Monster Hunter World - The Review (2018)

Ойындар

I'd played two Monster Hunter games before this, and as such I went into World being pretty pessimistic about my chances of falling in love with the series all over again. Surely it was 'played out' and I'd quickly get bored of the same weapons and same Monsters and same grindy gameplay, right?
I love being this wrong.

Any ally hit by the longsword will usually get tripped and longsword users are the worst to play with if they dont know how to work with a team because they ruin any combo you plan by smackin ya as they swing their weeb katana around.

    I think you're giving credit to the wrong people when it comes to Monster Hunter's consumer-friendly practices. The monhun dev team stands as a bulwark against the predatory practices of the current gaming industry. They have fought tooth and nail with their publisher to retain those practices through these highly monetized times, and as much as capcom would love to monetize a series this big, the developers care enough not to let them. That's who deserves the credit, the passionate people who make this game and fight for their creative freedom.

  • @777-twitenoise3

    @777-twitenoise3

    It's also generally important to not homogenize developers and their publishers because more often than not it's the publishers doing the shady shit and the developers just trying to make the most of it.

  • @KaitoRyuKayser

    @KaitoRyuKayser

    considering is a phenomenon in japan, i'm pretty sure capcom would be destroyed should they try to "taint" this franchise. This publishes doesnt deserve credit for not monetizing it (kind of) deserves credit for realizing that they can't fuck this up. But i am of the same mind as you. The developers fight to make this game good. They CARE about it. And, while they deserve credit, it's the absolute fanbase that helps them keep this franchise like it is up to this point, and since they win their fanbase over and over again with every new release, they know they will have the audience's support. This creates a cycle in which the developers get more influence on their game that what the publishers would otherwise have, and should they try to break that cycle (specially now that it has grown to be so huge) they will be consumed by it and probably lose the developer team (i am unsure of this point, please correct if am wrong, i dont know how videogame developer-publisher politics work), potentially losing tons of money, and we all know they wouldnt want that. The problem with modern gaming development is that games are coming out to get money out of us instead of providing us with somethign worthwhile. One of the many things i learned in my 2 years in business school is that to make sure your product sells you have to target a problem, a need, to make the potential client feel happy with it and keep buying it. Your product needs to be not only unique and appealing, but also work as intended. This is something that monster hunter has always nailed for me. It points to give you the expirience of hunting a monster. I'm just going to stop here now because i feel like i got off trail. P.D.: you are right and i agree with you, developer team of monster hunter is awesome, capcom still sucks (they destroyed the Breath of Fire franchise)

  • @bufosp

    @bufosp

    as much as they would hate to admit, mh developers basically own capcom lol. joking aside, ryozo tsujimoto is the brother capcom's current CEO, and son of one of capcom's founder, so that's that. and now that the franchise has exploded, i truly believe that Capcom will basically say yes to anything that MH team says. but yeah, this franchise is basically some sort of its own "religion" in Japan. nobody would want to mess with this and we should thank Ryozo Tsujimoto and his team not to fuck with us as the customer.

    same thing we could say with destiny 2, and battlefront 2. but hey, free DLC contents, no invasive microtransactions, a game that feels like it's complete upon release, and a game that is all about being "all in this together" mentality shown from the enthusiasm of the NPCs in the story, to the multiplayer "Unity rewards" mechanic. i'd pick this game in a heart beat over any game out there at the moment.

    Bought tho game earlier this year. Was playing Dauntless at the time, reaching endgame which was kinda rare because the game was new. Fired up MHW got overwhelmed by its much more complex and dynamic world. And I left it alone for good 3 months. Even though my good friends were also paying it. Main reason: I was already too far playing Dauntless and it is just much more simpler (re: easier) than MHW. Then I asked my friend what iceborne is. Lucky for me, PC player that it hasn't been released. Fired up Capcom's best one more time because iceborne was creating such a buzz, then after he told me I felt like I wanna be a part of it. But this time I put up with the complexity, what do you know.. 280 hours later, I still could not stop playing. It's rich, it's beautiful, it's immersive. I have pre-purchased Iceborne. Yes the only game I've ever pre-purchased. Because I want to play it the moment it's released. Never touched Dauntless ever again since. Sorry, phoenix lab, I'm not bashing on your game. But it's the truth. My truth at least.

    "Monster Hunter is the Call of Duty of Japan"... except Monster Hunter aged well and just made previous games get more recognition positively. Iceborne expansion for Monster Hunter World will just make it even better. I bought MH:W for a friend who just whined through most of the experience since he prefers FPS/sci-fi... but luckily once he started playing around with different weapons and found his groove he jumped right on the bandwagon saying that MH:W is an awesome game. I even told him that when we played Lost Planet 2 years ago and we loved playing it that it was in fact developed by Devs from the MH series, AND to make it even sweeter Devs from Lost Planet 2 are helping in the development of Iceborne!!! It's just such a great "Thank you" note to players.

    That's because he IS obsessed. Monster Hunter is the kind of game series that either inspires a hardcore fan to buy every single one and sink thousands of hours into them, or puts you off so terribly that you swear to never touch any of the games or may a terribly painful death take you. Luckily, the games have constantly been getting better since the core experience never changes. It just gets refined with every release. MonHun is not just a very popular game, it's a cultural phenomenon in it's home, Japan. That's why Capcom treats it with so much reverence. It's special, and they know they can't afford to fuck it up for ANY reason whatsoever.

