Yes. It's not optimisation look at the PS5/XSX versions. They need to drop the resolution. Looks like 1800p reconstruction is just too much. Hopefully fidelity FX will fix these issues.

It also targeted 60fps on the one x after your analysis was done when it released. They had a patch for that, but either way it's much more stable now.

It is amazing that the first game, that I can remember, that really followed this "arena as you go fighting style" was Karateka on the original 8 bit home computers of the late 70s to early 80s. Current games have come a long way via the improvements in hardware and capabilities, but the genre is firmly intact.

Optimization and good engineering. Good to see a smaller studio display good craft. Many big developers don’t bother and release incredibly sloppy builds and tech. Good job!

VRR always helps, don't notice any slow down in any games though I don't really pay so much attention to frames when in the games and focused on that.

More videos for Tom ! Yay Awesome, my favorite DF guy after Richard. He is on ther roll. Mortal Shell: not on Steam sadly, and don't have a PS5 yet. So can't play it properly atm.

03:10 Guys, the game *_install_* size is 5.2GB that means the download must be even smaller. Though they never really explain as to why that is impressive. On pc side of things, the non-enhanced version of this game was like 8gig download and then hold 12gig of storage. So yeah IDK what to say about this whole situation.

But PS5 dips around 50FPS in an area while Series X doesn't, which again shouldn't be happening, especially since PS5 is running at lower resolution. So yeah, both can be patched to solid 60FPS.

@@SSmitar No, I will not expect stable 60 for sure in series x! Hot pursuit remastered, watch from 12:39 ,control and don't remembered but there is a lot of games with heavy frame drops! So based on that result I will not expect a stable 60! But I can expect stable 60 from ps5 console for console but with unnoticeable lower resolution than series x! Atleast ps5 gives me peace while paying the games unlike series x with frame drops almost in every games!

Making it sound like a feature/request more than a bug fix. Odd, but okay. Another thing of interesting note, is the 1+GB file size difference between the two consoles (PS5 coming in nearly ~20% smaller in file size, despite no differences in textures). The benefits of Kraken with Oodle texture compression is really showing it's strength.

Whats up with the grayish blacks on consoles (10:26) ?

@DigitalFoundry any thoughts as to why stepping on those traps causes the character animation to run at a lower fps? Noticed this on PS5.

Slight performance edge goes to ps5 but some areas run better on the series X and the series X runs at much higher resolution. 57% more pixels, that's a lot.

Hopefully the fixes will bring PS5 resolution to 1800p + clean up that one big fps drop and the XSX version's screen tearing + texture streaming issues are resolved as well.

Or you could say 36% less pixels than XSX depending how to spin it, but a higher res patch is incoming on PS5 Why dont DF just hold off console comparisons till after all the major patches on both consoles, especially after being told there's still more coming

Guys, could you please do a review and testing of the AYA NEO PC handheld.

2160p max settings in this game is surprisingly demanding on PC. With my 2080 Ti I was getting pretty frequent dips below 60 fps (usually around 50-55 as an average range though heavy effects on screen would dip fps into the 40s). The devs for this game definitely utilized many graphical aspects of UE4. The bright spot for this game is its single-player nature which means if you’re okay with the drops you’re still going to have a good time while having all of the eye-pop you can handle as you don’t have to worry about other players potentially ruining the experience if you generally tend to play soulslikes solo.

We need a P5 Strikers breakdown between PS4/5 and Switch. And Cyber Ninja PS5 120fps breakdown.

it would be cool if developers could implement dynamic fps caps that change depending on the area your in, some areas might run better at a locked 60fps where as other areas might struggle to meet 60 so maybe using a load screen to transition to a locked 30fps would be a little less jarring than seeing your frame rate run wild, or you could just fork out a couple grand and brute force your way through the whole game with a kick ass rig ;)

You all should check the new graphics options they added in Overwatch for the Series X and S.

