Floyd Patterson holds 4 records in boxing. 1. First gold medalist to win a title. 2. First man to regain the heavyweight title. 3. Youngest undisputed heavyweight champion of all time. 4. (My personal favourite) Patterson was knocked down and got off the canvas to defend his title more than anyone else before or since at heavyweight. Which means whilst Patterson didn’t have the best of chins, he had a massive heart and never quit. This aspect is the opposite of Tyson. Mike never recovered from a knockdown to win a fight. Mike had a better chin than floyd but not as big a heart

there were a couple that he did EXACTLY that. patterson was one and so was Terrell. he punished floyd for all the smack he was talking and he did that with Terrell for no wanting to call him Ali. so yes, he was petty and went in to dominate completely .

Floyd was 165 pounds in the Olympics, and was purposely bulked up to heavyweight because there was less money fighting at light heavyweight. This put him at a big disadvantage against really big guys like Liston and Ali, because he was a natural 175 pounder

I saw Patterson fight live about a year before this. Even though he was in his mid thirties, he was in good shape and still had really fast hands. I thought Patterson was ahead in this fight before it was called, or at the most it was even. Patterson was by now familiar with Ali's style and knew how to counteract it. Floyd also showed good footwork.

History has treated Patterson poorly. Liston had his number, something Liston did was evidently Patterson's weak spot, because though Liston destroyed Patterson, Patterson could get through Ali's defenses remarkably well, slip most of his punches and give him all he wanted and more. Yet Ali had Liston's number. Strange how that works sometimes. For a 37-year-old to hang tough with Ali, the only difference between them being Ali's punches were of more consequence with him being the larger man, is remarkable. I think the main thing is the chin. Patterson had a poor chin for a champ, and a heavy hitter like Liston was his weakness, whereas while Ali had good power, he never had great power. You scale Patterson up 10% and give him a little better chin he might have been one of the all time greats rather than just another champ who held the belt between greats.

Ali was indeed dragging this fight out both for the heck of it and to dignify Floyd for whom he had no animosity. Floyd quit after this. He'd been unbeaten in the 70s and on a 9-0 roll including Bonavena soon before this, so hoping to somehow get a 5th title shot (which would have made him first / only man to fight for the heavy title in 3 decades). Frazier was in his period of protecting the title between the Ali 1 punishment and destruction by Foreman. Joe would have steamrolled Floyd a la Liston at this point.

True on Folley and Machen, but D'Amato was doing the ducking, not Floyd. He defended against Rademacher who was having HIS FIRST PRO FIGHT, then next against Brian London who was gifted a #8 rating. They AVOIDED LISTON FOR 4 YEARS, 58-61, and also avoided Cleveland Williams in that period. And consider Floyd won the title from at the time an ancient 40 year old light-heavy twice his age. In sum, Floyd was never genuine heavy champ caliber, he just came along at the right time (Marciano's retirement) and had the "right" management (avoid punchers).

When Ali got roasted on the Dean Martin series they filmed regularly at the MGM casino in Las Vegas Floyd Patterson and Rocky Graciano were there also by Ali's invite. Essentially this fight was a boxing demo for boxing fans. Patterson and Rocky had no way to beat Ali. It's an exibition fight. It's acceptable tradition for money and fans to enjoy. Don't be saps. 😅

After watching all the Ali fights I can find here are my observations. No one has put the intense direct pressure on him that we saw from prime Tyson. Not even Joe Frazier though he was the closest. Floyd Patterson though trained by Cus you can see In the opening min of this fight was not big or strong enough nor did he attack with the ferocity and power of a prime Tyson. Ali is clearly the smartest and maybe more importantly the toughest fighter we’ve ever seen however he simply never had to deal with a prime Tyson’s ferocity and power. Ernie Shavers had tremendous power but he did not attack with ferocious vigor. George Foreman same. Ken Norton neither. That being said Ali took unbelievable damage from those fighters and still beat them so it’s an open question how he would have reacted to a prime Tyson being up inside of him immediately and constantly delivering tremendous body shots and uppercuts.

🤣It's pointless to compare fighters from different eras, and fans get carried away. How many times was Lennox Lewis asked why didn't he fight Mike in his prime. Lewis's reply "I was still in the amateurs when Mike was in his prime." For me the question should be Ali or Mike, both in their prime. Mike was asked this and his reply, Ali couldn't throw a hook or a body shot - he'd have fucking killed me." Remember two things, the first man to beat Mike was the first who wasn't afraid of him. Ali was well past his prime when he knocked out Big George, who WAS in HIS prime. Anyway, TGOAT won titles at 8 different weights.
