Muhammad Ali and The Fight Doctor - A Cautionary Tale.

Спорт

A look back at the relationship of Muhammad Ali and Ferdie Pacheco, why their paths eventually diverged and how "The Greatest" became a cautionary tale for modern boxers and mixed martial artists.
Much more footage in this video than I'd usually use but I'd imagine some people are unfamiliar with Pacheco and the old clips of sports writers and boxing analysts discussing legends like Ali and Joe Frazier is always quality.

Man that pic of Ali starring at the other corner with two black eyes whilst sitting reminds me of a wounded lion out in the Savannah, just fucking fighting until the body gives out. Just sheer warrior spirit. Dana's right though, you need people who are more rational thinkers in this business of untamed, just ready to live and die by the sword warriors...cause yes! sometimes you have to save the fighters from themselves! Great video again!

As a 90s baby, all I’ve really ever been told about is the legacy of Ali. Even the coverage I’ve seen/read about him in the latter stages of his career was more about his *body* failing him, not his mind or how the two coincided in his downfall. I legit have never seen that clip of him slurring his words like that and it saddens me how much of his decline has been glossed over and hidden. Aside from how generally amazing this video was, I thank you for educating me more on Ali. I’m already a sub but I really have to recommend your channel to my friends or I’d be doing you a disservice. All your vids are amazing but I think this is your best yet

One of Ferdie’s last interviews were about the Inoki vs Ali. When they witnessed and learned of Inoki’s intention fully demolish Ali. Ferdie and Dundee stepped in to renegotiate the rules which led for the full protection of Ali against joint locks, takedowns, and stand up Kicks. Inoki while laying down- destroyed Ali’s legs. That was the end of Ali as we knew it.

I was sparring with a young heavyweight prospect 6'2 250lbs named Rodolfo, this kid has amazing hand speed with a lot of power. He's only 24. I sparred with him at least 4 times. We sparred about 2 to 3 rounds. The days after the sparrings. I had serious headaches and my speech started to slur. I'm glad that I'm not a professional. Because I can only imagine the amount of money these boxers are getting offered and they have to think about taking care of paying the bills and their kids. It's easy for us to say that they should retire, but it's not a easy decision to make for a prize fighter.

So I was a TV photog in Tucson and one of the older photogs told me how he interviewed Muhammad Ali before he died. He talked about how sad it was and that always stuck with me because we both loved watching boxing matches on slow nights in the newsroom, but he got a glimpse into what it costs fighters. That story always stuck with me.
