everyone. They all sat down together ( the children came downstairs and helped set the table and move the ready food to the table. Husband came on over and asked everyone "what would you like to drink?" and he set the glasses with either cold water, milk, or juice at the places. The conversation was asking their new friend about her previous location, her family, her new job, and they asked the children about what they had learned in Sunday School and it was relaxing and not stressful at all. They played a board game with the family and the hostess also extended an invitation to church and dinner the following week. The lady that was invited felt loved, and valued. She called this lady "MY PERFECT HOST". I LOVED THAT STORY SO MUCH I TRY TO BE LIKE HER. You are doing a great job with your family, and with your videoing. Congratulations!

I would say the best advice I was ever given in life was by the sweetest older woman. She would tell me it’s none of my business what other people think about me in their heads. It’s their head and they are entitled to that. It’s always been hard for me because I’m one of those people who are hyper aware as well and I want everyone to like and love me so it makes me unfortunately a people pleaser. The older I get though the less of this I happen to be. I enjoy good company but I also won’t stress myself out to make sure there’s nothing wrong that someone can’t judge me by. They will do so even if I think everything is perfect. They don’t have to and I don’t have to be upset or hurt by that either.

A wise elder told me two pieces of wisdom that changed me forever. 1.) the shy are people who focus on themselves and internal fears/thoughts too much instead of concentrating on hospitality, 2.) people pleasers are focused on man instead of God. As a young teenager this was a direct hit for me. I still work on it - it’s hard. You remember the comment about ‘the look’? My sister said I have that look. Introspect shows me that when I was actually thinking’ she makes that look so easy, I can’t do that.’ Try not to take it as a negative but think, Cool, I got her thinking!’

Meychaca Clan that is such good advice! I’m the same way. Especially when we are hosting a gathering in our home. And my husband is always like “don’t worry no one is going to care!” But I’m always like, “yeah but I care. And I’ll be judged according to how our home looks.. how good the food is.” I mean I know deep down that my friends don’t judge me that way but I feel like people would. We’re our own worst critic.

This is fantastic advice! Thank you for sharing! For me, I know I don't like all people so I accept that not all people like me. =) My house is pretty neat and tidy and I like things a certain way but my friends would always say things like, "It's not clean like your house is" or "I know it's not how you have your house." Whoa! I don't go to your house to inspect it. I go to your house to hang out with you. I don't care what is on your counter or on your floor or in the corners of your ceilings because I'm not there to judge your housekeeping skills. And if you're thinking I'm judging you because of how your house looks or of the food you're serving then I need to apologize for giving my friend that impression. I would never want my friend to be stressed to have me over. =/

Came here for the apple pie 🥧🥰😋 I’ve been wanting some for over a month but I’m the only one who will eat it.. can’t eat a whole pie! 😭 oh well! 🤷🏼‍♀️ hosting terrifies me. I never have people over. I enjoy being by myself with my baby. I feel very uncomfortable around people.. my husband is introverted too. We don’t have friends or family that we spend time with. The rare times I have been to someone’s house it’s definitely their attitude that makes me feel welcome. You can tell if people are being fake or genuine.. good food also helps! ☺️

There are already 356 comments, so I'm certain someone has already mentioned the "pie pricking," but I didn't notice any in the 50+ comments I read. :-) The only time you need to prick the crust is when you're baking the shell without any filling--it's to prevent the crust from developing big air bubbles while it's baking. You would use a pre-baked shell for cream pies, for instance, where the filling is cooked on top of the stove and not baked in the oven. I'm a 63 year old widow who LOVES hostessing. In my 41+ years of marriage to my minister husband we have had literally hundreds of different guests in our home not just for meals, but for overnight stays. In our early years of marriage my husband would shake his head at me as I was zipping around preparing for everything to be PERFECT and just say, "Martha, Martha, thou are troubled about many things." It would help me re-focus and realize it's not about the condition of the house, or even how good the food is--it's about how you make your guests FEEL. THAT'S what they'll remember. Now that I'm living alone, with no family nearby, I often have people over so I can cook and have leftovers. It's MISERABLE to try to cook for just one! :-) And I still have overnight guests frequently. Like you, I'm mostly an extrovert, and love sharing with people.

