ha HA! Back in 2018 I made a video and in that video I said about these issues with the MT range at the time. I have now added this video as a card on that video to show I was not lying! 👍👍

It's from a Tracer 7 not an MT07 ...... the Tracer has an alloy swing arm, the MT has a steel swing arm. The swing arm on my 2018 MT07 started to rust within 6 months from new ... without ever even getting wet!! Quite a few owners in the UK Owners Group made successful warranty claims for replacement swing arms .... unfortunately though the bikes entire frame is just as badly coated 😕

The chain guard was there, I removed it before giving you the swingarm. Can’t believe how bad this part really was, I knew it was damaged, but not this bad😬

This fucking boils my piss. You don’t see corrosion on modern cars yet bikes turn to dust quicker than your gran at the crem. Yes I know bikes are generally more exposed but that’s more reason to improve the paint / coating standards from new. The multi million pound lotions and potions industry must love it as we try to spray their products on our bikes to hopelessly stop this level of corrosion. Cracking vid Matt.

a thing you can use for assembly when you want to not ding the finish is a silicone cooking mat (those you can get for your oven to bake stuff on) its a nice large sheet of rubber that you can put on your table wich A: grips good and B: will save the finish

I had a 2016 MT07 for 2.5yrs from Jan 2020 to June 2022, the bike had just shy of 50k miles on it when I sold it. The engine was absolute gold, I rode that bike all year round throughout ownership, never had a single issue, valves checked at 40k miles, perfectly fine etc. Wouldve happily kept the bike forever but rust was just taking over, Id coat the bike in ACF50 regularly as well but the swingarm was all bubbling and pitting like a mf and the worst part was the tube steel frame itself. The bike felt cheap and nasty in general, fairings and other plastics felt like they were made out of quality street tubs and of course most of the bike was mild steel. The gem of the mid capacity yams are the engines, the MT07 and MT09 engines are insanely good, the perk of the mt09 is it has an aluminium frame but I think it shares the same mild steel swingarm as the MT07 apart from on the SP models

Yes, absolutely. 'Break' all the sharp edges, camfering them. And holes can be given a small countersink to 'break' the edge and a die grinder with a flap wheel used to round the edges. So all the edges are round and smooth, giving any coating much better adhesion. Where the chain has 'nicked' the swing arm, it could be welded and dressed depending how deep the gouge is.

This would be a good time to vapor hone, or sand blast, clean, and prime with either Zinc Chromate, or Strontium Chromate, to keep the corrosion from rearing its ugly head in the future. Aluminum can sometimes be a little tricky, when it comes to adhesion and paint. It really needs to be prepped properly and coated with a good self etching primer, before painting, which the manufacturer neglected in this particular case. Great video, thanks for sharing.

This was mighty interesting to me. Back in 2019, I was considering a MT07. I watched dozens of reviews on the model, and I do mean dozens. A common theme mentioned on many was the visible early onset degradation of the swing arm. So this was a 'follow up' to me, you've shown me I made right decision to NOT buy a new MT07 (or 09) Thanx Matt, nice one. 👍

Great explanations Matt! Jesus Mary Joseph I’ve seen some people bash sockets with a hammer getting bushes out of swingarms. Scary. The 2nd method of removing the bushes & seal was top notch. Supporting the end you were pressing out. Using that method upon installing will be just as much. Would you tack weld the tower so that it doesn’t move or moves as one?

thx Matt 😊 we need more of these type videos. i have 2 small questions, 1) let's say our bearing OD is 30mm. so does Yamaha machine the relevant bore (where the bearing is fitted) to something like 29.95mm ? is there a standard for that interference fit or does it depend on material, bearing size, load etc ? 2) is this swing arm aluminum alloy totally different from the aluminum alloy which is used in engine crankcases ? thx again. keep it up ❤

There are standard fits that are based on bearing type and receiving material. Load doesn't matter. The material is usually the same, it has to have good flow characteristics and weldability.

I have a 2016 model Tracer 700 bought 2018 new. Ride it since then and haven't seen something like this. Maybe because I only ride during summer season without salt on the road eh? lol What I always noticed when I start riding and hitting the break for the first time my ABS module sounds like a dying cat but that never really bothered me. Then I read Yamaha did a recall on that thing. But I have no trouble with the ABS working so... At least the federal motor transport Authority wrote me a letter if I don't do the recall on the two bushings and screws on the plastic chain guard they will decommission my bike until it is fixed LOLOLOLOL

Honestly. I would not press out bearings like that on ally swingarm. Well its just me. I am not the press expert. My take would be like that: Support swingarm like you do. Pass socket extension through the swingarm hole that was on top and try to press out the lower bearing race. I have to much anxiety of squishing/ bending/ craking/ denting aluminium stuff. I know the readings on the press was low. Just saing my apporach when I do not want to F something. Ok now, watched the whole video, you have already mention that :)

I agree pressing "across" the swingarm is not ideal and could potentially damage it if too much force is applied in this way (I'm not saying Matt has caused any damage he knows how much force he is applying). I would have pressed them out through each side with the swingarm supported directly below the hole as you described. Doing it this way also keeps everything nicely aligned and less of a balancing act.

@@dirtygarageguy I thought that because stuff like modern tyres have week and year as a 4 digit number on the side wall. I guess that batch number would be used for however long it takes to make that particular batch of swing arms.

Matt, I posted a comment earlier, but YT seems to have deleted it; probably because it had links. Anyway, the Australian government have a website listing recalls, and there was no record of the MT07 being recalled for scabby swingarms. Note for potential commenters replying to this: yes I know that there may be different issues/faults between the batches sent to Australia and the ones sent to where you live, so telling me wont make you look big and clever. If you do decide to say something stupid, your willy will fall off ! You have been warned.
