MPC Alien Covenant VFX breakdown
Фильм және анимация
MPC’s VFX team lead by VFX Supervisor Ferran Domenech worked alongside Director Ridley Scott and Production VFX Supervisor Charley Henley to create more than 700 stunning shots for the Alien: Covenant. As lead studio, MPC’s work included the creation of the movies terrifying creatures, alien environments, vehicles and complex FX simulation work.

brilliant job. I never noticed the broken trees and other textures were CG. incredibly seamless.

I like to call that invisible CGI
its truly astonishing how far computer graphics has come in the last 30 years, i honestly thought the landscape at 0:26 was real with the spore pods being added in as practical environmental elements
I know a lot of it is supposed to be terrifying, which it is, but it also looks absolutely gorgeous...

Space Tyrell if you didn't see the alien you would have said where is muh alien. This is not Alien, this is Alien:Covenant. The creature is not the same from the 1979 movie.

MrSteo91 what kind of BS it that? in the original we barely had any look at him, he was there only for brief moments. but as Space Tyrell saids most of the fear is from the very of knowing that its outhere but knowing were. he was hiding in the dark striking only moments before he kills someone. in this movie he is just rining around in clear view... NOT SCARY!

Assaf Goldlust this movie is not supposed to be scary. It is supposed to be creepy and make you feel disgusted for what David is doing.
The seamless extensions on the props and backgrounds are very impressive.
Amazing work by MPC. The quality of CGI has come on so much in the last few years. Vast amounts of work though! All those layers on the hybrid alien, all the SSS and specular and reflection maps. Staggering! Totally worth it though, it was a great looking film.
This film is amazing in my opinion! It is one of the best Ridley Scott movies I have seen since "Gladiator" and "Exodus: Gods and Kings".
4:00 my favourite part :)
Excellent job guys!!
the engineers being consumed were 100% cgi, I didn't knew that :O

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Glad to see this video. The film is visually stunning and a wonderful job on the CGI.
beautiful artistry
This is all so amazing, both the environment and Alien. I think the CGI for the Alien is so obvious to us is because the human brain has never seen a real creature as it. The Alien itself in this movie is actually a puppet (with some parts played by a person) that was scanned in 3D for each scene and adjusted. The light diffusion is the real challenge to make it look real, which I think the team did a good job on, its just that... how often does the average human see a creature with such contours and textures in real life?

I don't think it's as simple as it looking fake because we're not used to seeing aliens in real life. The rubber suit neomorph that appears for a few seconds before the CGI one's breakdown is still an alien form we don't see every day and it still looks like a physical object that is really there in front of the actor. Even though you can tell it's not an actual living alien because of how stiff it looks, it looks real. The CGI one is much more "alive" but you can immediately tell that it's not really there, that it's CGI. Don't get me wrong, the soft body physics on its skin, and the way it breathes, and all the SSS and roughness maps are impressive, but it still is missing something to make it look real on a purely technical level. Be it the camera lens simulation of the render, or the motion blur, or the animation itself. Something is missing to make it look as physical and "there" as the rubber suit.

@@BathroomTile that's what he just said in other words) without a reference from real life, it is difficult to depict an Alien that would be read naturally
Damn, this is amazing. Epic breakdown for an epic film.
I cried because of the beauty of this video and the artistry and the craftsmanship and everything.... Goosebumps! Thank you MPC for inspiring me. One day I will visit your office and have a nice cup of coffee with your team and a random conversation!
Absolutely Glorious!!!! Just stunning!!!! Thank you so much for all the hard work!!! I am amazed!
thank you for share this videos!!! moreeee!!!!

Wow they cared every single details. This is awesome!
Incredible work.
Awesome montage ! Amazing work.
flawless work. great studio
The MPC team is absolutely insane in its craftsmanship
Great job for a intense and pretty damn good thrill ride!
Awesome
absolutely amazing guys!
I love your matte painting
Beautiful!
The most impressive was the scene with engineers dying.
Before seeing 4:03 I never realized how far back the protomorph’s legs went back giving it even more of a really insectoid/alien feel this time around. That’s something I feel many of the previous films were unable to do with the limited technology available at the time. I honestly think if Ridley Scott could’ve animated and had the alien look and move this way for the first movie he probably would’ve. It added another layer of it feeling more “other-worldly” IMO. There was even a deleted scene from the first movie of the alien doing a weird “crabwalk” that I’m sure was deleted because it just didn’t work. This is probably more of what he had in mind.

