Mud & Ruts vs Ford F-150 Lightning - Can Ford's Electric Pickup Do Well Off-Road?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We take the Ford F-150 Lightning off-road to see how it performs. This pickup truck is let down by its low clearance, but it does come packing a full-time four-wheel drive system and plenty of skid plates plus an off-road mode. So we decided to run it into the mud to find out how the F-150 Lightning handles itself off-road. Let us know what you think below.

    For a truck not meant to go "off-road", it did pretty well. That course is rougher than 75% of what people would subject this truck to. Great job TK!

    I think that percentage is only because many people buy trucks because they have powerful V8s 4 doors and can tow stuff, Like the average American sedan and wagon did for generations. The problem is Detroit and Japan only sell fuel economy boxes in front wheel drive with no frame so they're only good for hauling people not people and your stuff. But if we were to look at people who actually use their truck for work, most construction sites and farms have far worse spots to get stuck with your truck. So you are correct with your numbers but not because the majority of truck buyers use their truck as a truck, they are substituting for a lack of power full frame cars.

    I think this might be the most nuanced and reasonable take from an internet comment I have seen on the rise of Trucks, SUVs and crossovers. They took over, because sedans got worse from a practical sense. Sure they have better power, and they have better rides and fuel economy, but from a practical perspective you can't use them like the old boats. You can't even tow small light campers with them, trunks might be big but the openings are restricted. Where I live, some legal roads have changes in grade so sudden that modern sedans with their low clearance can't actually make it without some damage. I shouldn't NEED a crossover so my kid can visit his grandma, yet I do. I'm fact, I actually have to fix the paintwork under my wife's car because she took our kid to grandmas, her car has 6 inches of clearance.

    Fair point, not to defend this, but a general statement: the non off-road packages of all half tons would be similar for performance regardless of propulsion unit. Example, the Silverado in its non trail boss versions has highway tires, 8" of clearance, no lockers (lsd if you get the z71 package), and horrible breakover if you have running boards. The majority of trucks sold have little to mild off road ability off the lot. The fact that reviewers keep testing tremor/trail boss/trd/etc packages has planted this idea that all trucks are off road monsters which throughout history isn't the case. Those trims are not the ones the average buyer gets.

  • @imnotusingmyrealname4566

    Exactly. Normal trucks are not meant for off-roading, they are meant for hauling dirty things in the bed and heavy towing except almost nobody buying trucks today does that so marketing needs something else to sell you these extremely expensive and unnecessary vehicles for daily driving.

    My old man has a work spec F-150, single cab, 8 footer. The "dream" truck of many online commenters. No screens, interior is vinyl and plastic. That thing is hilarious when it hits dirt. It's got the 4x4 to force itself over mild ruts, but you can hear the frame screaming the whole time and he about ripped off one of the running boards last year. Definitely not meant to go off-road, and in its current state is less off-road worthy than some "soft road" crossovers like Jeeps, Subarus and the Bronco Sport.

  • @rfjohns1

    Not really. The extreme weight is also a major factor.

  • @jg8263

    @jg8263

    10 ай бұрын

    @@rfjohns1 can't say I fully agree. Yes, a normal f150 crew is about 5k lbs and the electric is 6500 lbs. But if 1500lbs would make an otherwise identical f150 too heavy to off-road, then over landing wouldn't work as a 1500lb gear load out or truck bed camper puts a normal F150 at this same weight. Note that, over landers and off-roaders typically take their stock trucks and put increased suspension and tire sizes, with more aggressive tires, on their vehicles, and if that was done to this truck the results would likely have been far different. So, no, I don't think weight is the exclusive factor here (although it doesn't help) but rather stock ground clearance and highway terrain tires. But for all fairness I do believe the normal f150 has just under an inch more clearance off the lot so would perform slightly better on the same tires as this EV, and either empty or a 1500lb payload.

  • @rfjohns1

    @rfjohns1

    10 ай бұрын

    @@jg8263 Sure, but since the baseline is 1500lbs heavier, you're looking at an extremely heavy vehicle once you fully outfit it for overlanding or anything else. Add in the range penalty and very high cost, then why??

    This can do a lot of truck things. Honestly people talk about these trucks not being able to do real work like towing but they forget that not every tow job is 12,000 pounds cross country. A lightning would probably be fine for a lot of city work towing a generator or other machinery to different job sites since it only needs to go maybe 20 or 30 miles. Yep , and it will be interesting to see how the batteries and range degrade as the years roll on , and if you are someone that is a battler that a car is a big purchase , and buys a vehicle and keeps it until its service life is kaput ( IE ... the car is rooted ) , how are these EVs gonna go long term ? ( i suspect they will be shit ). my last ice car ran like a top its whole life , it had 17 years hard life on it when i decided to park her up , it still had unopened engine ,gearbox and diff and drove and ran like a beauty with only general maintenance , and the only reason i didnt give it a refresh was 17 years of being the family taxi and tow car in the big smoke (AKA suburbia ) , never seeing the inside of a garage and left out in the weather , the body was fairly knackered . I seriously have my doubts about the longevity of a lot of the EV`s . It would be nice to know what a replacement battery is worth for every new EV , people do not think of this stuff , and i`d take a punt most car makers wont be advertising it , and also wont be replacing the batterys unless it meets the accepted degradation rate in the fine print deemed by the company , in other words , they are not just going to give you a free battery easily unless its really stuffed , and if its not a freebie , the owner is going to have to fork out the equal of a deposit on a house for a new EV battery . . Interesting times ahead .

    Aren’t most pickups in the suburbs just used as luxury cars with some utility? 4 wheeling should be left to high short wheel base vehicles. There’s a reason you don’t use a side by side for cross country road trips.

    Please get a Rivian on your course! I was debating between the R1T and Lightning last year and went with the Rivian. While I never drove the Lightning, based on my year with the Rivian, I think it would have no issues with this but…. I would really appreciate your opinion. That being said, I love my R1T and it seems to have way more capability than I have skill.
