Gheenoe LT25 Walk Thru - Custom Gheenoe Lo Tide 25 Review 2-1-22

Спорт

A video overview of how I have my boat, The Gotta Fly, setup. Given that my LT25 turns 10 years old this February, it seemed fitting to celebrate the anniversary with a review. This has been one of the most viewer-requested videos for years, ever since I started creating content for KZread. However, I kept putting it off because normally taking the time to film and edit something like this would take away from time spent on the water. However, weather and some personal conflicts "allowed" me the opportunity to get it done, finally. So, enjoy this long awaited (for some) overview of my 2012 Gheenoe LT25 DHSC.

    Hey Jeff, Great video. Can believe you have had it that boat for that long. You are probably the primary reason I switched over from a center console LT25 to a side console. The side console has been a great change for me. Stuff I noticed that might be worth sharing with others. 1. While your trolling motor mount is custom it is essentially the same one you can get from Custom Gheenoe. (Correct me if I am wrong) 2. Custom Gheenoe now offers a slightly taller side console. Its is easier to stand and drive with the newer one. 3. The Tackle Web cup holder next to your throttle are awesome. I use them too cause you can never have too many cup holders on a boat. haha 4. Jack plate/Tilt and Trim is an awesome mod. WOW!!!

    Tom, how funny! You had the first LT I ever laid eyes on, and were the inspiration for getting one myself. Then I saw an early side console owned by a guy name Tico, I think, and that clinched it for me. 1. So, yes I'd say the mounts from the shop are similar enough that it wouldn't matter for most, but mine was built specifically to fit the size and shape of the quick release bracket, AFTER I had modified the quick release bracket to fit the nosecap. So I'm sure dimensionally mine is different from what the shop offers. 2. That's true. I forgot about that, but then I'm not a spokesperson for CG, although I'd wager I've been at least partly responsible for a lot of their sales via this channel. 3. Tacklewebs is a great local company. I know the owner and he's a good, honest guy, former guide and makes great stuff. 4. Thanks! I remember you had a TSG plate back in the day. Those were all the rage for a few years.

    Oh, sorry to hear that! I hope your recovery progresses well and it doesn't hinder your lifestyle. Center console gheenoes are not high on my list. They are narrow boats and big consoles or center boxes can be a pain to walk around. Gheenoe also offers a smaller offset console which is a good compromise between a true CC and a SC. Might check that out while you're deciding. Don't know if you'd consider a Super 16 or Super 18, but both those gheenoes are bigger than an LT25 and offer more room and slightly better stability. Good luck with the hunt!

    Jeff, you’ve inspired me to get a Gheenoe.. I’m leaning heavily to the side console because the way your deck layout is great and your explanation on another reply answered my question. do you have any issues accessing your starboard side rod tube with holders? I know you have a cooler in front of the console which I love, but is it tough to get the rods in and out of that area?? Thanks!

  • @JeffHammerFishing

    @JeffHammerFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, it's a bit awkward getting rods in and out on that side. You have to bend them under the console and over the rear deck in order to feed them into and out of the tubes. That's why I keep things I rarely use on that side, such as a bait rod and a spare anchor pin. The cooler doesn't interfere at all since it is more centered and doesn't sit against the starboard gunnel.

    Jeff, great timing! I have an appointment to go out for a boat test on the LT25 with Pooger tomorrow meeting at the factory with my 240 lb. fishing buddy (I am around 175 lb.). Main concern with the LT25 is stability. By the way, we fish Lake Monroe from time to time for specs, but we have better luck on Lake Woodruff launching out of Highland Park Fish Camp. Going out on Lake Woodruff either Thurs. or Fri. on his boat. I fish from my peddle kayak on lakes and shallow inshore areas, but looking for a boat I can take out myself to cover more areas for shallow area fishing. My Scout 175 is not really intended for flats fishing.

    Well, there are a lot of bigger guys in the gheenoe community that swear by them. You won't be disappointed as long as you understand they aren't bay boats. They were designed for small, protected, shallow waters. I often exceed those design specifications and they can handle some pretty rough conditions, but it takes a little time to learn how to do that safely.

    I agree with hammer. Just sold mine. I'm 190 and my fishing buddy are about the same. Worked ok. Better with my girlfriend she's 120. Loved it by myself. Wide open trimmed out, jack plate up a little, and I had a custom prop with a cup on it. It allowed me to raise the jack plate a bit higher. Didn't need much water to run skinny. Good boats for sure 👍

    Thanks for the input, guys. I went out today with Pooger. He took me out first, then my buddy, and then the 3 of us. For two, it is perfect understanding it is a protected water boat, which is really all I am interested in. Three is too crowded. The boat passed the stability test, with either me or my friend standing on the raised front deck. I am now sold on having either the side or center console over a tiller steering option.

