Most Electrolyte Powders Are Missing This Critical Nutrient (But Cost More)

Many popular electrolytes cost more than $40 per month but don't offer much in terms of minerals outside of salt and are devoid of creatine.

    Thanks for all you do! I want to say that I have tried your electrolyte mix and it is truly one of the best products out there! You did accidentally inspire me to concoct my own recipe for an electrolyte drink. The recipe is: 8 oz filtered water 2 turns of a sea salt grinder 1/2 lemon squeezed juice 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar 5g glycine powder 5g creatine powder 1g potassium gluconate powder 1g Magnesium (magnesium lysinate glycinate chelate) powder I haven't figured out the exact cost of this per serving, but I imagine it's more than the MYOXCIENCE ones. This recipe takes a bit of prep and shopping which is the slight downside to having a ready to go pack like your product.

    1) The element sodium (Na+) is the very same whether in ancient (vs. "recent?") "salt" regardless of origin, i.e. ocean vs Morton's table salt. The essential difference between "ancient ocean" (or "Himalayan" salt, e.g) vs. commercial table salt is the presence (ocean/Himalayan) or absence (table) of other elements - which are always ASSUMED to be beneficial and in proper amounts. 2) If one's sodium intake is from "salt" (i.e. sodium chloride) then the intake of 1000mg of "sodium" (second column, "popular electrolytes") MUST also contain 1500mg of chloride, NOT zero as erroneously stated.

    1000% agree. This needs to go Viral ! Sodium / potassium / magnesium "Balance" very important. Sodium is cheap and easy from good quality salt we place on the food, doesn't need to be high in our electrolyte drinks, not do we want it high in the electrolyte drinks. Yes, many of the high fat or high protein diets missing Calcium. Yes, Creatine not just athletes but also for Grandma and cognitive support. Unfortunately, we live in a world of "marketing". Some other brands have become famous but not the best option. Similar to McDonalds, marketing and big sales, but not the best quality meat.

    Your body doesn't know from fancy salt. But for at least 30 years, WHO has published a rehydration mix formula, often mixed in the field for dysentery victims and other serious issues. Right now the only question is how much sugar is or isn't needed to get it absorbed quickly. Creatine? Proteins? Have their purposes, but that's not the task of electrolyte hydration mixes. And the WHO mix is also dirt cheap. Ten bucks will make somerhing like 100 gallons, all from supermarket products.

  • @fumbelstiltskin4250

    @fumbelstiltskin4250

    Will take a stab at this... First, most electrolyte products are designed as a supplement -- as such, it isn't meant to provide 100% of a particular ingredient's RDA. A seller of such has to expect that you are getting additional amounts from your daily food consumption, as well as from other vitamins, supplements, prescription medications, etc. More importantly, having too much potassium in your blood can be dangerous. Potassium affects the way your heart muscle works. When you have too much potassium, your heart may beat irregularly, which in the worst cases can cause heart attack. Also keep in mind that everyone's metabolism is different. Some people have undiagnosed impaired kidney function, which increases the chance of sodium/potassium imbalance. It's always a good idea to check with your primary care physician before starting any supplement (including discussion of whether baseline and periodic bloodwork is recommended).

    @@defeqel6537 modern greens are lower in all micronutrients compared to even just 100 years ago due to industrial Ag that relies on petroleum based inputs. Basically we ruined our soil with factory farming methods. That's one reason why 10g seems so unobtainable today. Another reason is we started eating lower quality cuts of meat that have been bled off of all their liquids and we don't consume the blood as blood sausage or blood pudding anymore, and we don't recapture the liquids lost during cooking by deglazing the pan and making gravies and sauces anymore. Potassium is an obligate component of muscle tissue, so animal products are actually quite high in potassium if you don't waste the juices.

    @@fallingleaveskungfu There is about 1mg of potassium in 1g of blood, you'd need to consume 10 liters to get 10g of potassium. I just don't believe that 10g / day claim. There is more potassium in meat as I've said in my other comment, but it's only about 4-5 times as much, so would still need to consume ~2.5kg /day, and this is from cows who are given electrolyte blocks to lick, e.g. wild moose don't have any more than that.
