I’ve watched this fight over and over, it’s a lot closer than I first remember. It’s definitely not the clear Norton victory that some people make it to be.

Ive seen that fight a few times. Just watched again and I'd say Ali 8-6-1. Ali close early rounds Norton did nothing Ali had just more jabs that landed. Norton won last round and I think that's why they say he won it but no doubt ali beat him early on with jabs and Norton's swings didn't connect solidly.if you're going to go power you've got to connect solidly. It was close I could see a split decision but unanimous?

I was in attendance at Yankees Stadium for this fight. Quite the experience.

He wasn't interesting after the his Third Fight with Joe Frazier. Then it was becoming obvious that we have some brain damage being revealed here. And his handlers knew it and just wanted money. Look at those last fights against Holmes and Berbick. He looks brain injured from the start in each fight. But those fights went on regardless. Ali's handlers were scum by this point of the Ali - Holmes fight. The 2 Spinks fights were a disaster for his health.

You gotta give it to Ali, he's probably one of the most entertaining boxers ever in the game, he always wanted audience participation and banter with his opponents, psyching them out any chance he could. I think any Ali fight would not be a waste of money,if the fight is boring😴 who wants to watch?. He was always a showman. Miss you Muhammad.

The judges and commentator were favoring Norton throughout. A great fight by 2 champions. There's nothing or nobody fighting today who could compete with the class of heavies from that era. I'm honored to have seen it - to have lived thru it.

@@kpflo123 It was so long ago, but I think my 1976 upper deck ticket was about $25 , or $100 today. The stadium venue had a perfectly comfortable night for the fight. I'm still pissed off about the decision.

What were these 3 judges watching? Norton clearly won this fight! Can you say "The fix is in?"

Wasn't this something, you can say what you like about either man but you can't take nothing from, just absolute legends, solids, intelligent, powerful, the courage during that era, 15 rounds it makes you respect them even more 40 years later.

pay attention to what the commentator said at the 15th and last round..? (""he said i think this could be the winning round.. who ever wins this round could win the Fight"").

One of my best memories: I was blessed to have been at this fight as working press. Outside of work, I confess I was a fan of both fighters. The weigh-in (if memory serves) was at the Park Plaza. The thing I remember most that morning is Ali jabbering all through the weigh-in, and then Norton quietly dis-robing before getting on the scale; the crowd went near silent: all you could hear was an audible gasp from the hundreds of media, fans, and hangers-ons. A freakin' quiet Adonis he was. Ali, of course, was no slouch, but Norton was beyond physically intimidating. For the record, I had Norton winning on points, but it was an incredibly close fight, and a great fight to boot. Other strong memory: the NY police were on strike, and I remember watching people literally climbing over the walls of the stadium like so many ants to gain entrance. Even hours after the fight, negotiating my way out of the Bronx was nightmarish. Although I gotta admit now , a good nightmare . . .

I watched this fight as a little child, as Ali fights was a family thing. I was allowed to stay up. Watching it again here brought back memories. Miss my mother. She would talk about Ali like he was her personal friend. Dad was more reserved. Both loved Ali and he is and always will be the greatest.

I have been a Muhammed Ali fan so long that He was my hero when his name was Cassius Clay. After Ali defeated Sonny Liston I remember seeing him fight Cleveland "Big Cat" Williams and knocking him out and Zola Folley before he was stripped of his Heavyweight Title in 1967. My greatest memory of Ali was when he stated his reason for being a Conscientious Objector to the war in Vietnam. I loved him all of my life and he was my greatest sports hero. But most importantly he was a real man who had Character, Honesty and Integrity. He stood up for what he believed in and he loved and supported his family and his wives both past and present. I thank Lord God Almighty for giving me and my people, regardless of color, race or religion, Muhammad Ali.

I'm from Germany, but always had a major respect for Muhammed. When I emigrated to the US in 1987 I met the man who in his youth was a heavy weight contender in boxing, my father-in-law Dennis Helps. He said that the most respected heavy weight boxer that ever existed is Muhammed Ali because he not only was man enough to fight the toughest heavy-weights in the world and beat them, but he also stood up to the evil government and refused to fight in an unlawful war in Vietnam! As a German immigrant I can appreciate that!

