The body shot that Norton hit Ali with in the third round would likely have stopped any other fighter. Ali had an amazing ability to take a punch, to any part of his body, and recuperate quickly. Joe Frazier learned this fact in he and Ali's third fight.

I agree, he had an Incredible ability to take body shots. i also really wonder how he managed to keep his face clean, cause he also many hard punches in the head. i Think the only 3 times while he looked pretty bad after the fights were vs Frazier number 1, vs Norton number 1, and vs Holmes. That's about it

And Ali is actually out of shape for this Norton fight, he didn’t have enough time to train after he had a blood clot removed from his leg before this fight. It was evident since Ali’s body looks soft for this fight compared to how tight and fit his body look for the Foreman and Frazier fights before this.

There are a lot of comments here regarding pre-suspension Ali versus post-suspension Ali. Angelo Dundee told it like it was, when he said (referring to Ali's loss of skills as a result of the three and a half years of his prime that were robbed from him), "What you saw was plenty, but you never saw his best!" In other words, Ali's peak of boxing skills would have been achieved during and/or after those three and a half years had they not been stolen from him-and what skills those would have been!

Actually, Ali was out of shape for this fight but still can take it. Look how soft Ali’s body look here compared to how he looks for the Frazier and Foreman fights. Ali fought the Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki less than 3 months before this third Norton fight, Inoki laid on his back almost the entire fight so Ali cannot punch him, and he kept kicking Ali's legs. Ali had to undergo surgery afterward to remove blood clot from leg. Realistically, this fight should have been postponed.

I was at this fight and the one thing that really stood out was how freakin' cold and breezy it was that night. And the fighters did not have the benefit of the traditional overhead ring lights that I'm sure would have given them a little warmth. At the fight I had Norton winning very close, but with MANY even rounds. When I have seen the fight since then, I thought Ali won. It probably stuck with Kenny a long time about how he should have fought those last rounds with more urgency. I don't know what Bill Slayton was telling him in between rounds, but it stunk.

Exactly. people get so caught up into one particular punch that they forget that in boxing like anything else, scoring the most points wins. The fighter who lands the most punches win, not whoever throws the hardest single punch-unless it knocks them completely out of course. But if one fighter throws 300 punches and lands 250 and his opponent throws 100 and lands 50 in a full 15 round fight, its obvious who wins.

The Cleveland Williams that fought Ali was finished, he had been shot and, almost killed by that police officer who shot him with a magnum and, took away alot of Williams' movement. Sonny would have still whupped Ali when they fought but it was Ali that could sell the fights and, poor Sonny had to go. Ali didn't fight Cleveland Williams when Ali was coming up. He ducked early Williams. Williams would have beaten Patterson but they ducked Williams like a plague. Tell me about it.

Muhammad was perhaps the best sportsman l ever saw. Yet, though he had lost most of his zest for boxing at this moment, he knew still, there hadn't been any opponent he couldn't take from and account himself in the ring. That was a man. Don't think he quite got over the bitter, hateful prejudice that was inflicted at the summit of his career by denouncing his rightful title and proscribing his professional boxing license for all most 4 years. Just line up few of the best, excellent opponents, and challenges that he fought, lost to, and again defeated in the ring. That is why he is the greatest.

+Rush Ron Here is a source to the punch stats. www.boxingscene.com/forums/view.php?pg=muhammad-ali-ken-norton-compubox It does not matter if you don't care that the total punchers landed was far higher for Norton than it was Ali. Even if you go by the punches landed by a round to round bases, Norton won 10 rounds to Ali who would only win 5, so Norton should have won twice as many rounds as Ali, and in the rounds Ali did lose he was dominated by Norton. I think Ali won the second fight fare and square, and it shouldn't of even been a split decision, but Notron knew he won this fight, and so does Ali.

I was torn because I, like most everyone else, was a huge Ali fan. But I also really liked Kenny and that Philly shell, crab like defensive style of his. I like the fact that he came from nowhere in 73 and upset Ali to put his name on the map. Ali got this decision but honestly, I called it a draw which would mean hardly retained his belt. Ali should have retired after this but definitely after heat won the title back from spinks in 78. definitely should not have fought Larry Holmes 2 years later and of course not Renaldo Snipes in 81. I couldn't even watch that fight because I knew he would lose badly.

Never once did I give Norton more rounds. I do however believe Ali was foolish to continue fighting after this. Also Norton while heart broken at the decision, in many ways should blame his own foolishness by giving away the 11th rd, and doing nothing for 2 min and 30 sec of rd 15.

Ali-cooper first fight was before Ali won the title . He was not in his prime. 3 years later when he was in his prime, he beat cooper easily and wasn't touched. Norton no match for prime Ali like I said.
