Mozart: Dalla sua pace | Don Giovanni • Matthew Rose Masterclass • BPYAP • Snape Maltings

Музыка

Matthew Rose works with Josh Lovell (Don Ottavio - tenor) and Michael Leach (piano) on emphasising Italianate vowels and language, an exercise in singing facing the wall to practice structure and to practice introspection - 'the only person you are telling is yourself.'
Filmed at Aldeburgh Festival 2018, as part of a series of masterclasses on the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme with John Fisher, Julia Faulkner and Matthew Rose.

The student has a warm and beautiful lyric tenor voice and could easily sing Don Ottavio. His first attempt was much better than the corrected one because after the correction he loses legato and sings louder, in other words loses good things that he archieved. The aria is beautiful, soft and gentle. It needs to be calm, and the key to do this is italian technique.

The voice is only a vehicle, not an end in itself. Singers of the past knew this, today it is often forgotten.

JOSH: Listen to the Luigi Alva version... caress the aria... you have the voice and technique... take it down a notch and add more color and feeling... Ottavio is rhapsodizing about his GF.

Beautiful pianissimo! Very well done (the voice is very nice), but I'm left wondering why I'm not as moved by this performance as by those of others -- Fritz Wunderlich, Leopold Simoneau, e.g. but of course they both raised the bar to a level that's difficult for others to attain.

It is a sacrilege to put this guy and Wunderlich or even Simoneau for that matter in the same sentence. This guy has zero depth and very bad technique. He is another Juan Diego Florez but worst. Nasal and constricted. Problem with today's singers is that they want to sing opera with totally undeveloped voices. He shoud go back to scales and songs and learn to sing properly with chest voice and discard the whole singing in mask crap. He would perhaps become a decent leggiero tenor then.

well, despite the general misunderstanding of bel canto I think it's great that the voice sound somewhat freer and louder just after concentrating on proper vowel production still... what can you do in a 15 min. masterclass when the singer even talks in a weird and annoying falsetto voice...

Mosquito tenor. Nasal and constricted. He should learn to sing properly and perhaps could become a decent leggiero tenor. This guy will get destroyed by the orchestra in a live perforrmance unless amplified.

@@Bumblebeebeebee Yes, by calling out bad teachers and bad technique, we want to give the young singers a chance to revise their singing, in hope of them singing in a way that is audible on stage and that can give them a career for many, many years. Trying to "be nice" and patting people on the shoulder is the death of opera. Opera is the Olympics of singing, and if you can't take critique or are constantly willing to learn new things, you will never make it.

Well clearly the fact Josh is engaged all over definitely means he’s been destroyed by orchestras every where. Guess we’ll need to call Wiener Stattsoper to figure out why they keep engaging him in leading parts. You would think the Vienna Philharmonic must be so tired of destroying him.
