Bizarre short about catching wild animals for a Chicago zoo

What I find amazing is how the emotions of Joel and bots changed voer the course of this short. They started out light-heated as usual but by the end you could tell all three were genuinly disgusted and apauled at what they watched. Thank god for the "catching Ross" segment.

100%. They definitely realized this was a bummer about halfway through. I was thinking the exact same thing when Tom said "Boy what I'd give to see mama bear come barreling out of the brush right now" lmao. Sadly, I'm sure he killed their mom shortly before this so he could get the cubs. Just didn't film that, because they knew it was a little too gruesome for TV.

@@Malamba4231 People viewed animals VERY differently back then. Hell, even just in my Grandpa's generation, the common mindset was "Animals are tools for man, they don't have emotions". On both sides of my family, my grandfathers would roll over in their grave at the idea of spending more than $50 at the vet for a pet. "They'll either get better on their own, or I'll put it down with my winchester". Neither of them were poor, its just how they thought, sadly.

As is the audience watching it, especially considering how inhumanely zoo animals were treated back then compared to how they are treated today. In particular, the second bear cub's cries as it's pulled down from the tree were so heartbreaking. I would have paid money to see the mama bear come out at that moment and turn Ross into dinner for her and the cubs. LOL @ 7:23-7:28!

I've watched and rewatched this since it first aired in the 1990s--it remains among the most disturbing things the MST3K crew ever endured... I do not believe this was staged--it would be smoother if it was simply trained animals and professional actors under the supervision of a theatrical director. But, much like modern "Reality TV", I do believe parts of this were orchestrated. Example: I don't think the cubs were trained, but I would be willing to bet mama bear was killed or tranked before filming began. No mother bear would ever leave BOTH her cubs alone long enough for the events of this film to be possible...and I have a hard time believing that the makers of this atrocity just HAPPENED to stumble upon two orphan black bear cubs in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. The REST of the short I could believe occurred precisely as it appears on film.
