I am still deciding between this, the Rog Strix Z690 D4, and the MSI EDGE (Mostly because I like the colorful dragon, lol). I'm leaning towards the Edge, but it would be my first MSI board. No, it's not true. This board has a strong 16 Phase 70Amp VRM for CPU Core. Z690 across the range (apart from the cheapest ASrock) has good VRMs that can handle an i7-12700K no issues and a i9-12900K at stock too. The only time you'd need to consider VRM quality if is you're aiming to push a 12900K as far as it will go!

    Thanks for the review. Given the price difference between the MSI Z690 Tomahawk DDR4 and MSI B660 Tomahawk DDR4 is at time of writing not much, which should I go for when using an Intel 12400F CPU? I understand that the CPU can't be overclocked, and that might imply using the B660 board; but (as the price difference is between the boards is slight), might it not be better to take the MSI Z690 Tomahawk DDR4? For one thing, it offers an upgrade path to K-series processors, and other features, like more M.2 slots.

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yep, if they're that similar and it's a price you can bear to pay, the Z690 is the stronger board. As you say, the option to get a used i7-12700K in a couple of years may be attractive - though a B660 would actually take that CPU fine, except the locked off overclocking.

    Hi, could you kindly provide any hints about why the m.2_2 slot on the edge version of this board doesn't get recognised? The ssd otherwise works elsewhere. The sata ports are also not detecting extra ssds.

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

    All M.2 slots should work on the Z690 Edge. There are no conflicts with M.2 slots or Sata slots. If it's a SATA (not PCIe) M.2 SSD, then it won't work in that slot as it's PCIe only. All SATA ports should work - are drives visible in BIOS? Have you also connected SATA power to them (2 cables to the drive)? Do they just need to be initialized in Windows? When in doubt, try a BIOS update. If you're not seeing drives no matter which socket they're in and when you're sure they're correctly connected, then contact the retailer.

    To those who have this board, are you facing some issues regarding the audio from the ALC4080 chipset? I keep hearing about how this audio chip across all brands of motherboards comes with some known issues - hissing noise in audio out, crackle, pop noises, sudden static (by far the most scary!), muffled output etc. I love everything else about this board, but the issues surrounding this audio codec is particularly worrisome.

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've used the ALC 4080 on 3 Boards now, the Asus Z690 Maximus XIII, this board, and the MSI Z690 Carbon (currently in daily use). I haven't experienced these issues though headphones or speakers via USB, Audio jack or optical connection... I have heard of some boards suffering this but I don't think it's necessarily a problem with the chip itself.

    Nice review though please what are the best DDR4 3600Mhz 32Gb kits for this motherboard, preferably non RGB? Which kits use BDie and are BDie chips the best for Alderlake?

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there! You can check out our video on best DDR4 RAM for Alder lake if you like ;) However if you're in a hurry, the best bang for buck comes from 32GB 3600Mhz Cl16 kits from Crucial (Ballistix) or G.Skill (Ripjws V). There's also some nice Crucial Ballistix Max Kits at 16GB 4000Mhz Cl18, and you could get 2 of those and run 4 sticks - though I can't be 100% certain the Memory controller will do gear 1 at those speeds with 4 sticks. B-die is good on most platforms but it's usually expensive and not really necessary unless your'e going to get deep into overclocking. Hope that helps!

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

    For general use, not much. I have experienced some noise on the ALC897, but that's really because it's normally found on (much) cheaper boards, down around the $100 range, so they're probably not built with the same sound isolation consideration as more expensive options. It's just a shame to see that one budget part on a $220 Motherboard like the MSI Z690-A Pro. It'll likely be fine, for gaming and general use. If you're gonig to buy nice headphones or speakers, I'd get at least an ALC1220 equipped board. Most Z690's have ALC1220 or ALC4080.

    You're better off getting a dedicated sound card if you're running a higher-end amplifier and separates. None of the audio outputs on any of the motherboards including the $700 ones are going to come close to something like an EVGA sound card. The high-end motherboards like the Asus hero are seriously not worth it this time around. This board right here is the one to get. The extra $400 for something like a hero, maybe you get another .1mhz overclock and slightly better stability but is that really worth $400?

    It has 3 temp sensor sources: CPU, 'System' and Chipset. System is normally located somewhat close to the main PCIe Slot, but I'm not sure in this instance and can't find any reference to it in MSI's documents. You can always keep an eye on reported temperatures on that source, and see if it scales appropriately to what you want to control from it.

  • @BuildPicker

    One 8 Pin plug is rated for 235W continuous, which is within the limit for even an i7-12700K. however, to support overclocking (and for marketing) Motherboard manufacturers now include 8+4 or 8+8 connectors on most boards, to double that for nearly 500W capacity. The connectors are directly wired to each other on the board, so one plug works the same as two. I only had one plug in during this review just to get the board up and working for the video. All testing was done with both connected - but it doesn't make a difference.

    That will depend on the case airflow. It reaches about 82C steady state with a D15S, but that is on a test bench. So long as you have good airflow in the case it should be possible to maintain 85C. This board behaves as it should with respect to power limits so it will be the same as anything else.

    Great review of the motherboard. I just got my pc with this motherboard, the intel i7-12700k, g-skill trident cl14 3200mhz ram and asus rtx 3080 oc v2. But when trying to overclock either the cpu or the ram, it won't boot up. Doesn't even boot up if the only thing I do is ramp up the ram from 3200 to 3320 mhz. And I can't neither touch the cpu without having to reset cmos. I have a power supply from Corsair, a 1200W Modular, so can't understand what I am doing wrong. I have clocked alot of ram before I got this pc, but I can't touch the cpu or the ram settings if I want this pc to boot at all. What am I doing wrong? Is there a Bios setting that is preventing me from clocking this computer? Any help at all will help me a lot justifying the price tag of this computer. Thanks in advance.

    That is strage. I had good results overclocking RAM on this motherboard. First, I would Update your BIOS to the most recent version. That can help with RAM Stability. Second, if you increase speeds you may need to loosen timings because whilst 3200MHz Cl14 is XMP, it may be that 3400MHz Cl14 isn't possible (immediately)! But that sounds like Samsung B-Die. It should be happy up to high speeds (but you may need to increase voltage a *small* amount). Follow an overclocking guide - it's too involved for me to take you through here. You can use intel XTU for CPU overclocking, simpler than using BIOS. For RAM overclocking, it's a case of setting and finding a speed that is stable at looser timings, then bringing timings back down to tight but stable levels. Although, 3200Mhz Cl14, you are as fast as 3600Mhz Cl16 anyway, so gains will be minimal unles syou push past that!

  • @jorgenstenersen

    @@BuildPicker I tried increasing ram without XMP timings. No dice. I even tried increasing the dram voltage step by step to a whopping 1,55v before I gave up on the voltage angel. Still no luck. I have the latest bios update, but there is a newer one from MSI that is a beta version and possible unstable according to them. Maybe I should give that one a go. I even tried to have both XMP and CPU gamer mode for cpu disabled, and tried bclk increase. At 101 it didn't boot. It is unreal to experience this when I have clocked my parents dead beat computers ram from 2133 mhz to 3480 mhz, and my ram who sits at 3200 mhz can't be touched. And this on a board who is good for speeds up to 5000. Seems like some sort of lock that forbids every modified settings. I have tried inserting exactly the same settings as others who have had success, but it won't boot even then. Very strange.... 🤔
