Mormons Boast Then Hide Their Murders: The Aftermath of The Mountain Meadows Massacre

Ойын-сауық

This is part four where Barbara and I discuss the Mountain Meadows Massacre, a tragic event in Mormon history where a group of Mormons in 1857 killed a large group of innocent men, women, and children.
We kick things off with a review of the brutal crime of wiping out all the innocent people including young witnesses. As tensions soar, the Mormon leaders are left reeling at the shocking aftermath of their actions. Lies fly and a frantic cover-up ensues, leaving everyone scrambling to keep their secrets buried. The whole situation blows wide open when freighters stumble upon the scene. Amidst the chaos, questions arise about what the orphaned kids might know and how to make them forget. Things take an even more sinister turn when leaders start bragging about their misdeeds in church and resort to making violent threats, then telling prophet Brigham Young a fictionalized version of events.

LDS church certainly has a long tradition of lying and gaslighting. Another massacre that has not received a lot of attention is the Circleville Massacre where Mormons killed Paiute Indians (including children).

Thanks ladies, great show. Wondering if Barbara has any news regarding the decoding of Brigham Young’s financial ledgers and other personal effects. In the article “Communicating in Code”, Utah Historical Quarterly, Volume 89, Number 4, 2021, mathematicians had begun to decipher some of Young’s codes; including the Patterson and Kane ciphers and codes. It appears the Mormons were ordered to Blood Atone anyone who entered the Utah territory in the fall of 1857. Young was expecting the US Army to arrive earlier than it did at Ham’s Fork on September 28th, 1857. Brigham ordered his Major Lot Smith to burn 52 wagons filled with their winter provisions and to drive off hundreds of military animals on October 5th, 1857- so they may have thought the Baker-Fancher wagon train was there to service the 2,500 US Army soldiers dispatched by Buchanan in May of 1857?

It feels like there is a falsely exculpatory nature to this book in trying to absolve Brigham Young. John D. Lee certainly got hung out to dry and all the leaders knew it.

This is entirely on the Brigham the bum. His ego led to this and other atrocities. Anyone who ever helped hide these facts are accessory to the crimes.

@@CarahBurrell Please forgive my anger and indignation. We can split legal hairs til the cows come home but his “want to be king ego” created the environment and his having natives supported by militia attack the immigrants in previous raids pretty much guaranteed this would happen. I for one think he left the office early when he found out purely out of fear for his position and not because of an ounce of remorse. Cannot believe there is a university plus god knows what else named after that……person. Makes me want to believe in an everlasting hell. Again forgive me but Ive been repulsed by the “monkish ignorance and superstition” as Jefferson put it for a good deal longer than ya’ll.

36:09 Nuance: "He (Lee) had a heart at least." Brown: "He did have a heart...yeah." What you meant to say is that Lee had a heart that pump ice-cold blood like mass m3rD&r3r$.

24:23 I have an issue with the Mormons, who on one hand accuse never and/or exmos, of not understanding the fear/paranoia/trauma, of the events of Missouri and Illinois, but then have little to no empathy or desire to learn about the traumas caused to people of colour, or the LGBTQA2+ experience. I honestly feel it is disingenuous (maybe unintentional) and comes from a fear of understanding and acknowledging their own past.