@@NoName-hj5hg They did add a performance mode (X: 1440p 120fps and S: 1080p 120fps), however they also added a resolution mode (X: 4K 60, which was already there because of the Xbox one X update, and S: 1440p 60fps), and a balanced mode (X: 1440p 60fps and S: 1080p and 60fps), which I don’t know exactly what it’s supposed do. I did see in video that showed the lighting, reflections, and shadows were upgraded from even the One X and Series S. The textures might be upgraded as well, but I’m not to sure.

xbox pop in ps5 no pop, xbox more frame rate dips, and slower load time. hows is that a win for xbox🤣😂 ps5 getting resolution update soon. so maybe a temporary slight advantage in one category.

I thought series S was gonna be very easy to scale down from series X. Not turning out that way sometimes. PS5 version devs said was coming in lower than they intended and they'll patch in a fix, so it seems they undercooked it, or something went wrong because 1440p was not intended behavior. Reminds me of the outriders demo, one version seems to be more finished than the other. Valhalla and Dirt 5 also had the same issue going just in the opposite direction.

Cool game and the story behind its origin, Not surprise by the S being bad but I hope the 720-1080p mode can get it to something respectable

The S is pulling off a resolution above its recommended 1080p while the frame rate is consistently above 30 fps. It could definitely handle 900p locked at 60 fps which would look better on a 1080p display/ television than 1800p reconstruction. Also, I thought the developer claim it would later release a 1080p at 60 fps patch for the XSS.

@@Ovan61 they are looking into improving it, no guarantee it will be locked 1080p60 but its the target. XSS have a large window of dynamic resolution from 720p to 1440p depending on FPS usually. the game looks well blurry anywhere from 900p and under, 1080p naïve is pretty good still. 1800p reconstructed on UE4 is not checkerboarding if thats what you think. and that should look better than pure 1080p

I'm curious how it does with VRR displays too !!

@@Captainrave The implementation isn't always perfect - especially if the frame rate dips down under 40fps ; Also as a rule it works better on a monitor that is compatible with it than it does on say a Samsung TV. The 2nd rate TV Manufacturers struggled with getting it to work in 2020 (where they even managed at all) and so we will have to see how they manage in 2021 - there was some issues with it mucking the colour up in some situations.. that Freesynch Premium Pro should completely circumvent on the 2021 TV's that offer it hopefully. it certain helps on plenty of titles with minor frame dips or for things that are supposed to be 120fps and dip down to like 90 - those it helps a whole lot.

I rather have higher resolution and maybe in some spots small drops than overall lower res and steady fps ofc steady fps is important but in cases like this nobody will notice it only console warriors argue other this shit

Not really considering it has worse performance and the ps5 is getting an update but the textures are the exact same bit is performing better so it’s actually a ps5 advantage I know you’re desperately looking for a way to find a win for the series x but no the ps5 has consistently had better performance than series x

I hold these next gen versions to a lower standard since they're just basically a free upgrade. 60fps/1800p is honestly such a big upgrade for a soulsborne game like this, so you dont need much more.

This new hardware is very capable for more. Jus rush jobs by devs. Like why release PS5 version then release another patch again?they cld have waited for their QA. Worse more for Xss consumers. Bad job for me.

Exactly. I don't know how they could call it a true next gen version(DF) when it literally says enhanced and runs in the old systems profiles just uncapped on frames. Also why didn't he mention SX being dynamically scaled like X. In other tech breakdown they found PS5 to be locked at 1440p. But here ilhe found the same thing but tried to insuiate that drs existed even though he didn't witness it, while not even mentioning the drs that actually does exist for SX version

It's clear they all need work. Resolution on ps5 framerates on the series console. They probably should have waited on pushing this update out.

Framerate is better than 95% of games last gen. It doesn't need a fix. Locked 60fps is a rarity and few drops means nothing

The resolution AND framerates were worse on the PS5 than on the Series X. Did you not see the footage where, for an extended period of time, the PS5 dropped to the low 50's and even 49FPS? The Xbox Series X didn't have a drop nearly as bad as that.

Love this game so far on PC. Seriously fun, and pretty damn gorgeous at ultra settings.