The " Thrilla in Manila " was death , for both Ali and Frazier as both of them ended up in the hospital immediately after that WAR .... an amazing brutal fight ! Here , Ken Norton gave Ali huge trouble with his awkward style , more so than any other fighter Ali faced. Unlike Foreman , Ali couldn't hurt him enough with one or two hard punches to set up the finish. Ali did not do here what he did in every previous " go the distance " fight and that was that he had the ability to turn up the heat in the latter rounds that could not be matched by his opponent. I would not be surprised if this was at or near the beginning of the onset even though as Tbiz pointed out in the comments that it wasn't until after the Ernie Shavers fight in "77 that Ali's Parkinson's was becoming more obvious. Ali looked excellent in the Shavers fight , and of course Ali called him " the Acorn ".

​@@stanleyjackson5963 The thing you love kills you sometimes. The Ali train had to keep rolling Pacheco, Bindini, Rachman, Youngblood Herber Muhammad, Howard Bingham and more were all part of what was called The Ali Circus.

To say this was a controversial fight is a gross understatement. Norton seemed to do most of the work and connected with Ali's head and body in many more rounds. No wonder Norton was reduced to tears.

Norton was wrongly advised by his corner that he was ahead on the judges scorecards and so he shud just see the final round out and not take any risks. In fact the fight was level going into the last round and norton's safety first approach in the final round cost him the fight and with it the world title

Different fighters react to different styles. Ken Norton gave Ali more problems than even Frazier, and Foreman ABSOLUTELY ANNHILATED both Frazier and Norton. Going back to peak 1966 Ali. George Chuvalo, who Ali called the toughest of the tough, gave Ali all he could handle AND he took the fight at short notice without even training.

I like your analysis Charles. What would help me in ranking my all time top 10 are three fights that never happened. 1) Norton vs Frazier and the date is important. Before 75 or after 76. 2) Foreman and Norton around the time in 77 when Foreman fought Jimmy Young. 3) Foreman and Holmes (just for lineage sake)

If you watch Ali vs Chuvalo 1-15 all the rounds in 1966, it was not a close or tough fight. Ali won just about every round.

@@charleshammer2928 Chuvalo trained enough. Wouldnt have made a shred of difference. He fought once a month back then practically, and his style was one dimensional. Ali also had his training constantly interrupted at the time. Don't forget he was originally sched to fight Terrell at the time and due to the draft controversy it was cancelled and Ali had to leave the US just to get a fight. So his training was affected as well. It was still a shutout over 15 rounds pretty much despite Chuvalo's toughness.

Whether Ali won or lost this fight, it doesn't diminish anything from the fact that he had heart. Norton's style was all wrong for him but Ali still rematched him twice with the second rematch (third fight w/ Norton) being at the back end of his career. Ali was nowhere near the same person after Manila. All his speed, reflexes, stamina, timing, etc., were shot. This wasn't the ideal time to fight Norton but he went ahead with it anyway.

Ali would never duck a opponent. He had to much heart, and to much respect for himself and the sport of boxing. He just took Spinks lightly and didn't train hardly at all. Plus Spinks as well as everyone whoever fought Ali always brought their A Game. Just like in any sport, NBA champs are going to get the best out of every team they play the next season. As well as the Super Bowl champ.

I saw an interview nearly thirty years ago with George Foreman. Foreman said in that interview after the third Ali/Norton fight that Ali actually called him because the championship committee was wanting him to fight Norton for a fourth time and Ali told Foreman that he just didn’t think he could beat Norton. Not at this stage of his career. One of the other respondents in this thread mentioned that Ali might have thrown the Spinks fight to avoid yet another match with Norton. I had not heard that theory before nor even considered it. But while I don’t think it’s true, I can imagine it did cross Ali’s mind. For whatever reason, Norton’s style was just such a puzzle to Ali.

Ali won. He's a long range fighter. He's the most scientific heavyweight boxer of all times. His punches were always on the mark and accurate. The judges give points based on that. Head shots count as 2 points. Body shots count as only 1 point. This not a bar brawl. Muhammed Ali is the greatest of all times.

Goldwing Pilot Ali lost with norton. 8-7 if you put all the benefits on Ali. The round 15 was for Norton cause Ali failed his 10 punches against him and received more punishment.

