Motor Upgrade to Golf Cart Part 1

Working on finishing some upgrades to the golf cart. Motor swap from stock to D&D Motors and Alltrax controller. will give us more speed and torque for working around the property. Went with a club car because it has an all aluminum frame.

Hey. Sorry very random but been driving me crazy. Was driving my golf cart up a steep hill and it gave out on me. There was a burning smell when that happened. Been dead ever since. Do you think I killed the motor? Thanks in advance!

I'm not an expert but that's a difficult one to diagnose. Could be the motor, the controller, the batteries, the solenoid, or the wiring. So check the water levels in your batteries most need to be filled over time with distilled water just above the plates. Check voltage of the batteries. If you upgraded the controller/ motor did you make sure your cable thickness (AWG) was right, they often times need to be replaced especially if you changed the voltage output of the batteries. Next, a lot of controllers have an indication light on them. See if the light is on or use a multi meter to verify proper voltage is making it to the controller. Then with cart off no pedal pushed check the voltage going to the big primary terminals on the solenoid. Lot of people have detailed instructions on KZread. My guess is battery, solenoid, or controller. But could be wires or motor.

Hey thanks for the response and help! Turns out the motor brush was shot. Not as an expensive fix as I thought it would be. Thanks again!

I'm by no means an expert and haven't ran into that issue myself yet. However, if lights are turning on you could look at how they are wired, some people only wire them back to a single battery. I'd unhook each battery and test them separately with a multimeter to make sure they are all good / providing power. If batteries are good then I'd reconnect them and check power to the controller, see if the controller is getting power and if so there's usually (not always) an indicator light to let you know if it is powering on. Rain might have fried the controller.

Sometimes there are also inline fuses that might have blown, or in some club cars there's a motor reset button near the tow / run switch.

Thanks brother. Turned out connection to batteries were filthy 🔋. Did what you said and unhooked them, cleaned them and good as new. Thanks again