@@griffgames9538 It's just stupid that they released a weaker console at all. Now it takes even more time to optimize because devs have to deal with 2 different Xbox SKUs. Series S shouldn't exist, go ahead and release a Series X without a disc drive but this is just bad for everyone. They advertised it as a 1440p 120hz console, but it has yet to achieve either of those claims. It's only going to get worse as PS4 and Xbox One are phased out and games become more demanding. It'll be another

I HATE texture pop in. So I'm glade the PS5 version doesn't have this issue. The FPS looks great to.

They did something weird with the Series S, why reconstruct from 1800p when the console is said to be targeting 1440p. That's too much for it, wouldn't that be better to aim to 1440p without reconstruction, or 1080p reconstructing from 1800/1440p ?

I'm starting to think all issues are basically just caused by the game rather than the system. I've got demon's souls remake and it looks and plays great. I've also got dark souls 2:sotfs and I'm blown away by the sheer amount of pop in. You'd think it would be running better then the more demanding game, but I guess not.

You are correct. Aside from XBX's minor GPU advantage and PS5's minor I/O advantage, these are just off the shelf PC's with near identical hardware. The advantage always goes to XSX though as it doesn't look like a modem from 2005.

A little more than that. For these titles, 100% just a developer issue with the software...but that's mostly due to the Series X being on a legitimately different architecture all around with hardware backwards compatibility (what this is running on, not software; running on native hardware). Since the engine was not coded to take advantage of the improved hardware instructions, this is not a 'real' optimized title for the Series consoles. However, for the PS5, the instructions are the same; It's "much of the same" when designing a game for the PS5 verses the PS4 Pro on purpose; Faster development cycles and updates. Wherein comes the elephant in the room DF here has been pointing at for quite a while now. Developers aren't even using the Series X for anything more than backwards compatibility or adding in the PS5 'port' to the Series consoles and it just 'works' with minor adjustments. Wait until a year from now and you'll start seeing...a bit more of a difference happening. Otherwise, the PS5 will be more heavily focused, by then, on it's real intension: Immersion, included in that is PSVR2. I suspect a LOT of games will be available for that, which usually wouldn't be.

Time and money to make on version better the. The other it might be cheaper for them to just match the weaker console and just sell the systems . I would like to see how good the exclusives will be

Demon souls is a first party title and much lower resolution than the xsx version. It's also not locked. Both have good performance. Series s version needs work though.

Really impressed by the Series X, considering how much it gaps the PS5 in resolution, yet they drop frames at mostly the same areas, and in some trouble spots it actually performs better than the PS5. Series S could use more work though, maybe a fixed 1080p resolution?

Speaking as a big souls fan, I think that Mortal Shell is the best non FromSoft souls game. Definitely worth playing.

yes. Please give us a 1080p patch for the Series S. All games should be made to run at least at 1080p/60 on all consoles.

Very close once again but perhaps a slight edge to series X this time for 1800p. Not gonna lie, I find the back and forth of this generation really interesting!

@@Archivist42 do you own mortal shell? is it worth the money? i played and finished dark souls 1,2,3, and blood bourne with sekiro.

From the mountain tops....can we get over the 4k target? Consoles are never gonna do it (4k 60). 1440p, or even 1800p is just fine. Some of us have 120hz tv's and even those of you w/o it would really benefit from higher frame rates and better frame pacing.

Agree. 1800p or 1440p and a solid 60, and maybe a 1440p RT mode if it’s possible. If AMD releases their „dlss“ equivalent 1440p and RT 60 would be the way to go. Edit: just waiting for vrr on the PS5 so that my LG CX77 can take full advantage of it.

4k 60 is the sweet spot this gen, and everything I've played on ps5 at 60hz has been locked there. Consoles are largely developed for tv, and a decent 65 inch telly with proper hdr really benefits from the detail and resolution being high. Despite you saying they aint gonna do it, almost everything ive played on this gens cosoles has done it fine. If you want 1080p or 2k gaming, just buy a pc, where that's much more the expected performance.

4K is a marketing gimmick. Most games look and play better if they have some dynamic 1440-1800p resolution with higher quality graphics settings instead of silly resolutions targets.