The 70s Ali was a totally different breed to the 60s version. He was faster and more nimble on his feet in the 60s, but in the 70s he was so much tougher and seemingly made of granite

Talk about stamina. Ali is dancing in the 15th round!!

At worse, this was 7-7-1, a draw. It you look closely, Ali took a lot of Norton’s shots on the arms and hips. Neither are scoring blows. Turn the sound off where those two morons were salivating over Kenny and look at it objectively.

Interview with Mark Cronin October 1976: "Kenny’s style is too difficult for me. I can’t beat him, and I sure don’t want to fight him again. I honestly thought he beat me in Yankee Stadium, but the judges gave it to me, and I’m grateful to them." - Muhammed Ali. Still the greatest. But he won the fight by virtue of being Muhammed Ali - the peoples Champion.

At the press conference, Norton wore sunglasses to hide his black eye and his other eye that was bruised underneath. Ali had no marks on his face. Looked like he had just finished playing racquet ball. Usually the guy who looks beat up is the loser!

Norton lost the 15th round and the fight. Turn off the sound of the losers talking. Plain to see Ali Won 8-6-1. Loved seeing Norton's puffed up face the next day. The Ali Jab will do that.

At 55:42 when the commentator says : "well there is a saying Ali is not afraid of anything" Just made my heart so happy The legend Mohammad Ali ❤️ The way he dance hehe and even chill during a match 😅 makes it more interesting. Haven't seen such a champion like Mohammad Ali and won't be able to see cause he was the only one ❤️ This match is 46 years old but still makes me feels so good and I'm proud of Mohammad Ali Proud that he was a Muslim

I remember meeting Ken Norton when I jumped started his classic car. Back in the late 80's, he trained at Ken Waller's Pacifica Health Spa. I also remembered when both Ken Norton Jr. trained with his Dad Ken. RIP Ken Norton Sr. Humble man like him are rare nowadays!

You have to watch this fight with the volume OFF. Seen this fight a few times and I can never give Norton more than 6 rounds. Ali fought pretty well at this late stage in his career. He was in excellent shape. Norton just didn't do enough. They both had a lot of respect for each other.

Ali is not in excellent shape pal. Look at these photos here and compare it to an earlier Ali.

For those of us that followed Ali from the beginning, it’s incredible how he had deteriorated. This bullshiit of allowing himself to be clobbered in the middle of the ring (a version of the rope a dope) compared to the young genius of the first champion reign, is glaring. Retirement after The Rumble with Big George would have been perfect. It still hurts to know how things turned out.

@@marklennox2151 If you look closely, Ali landed many jabs and head shots. Like 4:1 for thundering blows of norton to body. If norton wanted to win fight this way, he had to knock ali out. He clearly lost.

The 5th round where Ali guaranteed a knockout is really all you have to see. This thread just proves my point about how controversial this bout was. I gave to Norton 11-4.

Ali disappointed & insulted most of us his fans. He was a pure clown. While Ali murked around most of the first 7 rounds as if he was doing an exhibition, Kenny Norton showed up for business. Norton was the technician & the businessman. To most, the better fighter was Norton. Over confidence killed Ali. In obvious desperation, he opened up his mosquito jabs & punches in the last 2 rounds with no effect on Norton. As they say, defeat often sits squarely in the jaws of haughty victory. Ali is my man, but in this fight, Norton was the winner & the new Heavy weight Boxing Champion😢

Interesting to see Marine Corporal Leon Spinks in the ring, he had just won the Gold Medal in the summer Olympics (and brother Michael won the Gold at middleweight), and no one there would've foreseen Leon beating Ali two years later.

Great fight, no doubt, but I really had to give the fight to Norton. I have to say though, I give Ali a ton of credit, that man could take a punch! Almost every punch Norton threw, it sounded like someone took a bat to a heavy bag. Not taking anything away from Norton either. He took some heavy punches from Ali and just laughed them off most of the fight. You just don't see 15 rounds with that kind of intensity anymore. Ahhh, the good ole' days, you gotta love em'!

