Moving to Austin! My Initial Thoughts | Austin, Texas

Hello, world!
Yup, this is me, and these are my first impressions of Austin.
So far, the city's been treating me well! I highly recommend a visit for anyone looking to plan their next trip or soon-to-be college graduates looking for a new place to call home.
Please note, these are just MY views - I don't speak for all Austinites, native or otherwise. Also, these were just my first impressions of the city, so I'm sure they'll change and I'll learn more the longer I live here. Maybe I'll even do an update video once I've lived here for a year!
I hope y'all enjoy this video (wow so Southern). I'm new to the KZread family, but if you want to see more from me, feel free to subscribe and hit the bell to be notified when I post! Thanks for livin' la vida Lisa with me :)

    @@saraj2429 It would. I have a friend who started a tree trimming business in 2013 with one chainsaw. Now 6 years later, he has two boom trucks, a contract crew and has been really successful. With the rainy winters and humid springs, the grass keeps growing even in off season. Austin (even thought some of the regulations are stifling these days), is still a great place for entrepreneurs.

    I'm nine years in here, I'll tell you what's up. I drive Uber/Lyft and delivered food before that, I know the city and traffic and people. I photograph food and I talk to all my passengers, I know the food scene. #1 It's hot. Yes it is, in the summer, and getting hotter. I predict a hotter summer in 2020 than before when it was 105/108 for days straight. It is not Phoenix hot though, and it is not Louisiana humid. Expect some good heat, and some sticky days. However, we had a very mild winter (did it even freeze?) and Spring and Fall are amazing. #2 Things to do. Yeah, mostly. Some folks will say it's boring, but it's the Live Music Capital of the World, there's lots of Nature to explore, so many bars and restaurants, and. museum and theater or two. From here, go explore other Texas stuff. #3 Austin IS a college town. Not just UT (Hook 'em Horns!) but Concordia, St.Edward's, and several others with Texas State just south in San Marcos and of course the Aggies a couple hours away. The effect is, when school is out you really notice the lack of people. Can be good for traffic, can be bad for business (mine). UT alone has 51k students. #4 Austin is still a little big town. Traffic is a thing. Sure, it's a matter of perspective, but it can take an hour and a half to go from north to south Austin. You really want to live close to work if you can. Don't move to Buda and work in Round Rock is what I'm saying. The infrastructure has a lot of catching up to do and I'm sorry, but Austin is not good at building roads. #5 People ARE nice. It is Southern Hospitality and also realizing we're all in this mess together. When people say don't move here and contribute to the traffic, part of what they're saying is don't bring your snobbish, rude, lack of manners with you. It's "yes sir and no ma'am" and hold the door for anyone that's four steps behind you. Definitely let cars in. Stop tailgating and speeding! #6 Embrace the bugs. There's way less than there used to be, humans are wiping them out. June Bugs are harmless. I never see scorpions. I do hate mosquitoes but they're not bad. If you have roaches, that's cheap management. Get a cat. However, there are deer, lots of deer, watch out at dusk! We also have foxes, armadillos, possums, and skunks, all IN town. I've heard about cougars too, haven't seen one, but all the rest. #7 Pronouncing things weird is part of being an Austinite. They just changed all the signs from Manchaca to Menchaca (seriously), look him up. It's still pronounced Man-Chek. And Guad-A-Loop is also The Drag, or The Guad, at least through campus. #8 Food is off the hook. Sure, wait for hours for Franklin BBQ, or go to Terry Black's. Or a dozen others I can name off the top of my head, from The Salt Lick to County Line to Iron Works to Rollin' Smoke to Black's (ya see what I mean). Uchi Sushi, Home Slice Pizza, Odd Duck, Chuy's Tex-Mex, Matt's El Rancho, El Alma Mexican; I mean the list goes on and on. Torchy's is where the tourists go. Try Veracruz or Valentina's and the ever changing list. Some of the best food here is out of a food truck. That includes everything from South American to Middle Eastern to Ethiopian and yes vegetarian and vegan. Ok now I'm hungry, I'm out. And of course, Don't Move Here! ;-)

    I’m back in chicago looking to back to Austin , YES ITS HOT, I worked at the airport before I quite depressed to having to pay out of pocket high priced heath insurance. Texas is beautiful, you don’t have to leaveTexas for vacation , if you stay in Austin it’s great because you can go North or south or west for 2-3 hrs and your in another great city or Gulf of Mexico , Padre Island , Rents are high and it’s gotten pretty pricey, ONE MORE THI G TRAFFIC SUCKS and now it’s Got worst. Chicago traffic is better then Austin. Because you can’t just get off the highway in Austin and take diff route.not a highway type of city, unless you leave at night.

    Hector Aragon yes i’ve been here since end of august. it’s definitely very, very different than chicago. but the winter was so nice & mostly mild. to be honest covid has made it really tough for me to enjoy it here but that mostly has to do with not being able to work for almost 3 months cuz of the lockdown & not having friends here before i moved. the political climate is liberal but nothing like chicago & i mention that because it has a lot to do with how the city as a whole handles current social issues. but maybe i would feel differently had i had time to make more friends & build more of a community here - maybe i would feel safer. i wish i had more positive things to say! but i just want to be honest. had i known all this was going to happen i would have stayed in chicago.

    Hector Aragon cost of living is similar to chicago, maybe a little bit more actually. which i am actually a little surprised by because 😬 i don’t think things are as nice as chicago. sorry again for the honesty! & these are just my opinions of course. more apartments are small units in huuuuuge complexes that range from shabby to nicely built & modern, but rent is kind of high for what you get. plus it seems like most complexes tack on an EXTRA $50-75 to your rent in bullshit fees! there are a ton of homeless folks & i’m not used to seeing so many cuz in chicago i think most folks stayed inside in shelters. here they stay outside on roads, by highways, parking lots, everywhere. i am not complaining - i can’t imagine having to go thru such hard times myself, & it’s not that i don’t think homeless folks should be tucked out of the way or anything like that. it’s just very shocking to see & makes me wonder what programs the city has in place, if any, to assist these folks in need. since covid it seems like the number of tents & people have doubled, if not tripled. sounds like an over-exaggeration but that’s what it seems like to me.

    Thanks for your question! Compared to other cities in the U.S., Austin has a decent cost of living (way lower than New York, San Francisco, Chicago, etc.) - it's 3% lower than the national average. BUT prices are slowly increasing over time because big companies like Apple and Google are opening locations in Austin, so more people will be moving to the city and prices will go up. For right now, I'd say you can get by just fine with an apartment

  • @christianbrother4724

    @christianbrother4724

    5 жыл бұрын

    the only difference is that LA and Dallas prepared for it. They built multi lane highways and roads. In Austin, for example there is one way in or out..North to South. That is I35. Through downtown, the highway has not been updated since the mid 1960s, that is when the city only had under 200,000 people. Fast forward to today, within the city, the roads are the same, however the population is almost at a million. Everywhere you go is complete gridlock, plus the traffic lights are not sycronized so nothing moves. There are no crosstown expressways to jump on to get out of it. For a mid sized city it is horrible. The liberals have had a "no infrastructure" no growth policy since the 80s. That is do not improve roads or build highways because people will still use cars. So they have not prepared for anything. The current infrastructure cannot support the population we have now.

    It's not meant to be as informed, as there's no way I could know everything there is to know about Austin, only having lived here for a year. I intended it to be a new, out-of-state perspective. There are plenty of videos made by native residents, but this wasn't one! Thanks for your feedback :)
