The MAG B660M Mortar is a budget motherboard on the LGA1700 socket. It thus belongs to MSI Arsenal Gaming (MAG), the entry-level lineup from the company. The Mortar motherboards are known to be a scaled version of the Pro offerings from MSI. The B660M Mortar is no exception to that trend. But, there is a huge problem with a few more aspects of this thing. The first is the lack of USB 3 headers. I have discussed all of the caveats and why you should look at other B660 boards in detail in the video. So, watch it till the end to check out all of my thoughts.

Hello, I have a question, how to output 5.1 sound through the spdif connector on this motherboard? I have in the settings for some reason only 2.0 sound. In the bios settings, surround sound is enabled, the latest version of realtek control is installed.

Do you have the Realtek Audio Control app installed? If your output device supports 5.1, it should pop up in the app itself.
Will this board work for an i7 processor, RTX 3080 nvidia gpu, and 16 gb ram? Not sure if it will support the GPUs full potential…

The board has a PCIe Gen4 x16 slot. So, it will have no issues in utilising the full potential of an RTX 3080 GPU. Also, if you are using a 12700F, you will be fine with this board. Although it can easily handle a K series Core i7 processor, why buy a B series board with an unlocked chip?

These boards are nearly equivalent. Choose based on your build (whether it'll be ATX or M-ATX).
Bro, this ddr5 version compatible i5-12600KF? if yes, what RAM clock suit this build? Please suggest best fan cooling for this

Yes, it will work with the 12600KF. But you will have to buy compatible DDR5 RAM. Go for anything faster than 4800 MHz. If you are looking for a good cooler for the 12600KF, get the DeepCool AK620 or the LE520. Hope this helps!

You would be fine if you are using a 120mm fan in the front. If you have installed a 140mm second fan, it's not going to work. This motherboard will cause no issues in either scenario!

@@CyberTechTok it comes with a single 140mm fan which will be sandwiched between two heatsinks the other fan is optional with D15s. Is there enough clearance for both ram and cooler to breath and ram sticks being in dual channel configuration? Also, the case will be Corsair 4000D airflow so planning to place one case fan at the back and two at front of the case and NH-D15S with single fan sandwiched between heatsinks. So I just want to know will all this fit together nicely with efficient aircooling? I know am asking too much but I just want to know your opinion. Thanks for the reply though :)

@@JayPandya I am happy to help you, man! Without the second fan, you have 65mm of clearance between the heatsink and the DIMM slot. And, that is enough! The 4000D Airflow is great in what its name promises, so do not give it a second though. But, it is a huge case, so better not put an M-ATX motherboard in there 😅

Go for a solid B660 option. B660 Gaming Plus/ASUS TUF/Tomahawk are some good options

Go for the Asus TUF Gaming B660M Plus D4 and couple it with the Core i5-12400. The MAG B660M Mortar is overpriced, and the Core i5-12500 is not value-for-money.

Yes, it does. MSI calls the +12V RGB header a "JRGB" connector. The B660M Mortar has one JRGB header, called the JRGB1 connector. You can find it in the bottom left corner of the board. The other two JRGB1 and JRGB2 headers are +5V ARGB connectors. Hope this helps 😊

MSI sells a DDR4 version of this board. The model which I reviewed only supports DDR5.

I would not suggest anything above the Core i7 12700 non-K with this board. Although it can run the processor, it will be a tight fit and you will miss out on some features like overclocking. If you are spending so much on the processor, I suggest you look at the Z690 boards.

Yes. It will support Raptor Lake and has PCIe Gen 5. This will ensure all upcoming graphics cards are supported.

Yes, this motherboard is compatible with a 12400F. Also, it is leaps better than an Asus Prime-A D4

The specific version which I reviewed does not. However, MSI sells a DDR4 version of this motherboard separately.

@@hand6425 Yes, theoretically it can support up to a Core i9-12900KS. But, I would not recommend you to pair anything above a Core i7-12700.

Yeah, DDR5 Motherboards are crazy expensive right now, then throw in DDR5 RAM itself and well....basically have to sell a kidney to pay for it. I do like how you have a 5000mhz kit of RAM and still trying to overclock it LOL.