@@titntin5178 so far nothing has really ben native 4k/60. i think upscaled 4k via fidelity fx (amd‘s dlss) and 60fps is the way to go. You still get a very nice pucture on big tv‘s and the benefit of 60fps

I've never been this early to a DF video. This is nice.

Well that’s awesome I might need to play it again first ever soul like I ever bet so I love it definitely gets easier the more upgrade your shell is but never become god mode like a few hits your still out but I recommend for anyone interested in try soul like genre

Xbox Series has excellent tools for developers, they simply do not want to take the time to use them due to the fact that it is a different api, instead the ps5 api is the same as ps4 and that results in an easier job.

Off topic but on a lot of new games ps5 xsx ive noticed clipping on characters seems to be pretty bad like ps2 quality you can see chins going through chests as they move and with the 4k resolution and textures it stands out quite a bit to me.

The fact that Series S is running max quality textures at near native 1440p, reconstructed up to almost 1800p and manages to stay above 30FPS... that’s nothing short of a miracle in itself. It’s pretty stupid though that the devs thought the Series S could handle all that at 60FPS, that’s outrageous. They either should’ve capped resolution at 1080p, or they should’ve locked the frame rate at 30FPS

The sound design, setting, and voice acting (although there’s not much dialogue) are all top notch and intriguing. I loved this game and didn’t feel like it was a Souls ripoff, just more of a Souls homage with a few unique elements.

I just completed it yesterday. Once you get the flow you can smash through it as its not a super long game but it was enjoyable.

Patches come and go depending on the stage in game development. On the other hand, there is never mention of HDR (implemented or not), in such a dark game as that; 3D-RT audio PATCH,... on the comparative reviews / approximations. There are NO questions about all that to the developers beyond the typical ones. By the way, the PS5 has something called Tempest. Does this sound familiar? sure not. At the end of the day whether or not the game is over the technical information isn't complete at all. This is true for all the pages/webs dedicated to "brainy analysis", they all end up analyzing the same things again and again... Too bad there isn't another "Benchmark" Photo Mode (very interesting), in Mortal Shell Enhanced Edition, to be compared... note the irony: "The game was developed by Cold Symmetry. an update adding new shell shades (skins), a new quest, a PHOTO MODE...." I'm also interested in whether or not the game implements HDR. HDR also consumes resources, for example, the same 3D-RT sound, especially if you don't have dedicated hardware, etc... not everything is the best or worst upscalling/rescaling resolution. That is a part. Finally, at what final resolution are the textures of PS5 and Series X compared to the PC 4K/60-120fps on RTX 2090ti Master Race version? Where are ALL that SELECTIVE PAUSES and x800 ZOOMs from the past? When will the DF's machine-zoom be fixed? Mortal Shell Enhanced Edition = Unreal Engine 4 (LODs, old tricks, last generation...). Needless to say more, until the release of Unreal Engine 5. Cold Symmetry: “a veteran coalition of AAA developers” and will be the studio’s debut title. Andrew McLennen-Murray, Anton Gonzalez, Vitaly Bulgarov (Call of Duty, Ghost of Tsushima)" Good luck for their new modest company.

How is the length? and if anyone knows which Souls game is this the closest to?

Who else is here after leaning its on PS Plus, BUT the enhanced 4k60fps version is locked out for us? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ fucking Sony.

I bought this game on PS4, fought 3 bosses and got lost going in circles --the only game I've ever gotten lost in. Playing at 3am may have contributed to that. Maybe I'll play it again someday.

@7:40 as you should know from your own tests, some "upgraded games" are not that well made and they just stick to the Ps4 Pro's resolution setting. We have seen that a few times now so, instead of saying that the developer did a bad job, you are saying "iam surprised" wow

@@BlindMaphisto Yeah, they definitely dropped the ball on it for sure. It had potential being a AAA game but they failed to deliver that DS feeling.

Have the feeling that this is just like playing a backwardscomp. Game sold as enhanced edition. This game could easily run 4K60fps in a real enhanced edition. I’m playing it on my Ps5 because of the adaptive triggers (once you play with dual sense there is no back).

Oof, that texture load-in on XSX is rough.. I'll wait for a patch (and also hope that they put it on Game Pass at some point, heh)
