Most Common Mod 2 Mistakes [18. Pedestrian crossings]

A guide to common mistakes at pedestrian crossings for the DAS motorcycle module 2 test.
Passing your DAS DVSA motorcycle module 1 test & module 2 test can be a challenge, as there's so many road safety and machine control procedures to remember when learning to ride a motorbike. Take your time to practise the new skills you learn whilst on your motorcycle lessons.
The new highway code rules regarding pedestrians at junctions will be covered in a separate video.

Hi Leanna, I have no words to thank you for your vlogs on Mod 2 mistakes. I passed my mod 2 today. As my trainer was so rubbish ( shouting on the radio for not hitting national speed limit on country roads just before my test and put me under immense pressure) I kept your training points in mind during my test and passed with just 1 minor. Please do keep posting your tutorials. Thanks a lot once again. ❤️❤️❤️

The reason I press the button but then cross early is if the traffic seems busy so I press the button, but then theres a big clearing all of a sudden so rather than just stand there, I may as well go haha

Of course. I would do the same. My gripe is with people who press it when there is very little traffic about 😊

As a car and bike driver, when Im a pedestrian I really have very little faith in zebra crossings. Ive pretty much given up even attempting to use them after so many cars refusing to stop on different occasions.😂

I know you like a factoid Leanna. I was often asked by pupils the reason for the name 'pelican' crossing. As I'm old enough to remember the original TV info films (sadly missed), it's a sort of acronym. PE destrian LI ght CON trolled crossing, they just changed the O for an A. Not sure about Toucan, but 'two can' cross (cyclists/pedestrians) seems to be used in the industry.

Last week I failed mod 2 for not giving way to a pedestrian crossing from the other side of the road, exactly the situation at 5:47 in this video, it was not on a junction nor a designated crossing, examiner just said it's the Highway Code, I wonder this could be clarified so I am clear next time, thanks

  • @motorcyclelessonsuk

Hi, that's a bit unfortunate 😔. Our examiners suggest you think of these instances like a zebra crossing but bear in mind if it isn't safe to stop especially when turning off a main road into a side road, so long as the pedestrian hasn't stepped out onto the road it is more sensible NOT to stop. That said, if the pedestrian is about to or has already started to cross, if you don't stop and they are committed you're more likely to fail or gain a fault for it depending on the circumstances at hand. It's not an easy one to give you a clear black and white answer on I'm afraid. I suspect your pedestrian had committed to cross and then you failed to stop. The highway code does give those pedestrians priority which is probably why it was marked as a fail. Better luck next time.

If a pedestrian uses a beg button to cross a road but crosses safely before the lights change, surely it's the lights that are annoying. Some of these are set up in timed sequence with other lights and take 2-3 minutes to change. Annoying pedestrians are the ones who wear headphones and cross without looking.

Sorry about that. I've tried all sorts to improve it, new microphones, mufflers, editing etc. Not much more I can do I'm afraid 😬. Haven't had anyone complain for a while now though so thought I'd sorted it. Thanks for letting me know.