Ali is the greatest heavyweight of all time. However, he fought here way, way past his prime and Norton was essentially still in his prime. At worst for Norton, the fight should have gone 8-7 for Norton (and more like 9-6 if you don't allow for an even round). If you look at how the corners were reacting between rounds (especially after the 10th round and most obviously after the 15th), they felt Ali had clearly lost the fight. Indeed, the rounds that Norton won he won by a much wider margin that those won by Ali. However, this was a rounds -- not points -- based system, so an Ali "victory" of 8-7 was not unthinkable, despite not appearing to be justified. That being said, when the crowd, Ali's corner and Norton's corner all appeared to draw the same conclusion (that Norton won), it is very odd that all three judges scored a close fight on points unanimously 8-7.

this fight really gives you some amazing insight into the rocky films. You can see direct scenes taken from this fight and the ali/frazier.

Ali will always be my favorite fighter. Close fight. I thought Norton won it by a round. If it's really close, the defending champion always retains. It's like they start the fight with a round in their pocket.

If you say Norton won the fight by a round & Ali, as the champ, starts off w/ one round in his pocket, then according to your logic the fight should have been called a draw, not a W for Ali. BTW - Norton easily won that fight. He came to do battle, while anemic Ali came to survive.

Must know that Ali lost his best 4 years. He refused to go to Vietnam. He was right.

Muhammad Ali will always be the GOAT, Not only as a boxer, but as a human being. He stood firm on his beliefs and lost very important years of his prime because of his beliefs, and yet, once the supreme court ruled to free him, he still held no grudges. Muhammad Ali also celebrated the assassination of Malcolm X. Its on video of him jumping around and celebrating with Louis Farrakhan at the Nation of Islam saviors day convention on February 27 1965. As Elijah Muhammad said that Malcolm is a hypocrite who got what he deserved. Ali was going to accept military induction because they had told him that he would see no combat. And Ali would remain heavyweight champion. And was free to defend his title. But Elijah Muhammad told him not to accept.He did not stand firm on his beliefs. But backed down to his cult leader Elijah Muhammad. Not wanting to end up like Malcolm X. In actuality he wouldn’t stand up to Elijah Muhammad. You need to do some research Joker.

God that was so awesome, and the interview afterwards was fantastic too. Big credit to big George even though he was out thought he was a beast . In the year's after he showed a lot of class when always giving credit to Muhammad who was a cut above .

My apologies, I had been on a discussion with someone about the Forman/Ali matchup. I just noticed and realized you were talking about Norton/Ali. I probably saw all of these when they happened. I always respected everyone of these fighters in their day. Norton had his own style and it seemed to work well for him. Ali, Norton, Forman, Frasier, all of those guys, wanted to take down Ali. He was the feather in their cap, so to speak, in that era. Not necessarily, a cut above regarding Forman and Ali, he just took a beating against the ropes until Forman wore himself out, and then he wasn't as tired and was able to have more energy after Forman was exhausted. If Forman would have stood in the middle of the ring and waited for Ali to come to the center of the ring to fight it would have ended differently and Ali knew that, but George and his coach did not figure that out, and maybe they still haven't, but I believe it probably would have ended differently. I'm not 100% sure, but I am close to 75% confident of what I believe would have happened, but I will give the 25% possibility that I may be wrong, because Ali, was very hard to get a direct hit on. He was capable of moving in and out on an opponent faster than anyone that I can remember. They were both great competitors and I admired their skills and their abilities to endure the training and mental strategy it takes to make it 3 minutes at a time with a worthy heavy weight boxer. All of those men were amazing atheletes and deserve to be recognized for their contributions to the sport of boxing. P.S. I am glad that they have rules to help protect the safety of the boxer. I want to see it as a sport, not as a blood bath. This is not the Roman Colesium, where they watched people die. God help us if we ever accept that type of inhumane cruelty to another human. Bruises that you can get over in a few days or weeks of healing is bad enough, and pushing the envelope.

For me Muhammad Ali remains the heaviest and greatest fighter of all times! That's why when he beats his opponents, they would opt to have a rematch, thinking that they were robbed, and because of disbelief that they have lost the fight! In this fight; Ken Norton threw many punches, of which most of them did not reach the target and some would just hit Ali's gloves, thus, deceiving some of us that they did land, when actually they didn't! The judges gave the right verdict of the fight, I would like to commend them for that. Thanks

just count the punches round for round ali won more rounds then they even gave him, id say Nortan didn't win more than 4 or 5 tops, its punch count really that the point, norton doesn't even really hit that hard, uses mainly upper body and torsoe.

