Today we are in North Queensferry - the old pilgrims gateway to Fife! It’s sucha diverse place - as we make our way around the coast, we move from deep mud, to volcanic rock, before ending up on golden sands!
We begin in an open natural harbour, where Nicole finds her first ever clay pipe bowl (it’s partial, but its a first ever find! As we make our way around the shoreline, we have some great finds - clay pipe stems, pottery shards, and some nice glass, before Craig spots something bright yellow! Its a tiny, super cute glass button, dating back to the 1930s. But there is more - a gorgeous red half cat’s eye marble!
After a few hours of cloudy skies above us we're all very happy to see the sun break through to reveal more finds in the mud! Nicole finds lots of of very old pirate sea glass before finding several textured glass pieces that look very much like they could be from Victorian fairy lights! Craig takes a dive into the history of fairy lights (AKA ‘The Burglar’s Horror’) in today's history section.
The tide is coming in fast, but we are in luck, once out of the muddy harbour, the ground level is a little higher buying us more time. A close look at the sands is rewarded with a lovely bead… then another bead… and then another! What a day for beads! The best of the bunch though is Nicole's rare Neiger Brothers green milk glass cube bead, featuring a geometric pattern - this is around 100 years old, it must have been a very nice piece of jewellery, we wonder who lost it all those years ago!
As the afternoon nears its end, we find ourselves on golden sands, just below the famous Forth bridge - A stopper stem gleams in the low afternoon sunshine as if offering us a parting gift!
We bid Gail and Alex a fond farewell and promise to meet up again soon!
Its time to make jewellery with Nicole... Given how lucky we were with beads, its all a bit bead themed, aside from that lovely golden, summery, tiny yellow button, which so resembles a honey pot that Nicole pairs it with a cute bee. This joins the Neiger Brothers green cube bead, standalone pendant, and a turquoise bead, finished with a lovely Celtic heart. Sea glass bead teapots have been out of the shop for too long, so we put a few in, along with a bottle of volcanic rocks and shells that we found on the beach below the Forth Bridge.
Lately, Nicole has been looking back at Spongeware designs, so Craig challenged Nicole to create a new from old Spongeware design. We think the designs look fantastic on a mug - check them out! The mugs come in conventional pottery and an enamel tin mug for outdoor use, Oh! That's perfect for a mudlarking coffee break!
It’s been another amazing day with Gail and Alex and if you haven’t subscribed to their channel ‪@NorthernMudlarks‬ do head over and do so ☺ We are already planning another mudlarking adventure together.
We hope you enjoyed today's video... Thank you so much!

--Update on Scotland's COVID restrictions--
We continue to follow restrictions so that we can work safely, responsibly, and legally.
Guidelines in Scotland allow us to meet with up to 6 others and we may travel freely.
--Our policies--
- Since March 2020, we have met with no one at all - we will now meet outside with a limited number of people.
- We never film in a busy location - aside from maintaining isolation, we could not make restful, calming, or relaxing content in a busy area.
- We will continue to restrict our travel distances so that we never need to visit local amenities, entering any buildings etc. This gives us a reasonable window to work in while also maintaining that we are not out for very long.
- We only film once a week, and we always do that mid-week. If we arrive in an area and people are present, we leave without getting out of the car.
Our policies are simple and entirely concerned with maintaining social distancing so that we can be safe and so that we can ensure the safety of others. We will continue to follow these policies fully, and we will cease outdoor filming altogether should government guidance change.

good afternoon, the iron plate with the pattern on it could be the push button of a german canteen from the second world war. I have a few and they look the same. What a nice video by the way👍

That beautiful blue bead would be sweet if flanked on either side by ok pipe stem remnants on a necklace

That particular blue bead is sold but we could certainly make something with a bead and clay pipe stems :) Thanks so much Tom

The 'Derby all British' would have been an ink bottle, Kate from K&C found one. Lovely finds, all those beads! Love what you did with the Niger bead! 😀 x

Any tips on removing small stones from inside the bead 🤔

I usually pick them out very carefully with a pin! It takes ages but it is the safest way ( you still stand a chance of chipping the edge of the bead! ) but be careful. You can try drilling the stones and sand out under water with a very small drill bit and a steady hand - I wouldn't recommend that if you have no experience drilling though. Thank you!
