We have a great day with some amazing finds! An Enos Stopper, another beautiful marble and, is this our best or rarest find yet? An incredible gem from the Victorian period - a beautiful glass hatpin top! Hatpins became fashionable after bonnets, which were tied under the chin to prevent them from blowing away, fell from favour. The only down side was that the new hats were simply perched on top of the wearer's head, ready to fly off in the wind. The solution? Pin the hat in place with a long pin that passed through the wearer's hair.
These pins became notorious as weapons that could be wielded against unwanted male attentions... Of course, men didn't much care for that and so hatpins became vilified as did the women who sought to protect themselves. But, like it or not, hatpins were a tool in the female emancipation movement - they both gave woman a means to assert authority over who got close to them, at least a little, and they made men rethink female fragility while the emancipation movement grew in force.
Sadly, hatpins became the subject of legislation following a spate of deaths in which the humble hatpin was found to be the deadly weapon at the scene. Hatpins eventually fell from favour when women entered the workforce while men served in the armed forces. They were dealt a further blow in the 1960s when young women found they had more disposable income than their parents - as the youth of the day were not big hat wearers, the hatpin declined yet more... When the church changed its dress code in the late 1960s, the hatpin became the fashion exception in place of the rule it once was!
This wee gem is a real stand out find for us! Its the first one we found and it found its way to us by pure chance!
The Gas Works
Long before natural gas was found below the North Sea, gas was manufactured in factories like the one that used to stand here on the shore of the River Forth. Gas was made from coal, through an abstractive process using heat and distillation. Coal gas must be scrubbed to remove toxins, before it was stored in large cylinders that were once a feature along the motorways and hidden away in towns throughout the UK.
We hope you enjoyed this week's video! Thank you so much for watching.

Update on Scotland's restrictions:
We continue to follow restrictions so that we can work safely, responsibly, and legally.
Guidelines in Scotland have now changed. We are now allowed to meet outside with two others from another household. Being the very careful pair that we are, we will maintain our stricter approach!.
Our policies:
- Since March 2020, we have met with no one at all - and we continued to isolate even when restrictions were relaxed.
- We never film in a busy location - aside from maintaining isolation, we could not make restful, calming, or relaxing content in a busy area.
- Since March 2020 we have restricted our travel to distances that allow us to get to our location, film our content, and return home, without ever visiting local amenities, entering any buildings etc. This gives us a reasonable window to work in while also maintaining that we are not out for very long.
- We only film once a week, and we always do that mid-week. If we arrive in an area and people are present, we leave without getting out of the car.
Our policies are simple and entirely concerned with maintaining social distancing so that we can be safe and so that we can ensure the safety of others. We will continue to follow these policies fully, and we will cease outdoor filming altogether should government guidance change.

    Wish I could find as interesting things on my beaches as you do yours, but you have a couple of thousand years of history on your side, not discounting our great indigenous nations, who left very little trace. Truly enjoy your videos

    There was a lot of concentrated activity on the two river systems we visit most, and over a very long period of time. Its crazy to think about it sometimes - Macbeth and MacDuff were real folks and they lived and walked where we do! We are very lucky that it gives us a lot to talk about and some really cool finds... I guess these days, as folks begin to turn to indigenous peoples in the Pacific and Americas as good careful custodians of the land, there is much to think about for the future! Hope the sea sends some really great finds your way! :D Thank you so much! xo

    @scottishmudlarking

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much! It was a nice quiet birthday! :D We found a few really cool things, the spring holder is really unusual for us! The cave is one in a system of caves along this coast, we plan to look at them when we can - the other caves, just down the coast, attract a fair bit of attention - we hope to get one of Craig's old colleagues involved as he's something of an expert on these caves. The one in the film is called the gas or gasworks cave. It was blocked off by the gas works for years. Like the other caves, there is evidence that it was occupied and used for many, many years - Picts are known to have been resident in these caves when the Roman's occupied the land on the other side of the river and some of the caves have carvings covering an extended period of influences! We'll be sure to get along to them when we can! Best wishes, many thanks, xo

    Oh! So sorry to hear that... I hope you are feeling much better now, how awful! We're so glad the video sent a wee bit of cheer to you - big hugs! The caves are fascinating! They have been in use for thousands of years as dwellings, stores, animal husbandry and possibly as ritual spaces too! We know that the Picts (the peoples who live here before the Scots or Scoti) lived in these caves at some point... it is remarkable to think that people looked over the water here when the Romans marched across the land south of here. We hope to do something about the caves quite soon! :D Thank you so much for your kind words, we wish you well - blessings to you and yours, stay safe and healthy! Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

    Nicole and Craig, I remember reading "the Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu" and I believe the books sometimes mentioned the "Gas Works" along the Thames in London, but they were a common means of energy throughout parts of The British Empire. There are many Refrigerators, stoves and other Camping and mobile travel homes that use gas, but it's generally propane or some natural gas. Steampunk ,indeed, I just saw a steampunk version of a Secret Garden Garden and although clever, just wasn't my thing. You transform glass :larvae" into butterflies! Cheers, Rik Spector

    Hello! :D You reminded me of so many old films and Sherlock Holmes stories when you mentioned Fu Manchu and the London Gas Works! Such interesting and evocative places! Although we can't get inside, we went to visit an old Water Works yesterday, we were just driving around and saw this amazing tall red brick building looking nothing like anything around it! The Victorians sure made town and city infrastucture a spectacle! I just looked up the Secret Garden - I'd not heard about that, loved the book and, at least one old film version... Hmmm! I think you're right about this version... Might give that a miss! That's such a lovely description - thank you so much! :D Best wishes, Nicoel & Craig xo

    Do you ever leave things on the beach for future Mudlarks? Broken glass, or ceramics, glass pebbles, marbles, beads?

  • @scottishmudlarking

    @scottishmudlarking

    We only ever take what we can use or if it fits with a collection - often we make little heaps of things for others to find - we never take more than a small bag with maybe twenty or so thing at the most! But, if you mean, do we take things to leave behind... we have not done that... The areas we tend to look have had a very long history of use, both before and after the industrial revolution, so there is always lots of new things being washed up or coming out from where it was part of al old dump! :D Thank you so much! best wishes, xo

    Lovely finds! Thanks for pointing out Arthur's Seat across the firth. I've had the pleasure of climbing it both times I've been to Edinburgh, so I got to have an "I know where that is!" moment. I couldn't believe how red the rust was on your iron items. Was it really that incredibly red (instead of orangey) or was that a trick of the camera and lighting?

  • @scottishmudlarking

    Oh, that's really cool! We really have to try to point things/places out a little more... Hope its not lng before you get to climb Arthur's Seat again - the views up there are incredible! The rust was a pretty intense colour, deeper in tone than the orangey tone I've seen more often... It looked as if it was still wet, though I can't see that it could have been! Best wishes... we'll have to get over to Arthur's Seat to point the camera the other way! :D xo