Kind of looks like the alien from alien 3
AWESOME BREAKDOWN
That practical Neomorph looked far more convincing and real than the CGI model, due to the fact that the practical effect was in the scene.
Amazing
AWESOME!
The bit that actually made me shiver was when the Protomorph made that chittering noise with its teeth and then headbutted the window. The Xenomorph always looked pissed off and it amazed me how they made it looked absolutely furious. How the hell do you take an already pissed off creature and make it even more angry?!
4:02 Impressive! You should have included more shots of the Neomorph and Xenomorph, anyway excellent job. Congratulations!
Just, amazing movie !!
Awesome.
wow. great stuff.
Brillient
Superb job on the Neomorph! I really loved that thing. The Backgrounds were solid in my opinion. I enjoyed the contrasting human and alien elements in both categories. My only gripe would be with the xenomorph (more with your Technical Director and creature animators than with you folks) which could have been done much better with more time and attention to what makes the xeno so scary. Here is a breakdown: 1) You can design the back tubes so that they are erect with internal fluid pressure and flaccid with evacuating of said pressure. Or, skin cells that lock bonds when in standard erect posture for alien venting/atmosphere adaptation (whatever the heck they do) and then release bonds to fall flaccid along its body when entering tight spaces, etc. It seems like this might have been the thought behind the alien entering a vertical connector to a lower level corridor (when it climbs down the ladder). However, it reads horribly frankly. I think it was too quick and the hind tubes appear to "disappear" looking like a videogame glitch. 2) The movements of the xenomorph look like your animation team spent too much time studying terrestrial animals such as dogs and cats. It diminished the alien creepiness a thousandfold. In the camera scene where the alien is on ship-camera trapped behind doors, I would have introduced the 'Alien's (1979)' - original movement idea of the xeno stalking in bipedal stance then upon reaching the door, have it quickly spread out its lanky arms to reach upward on the walls bringing its towering form and mechanical feet up to follow suit and then have it crawling upside down whence it came to find another entrance/exit. You could have the tail lash from side to side threateningly as it perceives itself being trapped/restricted. Maybe even just have it stop in the top of the intersecting tunnels and flatten itself out like a spider (sometimes little to no movement at all is scarier and more predator-like). Other than these personal gripes I loved the overall FX work. Cheers!
Holy Cow! that 700 stunning shot, is that matte painting?
This an amazing movie. 😍
Amazing
This is amazing work, just wish they had mixed in a bit more practical effects like an Alien suit.
SO COOL.....

Great video. #AlienCovenant
good stuff
Everything is incredible, guys, really incredible! Amazing work! But the only thing that confused me after watching the movie: in the bombing sequence, with every picture change (or frame change), there is a different angle of shadows from the sun (and sometimes there isn't any at all). I watched this sequence again and again, it's just terrific and mesmerising, but those shadows ruined the impression (for the tiniest bit, I must add).
The original alien still holds up. Practical
1:08 that just scared the hell outta me. Isn't that the costume without the 3d effects over it? Edit: 4:03 xenomorph looks scary in that posturing.
art
the movie wasnt great but idk why people hated the cgi so much. it really is A+ quality.
Wish I had that Xenomorph and Necromorph in Wavefront OBJ form. Making a Xenomorph in ZBrush currently and it's hard to give it that right look.
Genius
nice composites and models, because the Alien had been done so well in real life in the past films we as viewers really notice the cgi in this film which was a shame but every thing else was great.
Alien Caos-venant make Prometheus look like a masterpiece.
What is this cool music from?
Some great CGI stuff, nice to watch. But i had a feeling there was something wrong with Alien movements and this clean look. Next time hope it's not gonna be for Ridely, and CGI for ships and environments only
Seeing as you work with Ridley Scott, any hints about the next movie?
@gonzomuse

He did an interview hinting that some engineers return to their planet and aren't terribly happy with what they find! Understatement there, I'm guessing. I hope it's at least as good as Covenant.

If I learn the entire Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud, Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya, Maxon Cinema 4D, Pixologic Zbrush, Sidefx Houdini, and if I learn creative skills that involve sketching, illustrating, rendering, modeling, drawing, conceptualized drawing, painting, concepting, designing, graphic designing, (and all this through video courses and training courses by Lynda.com, Udemy,. Pluralsight, Gnomon Workshop, Digital Tutors, Kelby Training, Infinite Skills, et al) will I be able to land myself a job at MPC? Surely, I will create an online portfolio before I apply.

Everything looked great, the only thing that was a little off for me was the Alien movements but I understand it was a stylized choose of choppy movements.
Where is this music from?
Question to someone whos involved in 3d - at 0:30 we see huge cuted tree branch with markers on it (bluescreen behind) and at 0:31(in shoot AFTER) MPC replaced cuted original foam (?) model to 3d model instead. So whats the purpose of using those real models in scene at 0:30 before cgi? could they just put some cardboard in there instead? Can someone explain me that ?

My take (can be either, a combination, or none): - Helps the talent get in the mood. - Helps the talent get consistently shaded. - They might have tried extending them first, but found it didn’t look as good as replacing them completely (eg. matchmove jitter). - Artistic choice. - Producers not understanding the real trees are meant to be extended and saying ‘that cut is too harsh, replace them completely’.

So that the actors can interact with the object. You can see a good example of how we use foam tree shapes on set and replace them digitally in our "MPC The Jungle Book VFX breakdown"

Anyone know the song?
Name of music?
At 1:14 is that a real person at the bottom right?

Why they made it CG? The original Alien was also non computer-generated
So why do the xenomorph’s teeth chatter?

Great, but too fast! You have to pause the video to see the bits and pieces, just slow this down by a half so one can take a good look at all the layers coming together.
