Muhammad Ali vs Jerry Quarry II 27.6.1972 - NABF Heavyweight Title

Спорт

The rematch between Jerry Quarry and Muhammad Ali. Ali had beaten Quarry on his return to the ring in 1970 following his 3 year exile when Quarry was forced to retire after just 3 rounds because of a bad cut. (Watch that fight here - • Muhammad Ali vs Jerry ... ) Quarry never really got the chance to show what he could do so he was biting at the bit for this rematch. More info below...
Since returning to the ring in 1970, Muhammad Ali had only lost 1 fight, that was against Joe Frazier for the World Heavyweight Championship in 1971. Although not a career killing loss, Ali still needed to rebuild himself and focused on the NABF Heavyweight title instead for the next couple years. Winning the NABF belt initially in 1970 by stopping Oscar Bonavena, Ali vacated it so he could face Joe Frazier, so his first step was to regain it, which he did against old stable mate, Jimmy Ellis, in July 1971. Ali successfully defended the title against Buster Mathias and George Chuvalo both by decision while in-between also traveling to Japan and Switzerland to pick up non-title defense wins against Mac Foster and Juergen Blin. Ali's record at the time of his rematch with Quarry was 36-1.
Quarry had recovered well from his original loss to Ali in 1970 by picking up 6 wins in a row against MOSTLY reputable competition. He knocked out the European, Commonwealth and BBBoC Heavyweight Champion Jack Bodell within 1 round and then did the same to former South American Heavyweight Champion,
Eduardo Corletti! In his most recent fight, Quarry outpointed talented black fighter Larry Middleton over 10 very close rounds. His record heading into the rematch with Ali was 43-5-4.
Quarry is a fighter never to take lightly. Although not the most technically sound and he was easy to hit, Quarry did possess a decent a chin, heavy hands and he had that Irish fire in his heart, he would never give up. Quarry was always looking for the knockout, and he was not content to settle for points, he liked to fight in close and make things a brawl. Muhammad Ali on the other hand was, although unorthodox, technically superior and arguably the most talented boxer of the 60's and 70's. Ali didn't have instant knockout power, but he did have the best chin in the division, the fastest hands in the division and near endless stamina. Ali was not a brawler like Quarry, he was an out-boxer, jabbing from a distance and always moving, never staying in one place making himself elusive as possible. It was very much a clash of styles. Quarry started strong, trying to bully his way in close and even lifted Ali off his feet in the opening seconds during a clinch, almost as if to show Ali that he was not afraid of him. Ali barely reacted however, and stuck to his game plan of jabbing and moving. As the rounds went on, Quarry was starting to get overwhelmed by the number of punches Ali was throwing and losing energy from all of his own missed or blocked punches (which there were many). By round 7 Quarry looked absolutely spent, breathing heavy and struggling to raise his hands to protect himself. Ali saw this and literally WALKED forward to end it, appearing confident and unconcerned with his arms down, even beckoning the referee over to try and get him to stop the fight, before landing a series of heavy hooks and uppercuts with Quarry on the ropes which spelled the end. As Quarry stumbled backwards, the referee stopped the fight, awarding Ali a 7th Rd TKO in one of his best performances since returning to the ring.

Quarry was a very good fighter. Quick, aggressive, tremendous heart. But he wasn't an elite heavyweight like Ali. Still, I'm not on board with the bashing of Quarry on here. He carved out a respectable career in the toughest heavyweight era ever, and that's something to be proud of.

Fair enough point too John!! But!! Quarry d v done exactly the same thing Himself, and, carrying' his Irish temper, into the ring and, the fight!! Was NOT very smart of him!! ALI was by farr, and away, THEE better boxer of the 2 of them, but he was NEVER GOING TO DEFEAT Ali!! AND!! I am NOT being disrespectful, too either of them!!! Quarry was a Champion and a Brilliant boxer, but!! ALI was just a freak of nature!! AND I greatly admired, and respected both of them!! All the best to u and Your loved ones John, and Kind regards Pete.

When Jerry Quarry got older, he got Dementia Pugilista and died at 53. He was living with his caretaker and brother Mike. There was something on Dateline or 48 hours or one of those shows and they talked with Jerry and his brother. i think it was 1998.