Ali lost a lot that day He was not happy to have won. He knew it was one fight too many, and his Parkinson's disease would be diagnosed some time later. In 2016, the world lost a human being with an extraordinary personality and immense charisma, who was at once candid, joking, intelligent and handsome. His message of peace is universal. It won't be long before we see such a complete athlete on this earth. RIP

I watched this fight very closely. I scored the fight 8 rounds Ali, 7 rounds Norton. I gave rounds 14 and 15 to Norton. There's a saying that says, "In order to be the champion, you have to beat the champion." On this night in Yankee Stadium, Ken Norton just did not beat Muhammad Ali. Ali was obviously past his prime in this fight, and Norton still couldn't beat him, let alone beat him up.

Ali wasn't the same after Frazier 3 in late 1975. The Parkinson's didn't really start showing until after Shavers in late 77 imo. However, with that said, observing his actions and small details here it seems to me it was starting to manifest. Something was beginning to be a little off compared to the Frazier fight from the year before. Not just his ring performance, it seemed in his overall body language.

Back then I leaned for Norton winning this - at worst, a draw. ... I admired both back then, and still do. ... Now, with the hindsight of years while reviewing the fight, I find myself surprisingly giving the bout to Ali. .. Norton spent most of the time brawling, but with no serious damage on Ali. But, Ali, though no serious damage on Norton, definitely controlled the pace and the flow of the fight.

A close fight. Norton gave Ali a tough fight no doubt but I don't get where Norton's corner got too overconfident that he had won the fight. I didn't see Norton CONVINCINGLY beaten Ali to take away the title from him.

I didn’t either. The announcers were building up a Norton win but I just didn’t see it. Ali had bursitis in both his hands at this point and while his punches were not heavy they were still accurate. It was close but the announcers were spewing nonsense.

Old and slow as Ali was, he still won this fight. Those who claim Norton won the last round were not watching very closely as punches landed. In any case, a young Ali would have put Norton to sleep within a few rounds. If they hadn't taken three and a half years away from Ali, he would have walked through everyone, and he would have fought Frazier only once, because he would have beaten him so convincingly that there would have been no demand for a rematch.

Nothing to add to that except that I agree. You have to watch closely and see how many punches Norton landed on gloves, not Ali's face. He did great body work, no doubt. I had it 8-7, giving all 3 rounds I felt were close to Norton. Change one of those rounds and it's 9-6, so easily a UD, the decision was correct. And you're spot on, if this fight takes place in 1967 it looks like the Cleveland Williams fight

I had it 6 rounds Ali, 6 rounds Norton, 3 rounds even. A "Draw". And Ali retained his title rightfully. Norton landed some hard shots for sure but Ali landed far more punches. Kenny Norton was a top 5 guy from that era. ALI was #1 , FRAZIER #2 , FOREMAN #3 , NORTON #4 , QUARRY #5.

@@aleksthegreat4130 I would dispute the fact that George was the stronger, there are many different kinds of strength. If you watched his fight with Ali you would see how easily Ali pushed and pulled him around the ring. What George did have was a very large frame and a long reach with knockout power in both hands, which granted him the ability to fight in a forward leaning stance so that he could use his long reach to keep his opponents at bay and off balance while continuing to follow through with his punching power. This is how Joe Frazier couldn't get close enough to land his big left. Also Joe only fought one way and could not adapt to Georges style of fighting. Also Ken Norton's style of defense was based on punches coming straight at him, Ken could not adapt to Georges wide swinging powerful punches. Ali was the only one who had the adaptability to defeat George.

@@aleksthegreat4130 Foreman wasn't stronger than Ali, he had much stronger punching power yes, but Ali manhandled Foreman the whole fight. Frazier was every bit as strong if not stronger than George but the reach advantage and knockout power Foreman had was too much for Joe because he knew no other way of fighting but to go into his man. As for Norton strength did not come into the fight, Norton's awkward cross arm defense didn't work well against George's wide swinging punches and he could not adapt. Only Ali had the ability to change the rhythm and flow of the fight enough to throw Foreman's fight off kilter.

