Most Dangerous Ways to School - Brazil
Most Dangerous Ways To School - Nicaragua: • Most Dangerous Ways To...
In the Amazonas region of Brazil, education is a sought-after asset. To get it, children must constantly overcome an array of different challenges. It is a journey across lakes and rivers, just for one goal: School. Because this is their chance to break out of poverty and create a better life. For this, they subject themselves to a daily dose of danger. Like the ten-year-old Alice, her sister and the other schoolchildren.
Some of them must walk through the rain forest in the Amazonas region, the most biodiverse region in the world. Others need to paddle eight kilometers twice a day to get to school and back home. The Rio Negro River is the greatest challenge of all. It is the second-largest tributary in the world. And in some places, up to twenty-seven kilometres wide.
The children have to face high waves, harsh weather conditions and crocodiles in the water. While only a water canister on the back end of the canoe serves as a counterweight, and keeps the canoe balanced.
In order to get closer to their wishes and dreams, each day these children carry not only a backpack, but also the fear - on one of the world’s most dangerous ways to school.

That was even more heart breaking when he was explaining how he doesn’t know his subjects and is basically behind. He is so motivated that even in the rain being soaked and traveling long distances he STILL STANDS AGAINST EVERY HURDLE AND OBSTACLE. I wish he had family that lived closer to the school so that he could at least not have to do the strenuous journey to and from.

Loved this video. The crazy thing is how so many of us in western societies take education for granted, and complain about homework, and having to walk 5 minutes to school these kids literally go on a life-and-death journey every time they step foot to get to class and they never complain about it. Talk about a different perspective.

It is strongly, that children have motivation and desire to study, and they are ready to go every day through a lot of dangers. I admire them! Watching this from one of the most developed cities in Africa i.e. Cape Town (with its own unique challenges), I am encouraged to take my own studies a bit more seriously. I grew up in Cameroon and school was just 10 minutes away and I later didn't take my university studies too seriously until in my late 20s. I am 31 and worked real hard to get my Master of Arts degree last March. While I didn't have to experience such hardship getting to school, I am encouraged especially by that one kid who takes his own canoe by himself and immediately starts his homework after all the rowing. I will plan to get my PhD in the next 4 years.

So crazy to see how others do daily life. It is odd that living in an area with that much water and so many rivers that they can't swim. Seems like that would be a staple for life. An old neighbor of mine has told me when he was a kid in Mexico he had to travel many miles to get to school, he would leave early enough to ensure he was there an hour before school started, when he got there the principal would let him sleep for an hour until school started. He has always said without that hour of rest he would never have made it through school....

22:25 reminds me of when I used to go to primary school (in Jamaica), I had to walk, and I used to pick different fruits on my way to and from school. Those were the best days! but I have anxiety watching this, I feel for these kids and wish I could help in some way.
