Thank you Phil! Over 40 years ago I loved to turn wood in high school and still have those pieces today. I had won many awards in state competition but never kept up once I graduated. As I turn to retirement soon I have rediscovered an old smoldering ember of desire still in me. Your videos have inspired me to recapture those times of old. My daughter heads of to college next summer. I intend to convert that side of the garage to a wood shop. In particular dedicated space for a lathe. I don’t know how it will turn out but I know it will be rewarding. Hopefully, over time I can impress myself enough to send you a picture. Thank you so much for your time, explanation, and inspiration to me and many others!!!

I have to agree with you Phil regarding this Cherry Plum that Tuffy seems to take great delight in sending you. Every seems to give you a lift just by its sheer presence & every piece that I have seen has been an absolute delight to look at after it has been through your hands. Brilliant explanation as you audibly work your way through a piece, it makes me feel that I am right there with you & also the explanation of the shellac based sanding sealer as opposed to the finishing shellac used. As I said, I have watched many of your Cherry Plum turnings but this one is an absolute knockout. You brighten my days mate. Stay safe in these times, Don

From the first piece of this Cherry Plum, I was hooked, Don. Every piece turns out beautiful. Great tight bark and beautiful color and grain. I just love it!
Thanks for the shout-out, Phil. When I shear “cut” I drop my handle much lower to bring the cutting edge to a nearly vertical orientation. If I get it too close to vertical, of course, it just cuts a deep line. When “scraping” the cutting edge is almost horizontal. I’m not sure if I’m explaining it very well. Let me know if you want me to try to do a better job of explaining it in a video! Stay safe and healthy, my friend. 😷😷😷 Happy turning, .....Gord

Thank You Phil...That Cherry Plum is always pretty ruff by the time I get to it. The trees are always dead with the punky-ness rotting out the beauty of the wood. Timing is so very important to max the beauty and minimize the rot. Phil you are an old hand at that Cherry Plum. You know how to approach it and I always enjoy and learn from your turning...TM

@@jefflawson7543 Hi Jeff, The wood is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittosporum_tenuifolium It is popular in my area as a wind/visual barrier. Hard wood and semi- straight at times. If not straight I slide the cleaned stick into a piece of electrical conduit pipe and put on the roof to bake. Any crooked hard wood would work after all that hot baking...TM

Hi Phil I am currently with the majority of Britain in imposed social isolation due to the trouble the world is suffering. Tuffy's walking stick is a thing of beauty, thou i note you didn't reveal your age, I am 70 and have a couple of health issues that mean I have to stay away from people at the moment. Your turning video's have always been good fun and informative to watch, but under the current situation have become something to look forward to. Tuffy must be a good friend to you, given he sends you such interesting and challenging pieces of wood to turn. He must be a god send to you. Another beautiful bowl, thanks for the videos, Stay safe and look after yourself, best wishes to you and your lady. Tony

Agreed, Mark, Tuffy has created a thing of beauty! He's like that. I tried to get a close-up of the coin so you could see the year on it, which is 1947, so I've got you by a few. I too am staying home, keeping safe, and that's OK. I'm fortunate to have something to keep me busy during this very strange time we are living in. Also fortunate to have Tuffy and other generous viewers in the audience so keep us all entertained with their variety of wood offerings. I consider myself very blessed! Stay healthy, Mark! Phil

I’ve watched many of your KZreads recently and some pieces I love more than others, but there hasn’t been a single piece that hasn’t been gorgeous and your skill really is in bringing out the intrinsic beauty of the wood. I heard you say in one video about resin and that you aren’t that guy, and I agree, your pieces never need resin, they’re stunning, considered works of art combining the majesty of nature and the lightest touch of a thoughtful craftsman.

Another good informative video showing nature at its best. What was also good for me was to see the tear out at the punky areas, both with the bowl gouge and the scraper. It was 'good' cos its happened to me and I tried various things to little or no effect. Even sanding does not obtain the same surface finish. I'm beginning to understand/accept that's just how it is! The grain where it's punky is course and sometimes softer than the surrounding area. It's just a matter of doing the best you can and accepting 'imperfection' as part of the attraction of the piece. Sorry if that's all obvious, but its taken me awhile to move from frustration to acceptance. A really good turner helped me when he said that not one of his pieces (and they are finished to 'perfection') is ever perfect!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
4 жыл бұрын
You are right, Ray. Sometimes you just have to accept that which you cannot change. I find that applying shellac will seal and harden the punky grain. It will still look a little different and may have a slight texture to it but it won't get any worse. Works for me! Phil

Thank you, Will! It's pretty wood, for sure! Phil
Shear scraping is when the tool is horizontal, shear cutting is when the end of the tool is dropped down on your body and the cutting edge is on a steep angle upward !!!

While I don't question your terminology I do curiously find when shear scraping by your definition I'm often cutting curls and never the converse.
