This is one of the best explanations of this problem that I've seen. Super useful stuff right here! The basic concept applies across all engines including Jeeps...not that would know anything about vacuum leaks in a Jeep...you have to have vacuum lines to have a leak, right? Mine were shredded before I sold that thing...no lines, no leaks...simple logic.

That logic works for me! I'm just gonna plug up all the places that have vacuum lines so there will never be a leak again ;-)

Had a hose fall off during my ride today. Glad i had watched your video a couple days before this. Walked the bike home and put the hose back in its place. Jumpstarted the bike because my battery died from my attempts at starting with a massive vaccum leak. Bike started right back up after a jump. Hoping that was the only issue and i can ride with a peace of mind again

My Ninja 250 is doing this but also revs high with the choke on and the tach is reading 8-9k while idling. I've cursed the previous owner trying to figure it out.

​@@saltyshellback I've tried a lot, short of pulling the carbs. The bike seems to run better when I leave a charger on the battery, but the tach is still freaking out and it can't find a stable idle.

Mine only hangs in between shifts on low throttle. If accelerating harder it hangs less

@@saltyshellback i tried spraying the boots (from air filter to carb and from carb to intake), no increase in rpm to suggest an air leak there :(

Use carb cleaner and spray around the carb while the bike is running. If the engine revs up, that is possibly where there is an air leak. Usually the leak is on the engine side of the carb.

If it's a carbureted, that means your choke is stuck open. If it's fuel injected, could mean something is wrong with the electric control unit (ECU). What year and model is your bike?

Ooorrr it's to lean and as it gets warmer it leans out and goes higher ....aftermarket exhaust will affect stock settings tooo

It is on the engine side of one of the carbs. It is usually hooked into the petcock.

Im running a set of china carbs on my ninja 250 and cant figure it out. It dies if i floor it, bogs at idle and, slowly comes down after getting it up in the rpm range.

And I don't think there are any vacuum leaks. Idle mixture set to 3.5 turns, and flooring it off idle, hesitates/slowly increases rpm before it picks up. Any ideas?

First recommendation is to check for vacuum leaks. Spray carb cleaner around the engine side of the carbs while it is running and if the rpms change while you are spraying around the carbs, then you have a vacuum leak. Have you bench synced the carbs? You may also need to adjust the fuel-air mixture screw on the bottom of the carbs. I recommend getting a carbtune tool to sync the carbs.

@@saltyshellback I sprayed starting fluid all around and didn't notice a change in rpm. And the carbs are brand new so I assume the butterfly valves are synced. They looked good. One thing I noticed, the right cylinder spark plug looked fine, but the left one was black and wet. Plugs are new. That might be an indicator

@@polaris_extremis Yeah, the black plug means it's running rich. You may have to adjust the fuel-air screw on that carb. I am guessing you have verified the plug gap. I set my gaps to 0.030".