Well then he shouldn't have watched it, if it shook him so badly. Don't get me wrong, Quarry had a heart of a lion, and he was a great boxer. But all these excuses for him makes me sick. Let's face it, he was outclassed. He couldn't stand a chance against Frazie or Ali, or Norton. 1st fight with Ali, sure it was stopped because of the cut, but was it close? Not really. And against Frazier Jerry held his own for a round or 2, but then when Joe was just getting warmed up, Quarry was already running out of steam... It's not like he lost a fight that was in control of, because he cut easily...

An 'Avalanche' of PUNCHES!!, is exactly what Ali piled onto Brian London, and I think it was IN London FOLKS!!, It's worthwhile looking at or, 'Checking out', if uve never seen it folks, And then!!, U will see Ali at his fastest!!, AND!!, The very moment, that Brian went down, Ali, told a cornermen, ..'Geez, I hope I didn't reallly hurt him'!!,😕it made Ali feel sad, as London just refused, too go down, and Ali, only just wanted to get it 'over and done with,' And I know, in at least 6 of Ali's fights, he was just 'taking it easy' on his already defeated opponents!!, AND, he practically, BEGGED!!, OF THE REF!!, 'TOO ' PLEASE PLEASE'!!,STOP THE FIGHT REF!!,😕AND, he was proven to be 100pc correct too folks!!, As, On each and every single occasion!!, sure enough, the referee DID stop every one of the fights!!, AND, believe it or not!!, After he ANHIALATED Foreman, he DID send 1 of his corner men,.. ' to PLEASE!!, go and see if he's okay please John!!??,And why!!, Because, John was my late mothers cousin!!, AND, he DID!!, Go and Check on George, in his change room, after no one else, except, for FOREMANS own 'crew'cared less whether George Foreman was hurt or not!!, AND, Ironically, John's best friend, he grew up with🙂, was 1 of George's Cornermen!!🙂 and, he just said quietly, He's okay Thank u kindly John, and, then John, told Ali as he was leaving, He's okay Mohammad!!, and, Ali said he was grateful, that he was okay!!,so? Ali, was a wonderful human being, and humanitarian too folks!!, Anyway, I just thought I'd tell u all, about what Ali, did too London!! AND, I don't like too, see, ANYONE!! HURT BADLY!!,😕Because it's just NOT!! In my nature!! AND, it wasn't in Ali's nature either!! All the best to u and Your loved ones folks.

I had a great deal of respect for Jerry, as a hard man who gave his best every fight, but he was unwise in saying that Ali had cut him with a butt in the first fight. At the end of that fight I was positively impressed when Jerry went to Muhammad and congratulated him on the win. When I heard that some time later that he claimed that a butt had caused the bleeding and that Muhammed was not fit enough to beat him I thought, "Ali will make a mess of him if they fight again." This, along with the Cleveland Williams fight, is Ali at his dazzling best. A complete whipping which Jerry brought upon himself.

Look at the bums today, Fury, Wilder, AJ, look at the bums before in different weigh classes, Mayflower, Pacquiao, Hatton, etc. none ever saw their opponent in trouble and motion for the ref to stop it. Jerry Quarry, lived until he was 56-58 however, the last few years of his life, he didn’t remember who he was, how to dress himself or simply tie a shoe. He was broke and he was a mess. He had his brother taking care of him and I’d like to believe that he lived just a smidgen if a bit longer becomes of Ali taking mercy on him. What Ali did in the ring speaks Volumes what he did outside was even more important. Lebron, Jordan, Gretzky, Brady, Rodgers, Babe Ruth, Pete, Bill Russell, Curry, Magic Bird, none of them Can compare to Ali’s left nut….

Ali is anything but boring. He plays chess with an opponent for a couple of rounds to get his timing down. Then once he has that he chips away with that left jab and fantastic flurries of punches. His strength wasnt power, it was accuracy and consistency. Hed hit a guy in the eye in exactly the same spot over and over with that left jab. And there wasnt anything they could do about it because many more times than not they never saw it coming. He was really good at the reach around right hook also that came up and over. You put that with speed and his angles he would set up with footwork? You have a perfect boxer. Most athletic, strongest and quickest heavyweight ever. Strong as in endurance and overall body strength. Guy had abs of steel to take many of the punches he did and a chin like a rock. Boring my ass.
