Mosquito Lagoon Recon Run in the Gheenoe - Trying To Find Fish - 7/7/17

Спорт

Well finally got the Gheenoe out on the Mosquito Lagoon today. We left WAY too late and stayed out WAY too long. I figured I wouldn't get onto any fish since this is my first time out on the lagoon with the boat. Found lots of grass on the flats, but no fish. Wasn't looking too hard though. Just mainly getting used to the new (6 months old) LT25. I'm going to have to do some research and recon to find new fishing locations. It'll just take time. I can say that the Gheenoe performed FLAWLESSLY. We ran 3 gallons of gas and saw most of the lagoon, including Haulover Canal. Saw so many dolphin and manatee. It was pretty smooth for the first half of the morning and then the wind picked up in the afternoon. Made trailering the boat quite difficult, but we managed. Next time, hopefully I'll catch a few fish!!
Thanks for watching!!

Thanks Ken. I think I used it 4 times and decided to sell it 10 months later. It was a great boat, just too much for me to handle by myself.

Found it.. Interesting trip. Thank you for sharing. I can see that would probably be the most challenging part of owning a boat....getting in and out of the water. Something we don't typically have to deal with when going out in a kayak. I am sure it won't take you long to get the hang of it.

JR's Fishing Journals I was happy that I actually got to see the very Southern part of the lagoon. I had never been down that far. seems to be deeper water. Also went into Haul Over canal. Need to go back and fish there for sure.

That was a nice eco tour you girls took! That was a long haul. It doesn't seem like it unless you've done it, but takes a while. Beautiful day for it. Too bad I had boat problems and we never found each other. I'd have run with you some of the way. The boat wake made me laugh...been there, got wet many times. I suggest slowing down a lot and rolling over the big ones at about a 20 degree angle. One other suggestion...don't back the trailer in so far when loading. You only need to submerge the tips of the bunks. That'll make it easier because you can nose up to it, get the bow in between and against the bunks, then punch it to slide up onto the trailer. You've seen me do it in person, so try it next time. Thanks for sharing the adventure.

Yeah we were hoping to run into you out there!! Next time for sure! Evidently I did not slow down enough on the wake! haha. On trailering the boat..... we'll definitely try the shallower trailer approach next time. But that dang tide!!!! I could not keep the boat in line with the trailer. Not even close. It was just pulling me right on by. A few other people were trailering at the same time and they were struggling too. But they landed it! The flat bottom on the noe makes it even harder I guess. And my newbie-ness is a big hindrance!! Oh... and those "first scratches" you were talking about..... we don't have to worry about that any more. We have a few barnacle scars from that dock. It didn't happen during the trailering though. Just when we were parked out there.

You can't come straight in when the current is ripping. It's kind of hard to describe but you come in at an angle with the bow into the current, then pivot at the last second. Think of a plane landing in a crosswind. Maybe when I post the video from yesterday I'll include the full approach so you can see, if it shows up well.

Yeah that's gonna take a bit of practice.... but I'll get it. I want to be able to do the entire process by myself... eventually! Haha.

That's my usual kayak spot. I'm familiar with it and it's only a little more than a mile to paddle in the kayak. I couldn't quite get my gheenoe into the grass far enough to hit any reds.

One time I took my yak across Georges Bar at that spot a few years ago. It was so shallow I had to stand and push pole my way across in what I would call snot grass and even then I just barley made it. There were giant reds belly crawling in that stuff...

Last time I was out there in my yak, the bar was completely exposed. Just imagine if there was someone flying by in a boat ... that wasn't familiar with the area. They'd be high and dry in a heartbeat!!
