Mukwonago High School 1986 Video Yearbook

Time travel alert!!! It looks like the cast of Karate Kid or Fast Times at Ridgemont High on the loose, but this is the small town of Mukwonago, Wisconsin circa 1985 and 1986. Lisa Gemignani (spotting her in the video confirmed I still have a huge crush on her) and I must have spent a lot of time in the editing room in the Spring of '86 to put this together. Complete with music-video style montages that pushed the limits of our VHS-to-VHS editing suite, this was all accomplished under the tutelage of video instructor and mentor Ted Mainella with video contributions by many students. This video guaranteed to take you back to an era of iffy school lunches, crowded halls, feathered hair, cinderblock and lockers, cheerleaders and 80s clothing -- whether you want it or not!

vids like this tend to make high school look quite enjoyable. i hated it i went to 3 different high schools and never even graduated. be that as it may as it happens i also would've graduated in '86 and since there is zero footage of me from this entire decade (only still pics) i must say watching vids like this is quite amusing and enjoyable. plus i never get over all the mullets and how comparatively thin everybody was back then! and i get to take a certain amount of after the fact pride that i never had a mullet and dressed then pretty much the same as i do now.

Good save on the video Mike. It is apparent that old VCR recording was degrading at the time you ported it to digital format. I remember recording some of the footage used in this compilation with you. I also recall Mr. Mainella telling us to take the camera with us to capture images all over school. Problem was that the camera was HUGE in comparison to what technology we have today. It was a right pain to haul about the school all day. Thank you for this. It was great to see these memories again. Hope you and your family are well.

As of 2021, I am a senior at this school, and the ONLY places in the school that are recognizable are the old commons and band room (As of 2018, the commons has been expanded into the old auditorium and the old band room has been turned into a lecture hall), the North gym, and the old auditorium (We now have a much larger and more beautiful auditorium). Even if I was nowhere close to born when this was made, I'll still have some nostalgia for some of those older rooms. Edit: I forgot that the auditorium I was talking about was built in the late '90s. Whoops.

I spent 2 years or so of study halls with Ted Mainella and Mike Schaefer in the A/V Department. I first watched this video in 1994 or 1995 in their offices/studio and it inspired me to make one for the 1995-1996 school year. Fun to see this again. 1996: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pmqB27lxeLLSiKQ.html Still tape-to-tape VHS editing in 1996, but at least the cameras were one piece :-)

To who made the video, you do realize what the story is behind the song, Goodbye, by Night Ranger, don’t you? It’s really about the lead singer of the band’s brother who had died from a drug overdose. But hey, if Lisa Binon was anywhere in this montage, then that would be perfect considering that she was killed in the school parking lot in the fall of 1987. Godspeed Lisa Binon and other Mukwonago alumni who left us too soon.

About being naive, that’s true. But I can see how people would misunderstand what the song, Goodbye is really about. Btw, I would have been just a baby or a little kid in the 80’s.

Brian Jones well I don’t know all the details. I just heard that she wanted to ride with a fellow classmate to her own vehicle from her classmate’s vehicle. But she was riding outside on top of the vehicle and fell off the truck or car or whatever they were driving. And her classmate accidentally ran her over and they had to take the vehicle apart just to get her out from under there, but by the time they got her out, she was already gone.

If anyone could please settle a dispute between Kim Brushaber (found at 3:16 in this video) and me your help would be appreciated. The dispute is thatat 4:17-4:18 in the video there is a guy in a blue long sleeved shirt. Is it Dave Kush or Jamie Wendt? Your comments would be appreciated. Thanks!
