Montana Sapphire Mining At The Blue Jewel Mine

We had a great time hunting for Montana sapphire gem stones at the Blue Jewel Mine. If you are a rock hound this is a great place to visit.
The find of the day was a 5.5 ct blue sapphire.

I am totally new and do not understand how you get know that is is saphire.. could you make a video about this or just give some advice for us? We are thinking to visit US in the end of September. Is it good time for digging? How much costs enterance to that area, how many time takes cutting and how much it could cost? Where to find right person who will help you? Sorry for my grammar, but is is realy interesting experience i think

I mined a small creek in northeast washington last weekend and didnt realize i was throwing away diamonds so clear they looked like small icecubes , i thought they were just clear quartz . pisses me off !! Iv been recovering from shoulder surgery so i used my left hand mostly and it was tough . theres as much garnet as black sand in my pan , all of this was only down about a foot in the creek .

Gòod finds, to me, compared with sapphires from Queensland Australia, these seem very pale colours. Have a look for 'Tim's Adventures' KZread sequences. He is within a small about 10 square kilometer "commercial" field where machinery is allowed. The entire fields are several thousand sq kilometer, all but commercial area, is reserved for fossicking with manual operations only. Did some surface searching in 1970s. Digging prevented by ststt of summer monsoon, rainy, period. So just walked over previous winter diggings. In 6 days my father and I found over 300 carats of various sapphires in blue, green, straw, pale colours various, red/pink and a number of large star sapphire pieces just exposed by the weather/rains. Local camping park store owner offered $400 immediately to buy our lot, as we were about to leave. In 1970s that was worth much more than now, but we kept them. Not a bad result for little effort. A family we met on arriving had a secret site, they demanded we do not follow, far in the forested area, they had a 55 carat deep Straw yellow stone found the previous year at their special dig, insured at $500K faceted as a large ring mount.

A lot of the commercial mines sapphires are sold on the world market. Unusually many are remarketed as Srilankan sapphires though real output from there is scaling down, almost as if there the mines are running out. SRILANKA does have good Rubies those seem less common elsewhere around the world. Our Queensland sapphires do have some red ones but mostly not quite the rich blood red from Srilanka. Our straw yellows can be world leading, and the remaining green to deep blues are world class in the best examples. Of course like always there are masses of lesser stones, and tons of black conundrum for grinding related uses. The precious stones though are enough that many people earn fortunes. Other than the old timer, there were a retired old couple where we searched, they had retired from running a motel, after the husband had a heart attack. They started traveling with a long caravan and 4WD and happened on the fossiking gem fields and found some sapphires, and ceased travelling. In one year they earned over $1.5M (1973 $) and that manually only working a couple of morning and a couple of evening hours only, resting in the hottest daytime hours. Due to heavy monsoon rains digging is not sensible over our summer as the water turns the grey dust layer into gooey clay that washing out the gems is near impossible. Virtually each pebble must be finger rubbed in water to wash off the clay. So about 6 working months only is possible, which is why we only surface searched old rubble of the winter diggings. Good luck with any future gem digging for you.
