Muhammad Ali vs. Jimmy Ellis | JIMMY THIS IS NOT SPPARING |

Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (creativecommons.org/licenses/b...)
Date: 1971-07-26
Location: Astrodome, Houston, Texas, USA
Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Ellis fought each other in a boxing match at the Astrodome in Houston on July 26, 1971. Ali won the bout through a technical knockout when the referee stopped the fight in the twelfth round. This was Ali's first boxing match after Fight of the Century, and had originally been scheduled as a bout between Wilt Chamberlain, who had challenged him, then trained for the bout with Cus D'Amato, but later withdrew from the fight.
Ali was guaranteed $450,000 against an option of 45% of all income, and Ellis was guaranteed 20% of all income.
The fight was shown on closed-circuit television in about 200 locations in the United States and Canada, and it was beamed via satellite to 34 other countries.
Attendance in the Astrodome was 31,947.
Angelo Dundee worked with Ellis for the fight. He was Ali's trainer, but he was Ellis' trainer and manager. Working with Ellis meant a bigger share of the purse for Dundee. Ali understood completely and got Harry Wiley, who had worked with Henry Armstrong and Sugar Ray Robinson, to be his trainer for the Ellis fight.
Ali and Ellis fought for the vacant NABF heavyweight title, which had been relinquished by George Foreman.
Ali was a 7 to 2 favorite.
Assistant trainer Drew (Bundini) Brown forgot to pack Ali's trunks, and the former champ was forced to wear a pair of all white trunks that were too big.
It was a fairly even fight for the first three rounds, but Ali took control after hurting Ellis with a right hand in the fourth round. Ellis said the right hand "hurt me so bad I couldn't really fight my best after that."
The referee stopped the fight at 2:10 of the 12th round with Ellis on his feet taking punishment. There were no knockdowns in the fight.

One of Ali's best post-exile fights, being one of the few in which he moved, feinted and jabbed in the same inimitable style that he used before the 3.5-year exile. He was never the same as the 1962-67 Ali again but IMO this overlooked fight was the closest to that version of Ali despite being 10lb+ heavier, short on stamina and trying not to hurt his childhood friend Eliis - also his stablemate, sparring partner and brief ex-champ (in his absence); en route to another shot at regaining the title, but in better physical and mental condition than when he challenged a prime Frazier only 5 months and 2 comeback fights after he returned from the layoff. All while Ellis was trying to take his head off. An interesting fact here is that. for the only time, Ali had the trainer of his self-confessed ring hero in his corner for this one: Sugar Ray Robinson's trainer - the great Harry Wiley.

@@jameshampton6053 because Ali wanted what was rightfully his (the world heavyweight championship) and put Frazier in his place which was off the heavyweight champion seat. Had Ali never been unjustly banned from boxing by the U.S. government, Frazier and Foreman wouod never have become heavyweight champions in the 1970s because Ali would have defended his title the entirety of the 1960s and 1970s in what would have been the longest defending streak of any heavyweight champion.

"Bordering" and "exact" are somewhat contradictory terms. To be "exact"; Oct. 22/67, Ali vs. Folley, Ali's last fight, pre layoff. March 26/70, Ali vs Quarry, Ali's first fight, post layoff. I was simply saying 3 years in general terms. Actually 3 years and half years is not "exactly" correct but close enough.🤔🙂@@DRose2Fast

These guys are friends. Ali could have put him away several times but didn't. My dad used to say that Ali knows he can beat the guy but let's them 'put on a good show' for mom and dad. Here, Ali could have clobbered him into unconsciousness but didn't. Like several other fights, he waits for the ref to stop it. Just class. Of, Frazier and Norton are exceptions to that philosophy. Frazier was simply too 'Smokin'' and Norton was something Ali could never figure out. They put on a good show simply being in the ring.

Ali the gent he was held back on jimmy, especially last round, waiting for the ref to step in so Ali didn't have to off load on his old sparing partner, Ali created a lot of wealth for boxers, media, establishments, venues, etc. His kindness was his beauty. As we were all growing up boxing we all imitated the Ali style loose always a moving target. He came to tile hill Coventry our boxing club to open British heavy weight champ jack Bodels chip shop ,in Jardine crescent, the crescent was mobbed for the great one,, a day to remember,