I love the idea of keeping the meals simple. I like the trade off of serving a simple meal but being able to be present with your company vs having an elaborate meal and not having any time to visit. I will remember that!

I love how you illustrated that there are always two ways to say something, as in the case of your judgemental friend vs. honest friend. I am very hyper aware of others' feelings, so I think before I speak! Megan, you are so wise for someone so young. Your idea to invite mutual friends (so they can entertain each other is you get busy) is spot on. And all the planning ahead is key, too; so you can spend more time with your guests. As far as making others feel welcome in your home, my favorite thing to do is give them a big hug as they walk through the door

Love your video! Great timing for sharing your recipe, too! I just made a batch of applesauce yesterday but still have some apples left to use up, and someone hinted about wanting me to make an apple pie. Pie crust is something that I haven't mastered yet, so I will give your recipe and tips a try! Thank you, by the way! Also, I love how you talked about hospitality. I can relate to what you're talking about, as far as when we feel comfortable or uncomfortable in other people's homes, or in their presence in other places. Superior attitudes are annoying, so it's a lot nicer when people can get together, enjoy each others company, learn from each others differences, and build on what we have in common. Your videos brighten my day!

Hospitality....such a good topic. I feel like this area of my life is such a work in progress. My husband and I are both more introverted, so by the time the weekend comes around, hosting does generally not happen. But a few things I've learned in my twelve years of marriage - - Practise make a perfect. The more I do it, the more comfortable I am. - As you said, put thought into your guest list! Inviting all non-talkers can make for an awkward event. We need both talkers and listeners. 😊 - NO apologizing!! I hate when I go somewhere and the host is constantly apologizing. People don't care that much about your dirty windows. (Although having a clean house is totally fine. 😃) - Simple and prep ahead. But be ok if things don't go as planned. Ha, I think you covered all these things, but they are what stick out to me. And I was driving while watching. 🙈 I'm such a multi-tasker as well, So if it's a chatty video, perfect time for me.

Yes! Been there on the sleep schedule and potty training age conversations and all that. Had to learn the hard way that that can sometimes feel unwelcoming to people based on how sensitive they are about it. I always thought it was great fun talking about it -even debating it, but had to learn that to some people it sounds like a competition. I love it when I go to someone's house and leave feeling better about myself and life in general, and that is the kind of hosting I aspire to. As a kind of awkward, introverted person it isn't easy for me at all! Found praying a lot first helps - like how best to make each person you're having over feel glad they came and good about themselves :) Loved hearing your thoughts on it! Really great topic as we go into the holidays. Thanks!

You'd love the book Just Open The Door by Jen Schmidt! Its about Biblical hospitality, so good! I'm passionate about hospitality, partly because I'm from the southern part of the US, but also because in a lot of US cultures, its a lost art. I think the most impactful thing that makes a home inviting is what you can't see - just treating your guests like family and allowing them to feel connected and heard and part of your own family. I've learned to put hospitality in practice more now than ever. We are a military family, so we are surrounded by others who are away from family. For awhile, we had single soldiers in our home almost every weekend - they called us "dad" and "mom", and we were their home away from home. So hospitality goes beyond our comfort zone and reaches for those who need that connection

Funny thing is - there is a tool for that! Or there used to be. I've been to several old houses opened for tours and in the 1800's it was a common thing to have a pie crimper - a little wheel that would put a design in your crust edge and help seal the edges if you had a top crust. There would be all kinds of designs, and sometimes sailors would carve them out of whale bone while out to sea to take home to their wives so they could have their own unique design.

One thing I try not to do when hosting, is apologize for my house, the food, etc. Our house is older and needs some upgrades, but I think cleaning and having a welcoming atmosphere when hosting helps to distract from the lack of nice floors or walls!

