Most vital part of design is thinking. That was clearly forgot.

did you guys ever get any video on your fastback lid without the big spoiler? I'm wondering if the flow would stay attached without the huge spoiler stagnating that whole area

im surprised how good the rear oem wake is. and the notch back flows alot less than i thought

Cool video. I liked the slow motion. Not sure what you're trying to do with that spoiler though

How much of a difference does it make that the wheels and floor are not moving? Intuitively it would make a pretty big difference since the stagnation point of the flow would probably shift up with a moving floor, and the tire wake and squirt would have significant implications for the aerodynamics. In practice, do you find it makes such a big difference?

Thanks for posting ! Care to share any data ? What was the stock cD, versus modified cD ? Lift and downforce figures ? Great to see the slow mo, and really liked the lack of music as well.

That's so cool being able to see the smoke curl back towards the car after it gets split by the spoiler which I believe helps a bit with fuel economy.

Nope that turbulence creates more drag lol

Toyota engineers IIRC did say it was to reduce drag because the rear shape is actually even worse without it due to more separation due to the steep drop It gives the air somewhere to attach back to and the low pressure over the engine bay isn't really drag because it is isolated rather than pulled along That was the explanation on the original MR2 anyway, it probably applies to a lesser extent to these generation ones, but I've seen the point proven on sedans which also use this trick to float a pocket of air at the rear glass in exchange of then reducing the larger source of drag AKA turbulent flow behind the actual car

Great stuff! What kind of windspeeds to you guys test at? Would love to see a gt wing back there over a huge plexi spoiler.

We are designing a actual wing and hope to go back next year. The spoiler was mainly a cost thing. It's actually an old golf cart windshield we got for free.

This tunnel maxes out at 80 mph. Luckily aerodynamics is pretty scalable so the results can be applied any speed.

It looks like to me that the “fastback” style engine cover works well aerodynamically but hinders the airflow out of the engine bay. Is that what you found?

It's not quite as good as the stock stuff, but I've had no issues with it getting too hot though. Might need more vents on a turbo car though

diddnt like the massive spoiler, id imagine massive amounts of drag with the stagnant air. def the front splitter, maybe hood vent, and id do an autopista rear wing with those extra side scoops to bring in more airflow under the wing

  • @TimMatijow

I do like the look of the autopista, but doesn't have any real angle of attack so it's probably not creating much downforce if any. The stock configuration creates lift in the front and rear. This is designed to make downforce below speeds of 60mph

that's what i tought too! i know their purpose is to slow the air and promote attachment to the surface by creating small swirls of controlled air. is that right?
