Memorial Day Weekend - Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report 5-25-2024

Спорт

Braved the holiday weekend crowds only to find the bite difficult despite numerous close up encounters with many tailing and cruising redfish in the shallows. Water was siltier than in past trips and the air was hazy and smelled of smoke from the Peacocks Pocket fire just a few miles away. Still managed a few really nice fish, so the trip was definitely worth it!

I laughed when I first saw it too! I almost did more than just freeze the frame, but I didn't have time. Thanks!

Thanks for takin us along with ya. I haven’t been over there in too long. I was all set up for a fresh water ultra light trip. Sat in the truck to leave and turned the key to get click, click, click. Battery had given up. End result was that I never wet a line. The holiday traffic here was terrible. Maybe next weekend. The 30” red was a real good fight. He and the other one made the trip. Hope you get out again soon like you spoke of, I’m fishing over there through you. Thanks……Tim

Thanks Tim! Sunday was not as good and I hit a submerged object on the way in, causing some motor damage.

Hey Jeff, I've really enjoyed watching your videos. You do a really good job of documenting the conditions and the fishing action without any fluff. I am pretty sure I'll be moving to the area in the next month or so- and I am really looking forward to fishing the lagoon. Maybe I'll see ya out there one day soon! Thanks again.

A couple of solid reds there Jeff, seemed like there were some fish around but they were just pretty picky on what they wanted. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the video, I guess it’s never give up (unless it gets to hot out there) lol. I went out on Friday to avoid the holiday weekend. Caught 3 reds but they were small. All 3 came from an island area. I also visited a cove that’s always so muddy that you can’t see bottom in 2ft. I’ve caught tailers in there before, but didn’t see any, but I have caught snook in there also by fishing the “wood” . I hooked and caught a huge 34” snook, that I was very lucky to boat. When chasing him around the boat I fell and managed to hold on to the rod! It was quite a fight. lol.

    34” snook was on Friday?

@@JeffHammerFishing yes it was on Friday, ironically the biggest I’ve caught was a 36” a couple years ago out of, believe it or not, Scottsmoore..

I said a couple of years ago out of Scottsmore but it was at least 5 years ago when I had the Gheenoe.

@@mikemcgovern8719 That’s a nice fish! Yeah, it’s been a long time since scottsmoor held quality fish. Used to be the go to place for big trout and drum. I don’t know the length of my biggest snook exactly, we didn’t measure them back in those days, we only weighed them. I know it was 38 lbs out of Jupiter Inlet.

You had a good day! I'm curious what length your rolling motor shaft is, and do you like it that high? Don't have to bend over which is good.

Thanks! 47” shaft and I customize them to that length myself, so yes, I prefer it that way. Very comfortable to use.

just curious why you dont pause your top water retreve also full moon nights they feed all night even in the good old days thats a tough bite

I pause if the lure gets hit but the barbs don’t stick. On complete misses I keep going. Think about how a bait fish reacts. If hit and stunned, it will stop. If missed it will panic and flee.

Has any grass survived in the lagoon? The water appears quite muddy in your video.

@dorisandpatrickleary8297 Yes, it’s coming back strong in many areas, but the water is starting to silt up in the south. There is quite a bit of grass around where I was, you just couldn’t see it much with the declining water quality.