Megan, I think you are doing so great as a hostess! I get so many great tips from you. I agree people like a host who wants to be there. When I'm getting ready for a party, I ask myself if what I'm doing is going to make me happy of stressed. I'll share one more tip with you... The potluck! I underutilized potlucks in the past. People like seeing eachother more often and having something to bring over. I'll suggest ideas for food people can bring. Sometimes I'll have a theme like a Mexican food potluck or Thanksgiving potluck. It's a lot of fun and takes some pressure off of me. I used to be worried I wouldn't have enough food, but I'm getting better at judging what we'll need.

My parents were never the ones to have guests over growing up, but I have always appreciated my mentors and friends homes that have an open door policy. As I grow I hope to have a home as those that I went to growing up. I’m still living with my dad, so I’m not there yet, but the option to have that as my home in the future is so important to me. Thank you for sharing your views on the topic!!

One of my favorite times hosting was a book swap party. Everyone brought one book, wrapped in anything, and either wine or a side dish. We all ate, and then everyone would pick a mystery book off the mantle and unwrap it. Once you unwrapped, the person who brought it told the room why they loved the book enough to bring it. Such a sweet sweet time with friends.

I really enjoyed this! I love this topic of hospitality. My mom never hosted and I’ve had 2 mentors in my life who were like mother figures who taught me but I currently have no one in my life to feed this side of adulthood. I feel lost on how to begin with young kids. If you have any advice on how to host when your husband is an introvert, I’d love to hear. I like how you made this an apple pie crumble. Best of both for everyone. I dislike apple pie, but love apple crisp/crumble. I love love love this style of cooking video because it feels like we are hanging out with you opposed to the typical “professional” cooking video.

I've tried over a dozen pie crust recipes through the years. My favorite for taste is when you cut in the cold butter, but with 6 kids and one on the way I never feel like dealing with all that. So, I have all these jars of apple pie filling that I canned, and they just sit there. Until now! Thank you, Megan, for the recipe. Loved the ease of the crust, and the topping was amazing! My husband and children are thrilled, as am I!!!!

I love having a schedule/routine for every day life, but it's also fun to be spontaneous and have days without an agenda. I think the key to being hospitable is being friendly, kind and warm towards others. Making others feel included and comfortable in whatever type of setting. Great topic to reflect on!

We didn't get to see the baked pie! I'm so sad! Lol. I love your videos. It's so nice to see things from another perspective and despite the fact that our faith streams are very different, you seem like a really lovely person that I'd have a great time talking to. I agree, spending time with your guests is the important part. I HATE having a party and not being able to sit and talk to the people that are visiting because I'm so busy catering. We don't do it often, but I might have to start doing it a bit more regularly with more 'make ahead' foods :)

Oh I am ALL about the scheduling. Bring on the day planner!! But right now I've hit my quota of walking( still healing from a broken leg) so I'm watching you hard at work while I do nothing. I really like this topic though. I haven't had the opportunity to BE hospitable in years due to an illness. I am thankful to God that things are improving. One entertaining/hostess trick; if you have someone over who isn’t familiar with the crowd and might feel awkward, give them a job. You could ask them to serve drinks, or chop some veggies. Anything that makes them feel useful, and might give them a purpose to initiate conversation with others.

I totally agree. The last 3 events I went to, I made apple pie. (Totally different groups of people) Everyone loves apple pie and ice cream this time of year. Easy to do because my husband helps me peel the apples. Making crusts are so easy. My Grandma and Mom taught me how. So I always feel close to them when I make pie.

There are some diabetics in the group so I made it without crust, I made the filling just like you did but I substituted Splenda for the sugar and Splenda brown sugar blend for the brown sugar, Everyone loved it. Your spices and flavor are just perfect. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

I've been cooking for seventy-eight years. Love it! I learned early to use the oven, to make as much as possible ahead a day or two before. The Crockpot is a wonderful invention too. You certainly have the correct idea about hospitality. The word comes from the Greek word for hospital. The idea is to comfort, console, and otherwise make feel better. Don't you just love that? I just finished mopping the floors and am resting. I love schedules.
