You have no idea how intimating facing goro as a kid playing this back in '93 it was terrifying because of how ridiculously overpowered his attacks are and absolutely brutal. You pretty much didn't need fatalities for him. His attacks are pretty Damm bad.

Thanks for these videos of this hack. I had no idea it existed. Now I gotta check it out!

Johnny Cage seems to be the character the game defaults to if it reads invalid match data in this port. For example if you use a game genie to start the game on a match after Shang Tsung's position rank you will fight an endless string of matches against Johnny Cage, but with fatalities disabled.

@davintheraven Likely Cage is also picked as a failsafe if an invalid character value is referenced, being the "matches" after Shang Tsung or for Goro/Tsung's non-existent battle plans would be referencing unrelated game data that is unlikely to be all 00s.

​@@mresturk9336 Well, yes and no. So it's true that Cage is actually assigned a value of 0, however there is no failsafe for when a character outside the range of 0-8 is chosen. If an invalid fighter value is loaded, the game crashes. You are right that the data after battle plans is non-zero, however there is not actually an endless string of Cages after Shang Tsung. To explain this: the list of fighters on the battle plan is actually stored in WRAM at addresses $00E4 to $00F9. Each fighter value is stored in a single single byte/address and each row of the latter is two bytes/addresses (to accommodate endurance matches). The values stored at $00FA-$00FF are all zeros, so this accommodates 3 matches with Cage. On the fourth match, the game will try to load the non-zero value stored at $0100 and crash.

Hey, thanks for featuring MKCE. Sorry to hear that Goro sometimes crashes the game when he gets up. This actually used to happen a lot earlier in development, but I thought I had completely eliminated this bug. Do you find that holding a particular button combination while he gets up increases the likelihood of the crash? Also, with regards to the loss of UB/UF jumps, I have not seen this personally. How often have you seen this, and do you find there's a particular event that causes this to occur? Thanks

There are three bugs I encountered with Goro: 1) The first one is the one you mentioned - when Goro is knocked down and when he is getting up, holding Down on the D-Pad crashed the game. It only happened on that one occasion though. (I know that doing this crashes all the time on the original version of the game). 2) The second one also relates to him getting up. If he is knocked down and when he is getting up, holding Down on the D-Pad makes him not being able to move or do anything when he stands. He needs to be hit by the opponent for the player to regain control. 3) The third one just happened on one occasion, I cannot remember exactly but it was like this: pressing UB or UF doesn't make him jump anymore, instead it makes him repeat the first frame of his throw animation over and over on the ground, until you release UB/UF. This doesn't crash the game. (I know that in the original version of the game Goro had something similar to this when pressing UB or UF and it crashed the game). Unfortunately I don't know what caused these bugs to happen, all I know is that all three occurred while I was fighting the CPU opponents. In the Arcade version of the game, if you selected Goro (through codes, etc.), he actually has some CPU control embedded in even though he was player-controlled. Could that be a reason for the SNES bugs I wonder.

@@Krizalid99v2 It's a strong possibility. I know for a fact I have seen bugs that occur in 1P matches that don't occur in 2P matches, such as the ZNSES Raiden morph bug that Mario Pena found. At any rate, I will see what I can do before the next release. :)

Goro's clone just looks like his shadow. I'm surprised at that. I thought his clone would look exactly like him, just like some of those games with the characters that can only be unlocked by cheats have clones that look exactly like them.

It's likely because this was an old game and they never envisioned Goro as a playable character so no point on giving him a mirror match palette, that's why when you hack or glitch the game, you see that the slot where his alternate palette is probably at is full of 00 00 (black color).

@@skar8009 I should have mentioned this before, but I remembered this thing on Sonic- The Fighters where if you hacked the game to play a hidden character (Metal Sonic or Dr. Eggman), the palette of their clone matches. Maybe, it runs on a different programming than Mortal Kombat does. I know they're made by different companies.

Dang that light show after shang. I don't think I've ever seen that before!

Does anyone know if strength bonus is tied directly to health values so like 80,000 bonus would indicate 80 health? Also is it a flat rate of hp for all characters aside from bosses of course.

Goro (at least in Mortal Kombat: Champion Edition for the SNES) is overpowered as heck (although that's pretty obvious to anyone seeing this video). His throw does at least 25% damage, so four throws will KO/kill the opponent. You can loop throw opponents w/Goro to death if you're fast enough to do so (and/or juggle-uppercut them to death - in this hack) - and CPUs (usually) can't escape it. Now that I think about it, all of his moves (except for his grab-and-pound, which is probably the least damaging of his moves - which is probably a Low Kick's equivalent of damage) do at least 20% damage (or more). I do see one weakness, though (with him): his giant size. While there is no doubt that his size is impressive and that he's very powerful (like I said, he can KO regular opponents in 4 throws), his size - or rather, his weird hit-box - allows some infinites to be done (exclusively on him). For example, Scorpion's spear-uppercut combo can turn into an infinite (if done right) against Goro (because of Goro's giant hit-box). I know this because I have played MK1 for the SNES.

Goro and Kintaro were badass. More better than Motaro.