The white commentary man was biased against Ali.

It’s crazy how unfair judgement has prevailed in boxing! Even a blind man could tell that Ken Norton won the fight straight up. No mistakes about it. I wonder weather the judges sometimes just decide to side with the more popular guy or they really do their job for what it is. The judges were just a disgrace. Respect to the both fighters after all.

The ref says 5 sec and immediately the bell rings when Ali looked in trouble.

1. No he didn’t, you could argue Ali won all 3. We just weren’t used to seeing him fight so defensively but he basically fought Norton the way mayweather fought everyone he ever faced 2. Of course mayweather hates Ali, he’s not gonna like someone that actually fights the top contenders instead of ducking them until they’re too old the way Floyd did

Norton got robbed! He CLEARLY won this fight. Ali never knocked him down, didn't hurt him and Norton scored more real blows.The only reason I can figure that they gave it to Ali was that it was good for boxing to have Ali as champ because he drew people in. But come on! At best you could call this fight a draw. Ali certainly didn't win. This was a fix, a rigged fight.

What norton does is way more impressive

Norton's style was awkward and was physically stronger than Ali, made life very difficult in all 3 fights, although his crab style was no match for Foreman cause he was stronger of the two ...

I love to watch Ali fight but the fact that he did not give an interview after the fight speaks volumes. He knew he did not beat Norton. But to beat the champion you just about have to knock him out. Great fight.

Defensive skills of both fighters was just off the charts incredible. Both just amazing and blocking and slipping punches.

Ummmm Muhammad Ali Hardley knock anyone out after the layoff

Muhammad Ali: 1. Round 4 because Ali was busier but Norton just hit harder. 7,9,11. Round 12 was very close but I gave it to Ali because he hurt Norton at the end of the round. Ali clearly won the 15th and last round, which makes him the winner. Draw: 10. Round 13 Norton was a bit wild but Ali still scored. Norton: 2,3,5,6,8,14

Thing is in a title fight you have to beat the champ decidedly to take his title. Norton didn’t do that!

I attended that fight at Yankee stadium. Upon entering the ring, Ken Norton was cheered, as he was a popular and talented warrior. We then waited some minutes for Ali to show and when he did, the crowd went wild with noise and applause. During the fight, Norton always pressed forward and Ali often retreated into his cocoon versions of rope a dope, offering an anemic offense throughout. Norton was never truly challenged, never in danger. Ali spent the fight blocking as many punches as he could and it was obvious to all that Norton carried the fight forward much more effectively . However, the putrescent 'judges' gave the ridiculous decision to Ali anyway. THE CROWD, INCLUDING MYSELF AND FELLOW COHORTS, BOOED LOUDLY AND LONG. Ken Norton was blatantly robbed of his obvious victory. Everyone left the stadium completely disgusted.

He picked and poked jived then out hustled him this could've been a draw that's how close it was Norton landed many clean blows but at no time was he really beating Ali

When Ali fought it was a huge spectacle in the 70s

Ali's best attribute in later years was his amazing ability to absorb such brutal punches, Norton, Shavers, Foreman, Frazier...kinda sad actually.

I always said Ali greatest asset was his ability to take a punch without that ability he would have lost more fights Foreman would have won against Ali in Africa!

@Mr President Let me correct you. According to Wikipedia 'Ali said during an interview with Mark Cronin in October of 1976: "Kenny's style is too difficult for me. I can't beat him and I sure don't want to fight him again. I HONESTLY believe he beat me in Yankee Stadium, but the judges GAVE it to me and to them I am grateful".' The audio of Ali's sincere remarks are available to all including those that prefer to deny facts and live in a world of unicorns and fairy dust.

Same here, waaay back in 72 or 73 he came to grocery store in our neighborhood. Me and my friends were hanging outside, he talked to us and play boxed with a few of us like we were special. The Greatest by far.

@@skinnyman1434 thanks for sharing your story man. I think that’s awesome. I wasn’t that lucky back then there was no internet we had tv and the fights were rare. I remember my mother woke me up in the middle of the night it was 1974 the fight Rumble in the Jungle I was just a boy. Muhammad Ali has always been my hero. 🥊🇺🇸