    @@johnthomson5730 I always used my jack plate. I live in tarpon springs area. Flats on low tide are very shallow. Rather than going out the channel and around I would skim for miles across the flats. Not to mention it lifts the motor out of the water some. Less drag is 2 or 3 mph and trim it out grabs another couple mph

    I have watched this video more than once as I love this layout. I am a big guy over 6 feet and 280 ish. I’m not much of a poller. Plan on fishing alone 80% of time and cruising with wife and step daughter the other 20%. I like a little elevation gain which I could do with a cooler or smaller polling platform like you have. I guess my main concern is how much lean I would have running by myself with a side console. Would I need tabs? Not sure they even offer them. Thanks.

  • @JeffHammerFishing

    @JeffHammerFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    There are tabs available but no, you won't need them. Honestly, there is almost zero lean for me and I'm about 200. Hypothetically though, let's pretend that the boat did list a little when underway, all I'd have to do is slide my butt over 6 inches and the problem would be solved. Honestly, the boat isn't that wide and I can still drive while sitting 2/3rds to port. In fact, I use this technique often when running in rough conditions if the wind is coming from the starboard side. By scooting over a bit, I can avoid getting splashed as much.

    Love the videos! What’s the diameter and pitch on the prop? I’m running a 9 1/2 x 13 aluminum and was thinking of going 10 1/8 x 13. Just curious looking around finding what works I hit 28 with my prop and don’t see the 30s like most have with the motor. Figured I go up in diameter.

  • @JeffHammerFishing

    @JeffHammerFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    One thing you need to remember about prop diameter is that it really doesn’t matter on small hulls. What matters is the pitch rating of the prop. For example, a 9.5” and a 10 -3/8” prop both rated at 13 pitch are designed to move the boat forward 13” each complete revolution. So, the top-end performance difference between the two will be negligible. What really matters is the pitch of the prop and the amount of tip cup it has if you plan to run shallow with it. Also, the more blades you add, the slower it will be but the better it will perform close to the surface. So, the long-winded answer to your question is that I am currently running a Powertech SRA3 14 pitch, which is a 10” prop. I also have the same prop in 13 and 15 pitch, and will swap them out depending on what I’m planning to do with the boat.

    Awesome Thanks for the response, I’m gonna keep researching and looking into understand props. I was told to up in diameter and it would help my rpm’s thats me going word to mouth from Someone I know. I’ll have to check out a different pitch in aluminum before I go a stainless. I love these sea pros! The motors done me very well and given me no issues at all.

  • @JeffHammerFishing

    It's just slightly over 18', maybe 18' 1" or so folded. Just remember, I have a jackplate too that sets the motor back another 5" or so. So, it's all going to depend on your setup, what motor and options you choose and how you setup your trailer. I moved the winch post forward and adjusted the bunks to get it as short as it is. It's certainly possible to be well under 18' if configured right.

No electrical, no gauges or switches, no motors, no platform, no lights or accessories and no throttle or shift controls. Basically, as minimal as I could get with the decks, hatches and console installed at the factory. The console came only with the steering wheel installed and not connected to anything. So, in 2012 I believe the cost for what I described above was around $5800 out the door.

  • @JeffHammerFishing

    @JeffHammerFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, before deciding on the side console I fished out of a friend's center console LT25 several times and quickly realized that the squeezing around the console when moving fore and aft was not for me. Plenty of people love CC's though, so my opinion is just my opinion. As for storage, I've got more storage than I'll ever use. Even with two batteries in the bow hatch, I still keep a ton of other stuff up there. Honestly, half the stuff in the hatches never sees the light of day, so I carry way more than I should. So, if you're going with front and rear raised decks like mine, I wouldn't give a second thought to storage limitations, even with a livewell. However, if you're only doing one set of deck and hatches, then yes, the area under the console is nice bonus storage space. Let me know what you decide.

  • @JeffHammerFishing

    @@caneanguidry3581 As for my experience in Gheenoes, there was only one time where I actually felt at risk, and if you've seen many of my videos, you've seen me out in conditions that I definitely shouldn't have been in. That one time was in my old 15'4 Highsider and I got caught in some really bad weather that kicked up 4-5 foot following swells. It was scary, but honestly I really made it back without serious issue. That said, my Low Tide 25 is far more stable. I've been in a lot of different skiffs and it's just as stable as most of the same length. Keeping your center of gravity low is key when underway. That's why I'm not a fan of Raptor LT25's. Having the helm so high off the water line is not ideal, in my opinion. But any of the more conventional helms where your feet are on the floor or your butt is on the deck are perfect.