    I hate you, Skill Up. You have written such an amazing, complex, just, and simply overwhelmingly appropriate review for Monster Hunter World. The way you have illustrated just what this game is, and how well it plays and how good it feels to play the game. It has made me so excited, and it makes me want to pick the game up right now and start playing. But I, and many others, are waiting patiently for the PC release, and you have single-handedly made me coo-coo for cocoa puffs over this game. I now want nothing more but to know what all the fuss is about, to experience the game for myself and to commit many, many hours of my life to what I can only assume is one of the most phenomenal gaming experiences of this era. All thanks to your ability to write and give the most meaningful, and overall FAIR reviews of any reviewer I've ever watched in the past five years. You don't just make points, you back them up with evidence, and then you back up that evidence with more evidence. Your reviews are always fair, and they are always true to what a game is. I say "I hate you" not as an insult, but as the highest compliment I am capable of awarding to you. You manage to take a game that wasn't even on my radar two weeks ago, and somehow make me feel as hyped as ever for it. All with just one, simple review. My hats off to you, sir. I'm off to throw my money at Capcom, now.

    Ernest B there is this dude that down Nergi with 9 bow shots in 57 seconds. But yes, when the fresh bloods like me started playing this game, going solo against Anjanath, Diablos, Rathalos actually took that much time. Well, maybe much shorter if you didn’t dodge their one shot KO.

    Look, I'll be honest, I'm here because I'm impatient and frothing at the mouth for Iceborne and feeling kind of voyeuristic. So I'm listening to you talk about a thing I already love. That said, you hit on almost everything that really stands out about MHW and did it in a well-rounded, well thought out, comprehensive way. Not a minute too long. (I would've also mentioned music and sound design as part of the pristine art direction, the fact that they've clearly worked hard to shake some of the more ridiculous aspects of past creature design and made sure all the monsters look like real living animals that fit into an ecosystem, all of the side endeavors to consume you like endemic life and monster research, and the absolute charm that comes from its sense of playfulness since its basically 'Catpuns: the vidja game'.)

  • @jackmeriustacktheritrix
    @jackmeriustacktheritrix8 ай бұрын

    For anyone new coming to MHW/Iceborne, do yourself a massive favor and DO NOT use the Defender/Guardian ARMOR that is offered, the weapons are okay to use if you really want imo because it will just speed up the hunts a bit, but the armor set will completely cover for any mistakes you make with it's super high defense and defensive focused skills and cause you to develop alot of bad habits that you will end up being punished for once you reach Iceborne (aka Master Rank). At the start of the game you'll be able to tank a TON of hits using the defender armor whereas if you were playing through the game using the normal armor you'd have access to at that point you'd maybe be able to tank 2 or 3 hits, which will be the case in Master Rank no matter which armor you use, so you best get used to playing that way now.

I am not just enjoying a review but experiencing a beautifully constructed narrative. I decided to come back to this review after putting 150 hours into the game and man you were right! This game is a game changer for the industry. This game made me remember what it was like to be a gamer. I am 35 years old and I have experienced some gorgeous games and masterpieces since AMIGA. I am not saying those days were better And get nostalgic but every game we played kept me and my friends talking for weeks. Not because the content was awfully long but complete. I am really glad monster Hunter world developers kept their creative freedom and I am really glad that I have found a KZreadr who sings to my heart. Skill Up, when you mentioned feeling crazy when you played Neir and noticed that nobody seemed to be giving that game the recognition it truly deserved or communicating how much of a master piece it was, you reflected almost the exact same feelings that I had about Prey (2017). The exception being that if anything Prey actually mostly just got incredibly lukewarm or poor reviews and I don’t think sold very well. This made me incredibly sad for the incredible designers in Arkane and the industry as a whole, as I felt that it probably means that we are unlikely to see many games of that breed (Immersive Sims with interconnected worlds) in the future, let alone a sequel. But then your video on Prey gave me a spark of hope that at the very least I’m not alone and that there are others who really do appreciate Prey and all of its accomplishments. That’s still one of my favorite of your videos. I’ve probably watched it like 6 or more times total. I appreciate how you gave all of the info on the game and the background behind it... Oh yea, and Monster Hunter World is amazing!

    With most games, I had to learn a couple core mechanics and that got me through the majority of the game, this was not the case with MHW. As someone who came off fresh from beating Horizon Zero Dawn on UH, I instinctually picked up the bow as my first weapon. I died a lot. I picked the charge blade, thinking the extra damage would carry me until I got good. But it proved too complex as a beginner weapon. For the remainder of my time through low rank I mained the Switch axe, which I did okay with... barely winning, but winning all the same. But when I got to High Rank... I found the hammer. Me and my trusty hammer hit Master Rank today. I have never EVER been more challenged or more rewarded for my effort than MHW. If you struggled like I did... keep going. I believe in you. You'll find your groove and it'll all be worth it.

Whether it's an intro or an outro or whatever, it's still the same video from the same dude who is putting out the same, if not better content than what's come before. Who cares? I just got past the intro and I think your clarifications and nailing what it means to call a game good in your eyes and how it should translate to the audience was really great. The comparison you made to that song was also really interesting to listen to and I totally understand what you mean. While I do agree that the solo experience is amazing, one of my favorite moments of MH was when I first hopped online in Tri on the Wii. This was my first MH game (aside from trying a demo of one of the PSP games), and I was still learning things. Met up with a group of hunters and one (whose name I have sadly forgotten) spent our entire play session making sure I was always getting some kind of tips and help figuring things out. We played for a good while, and got to my original MH nemesis; Diablos, whom we overcame after I probably carted to the thing a million times. After a long time, and maybe a whole days worth of hunting, we went our separate ways. Since then, I've pretty made it a mission of mine to be as cool of a guy as him, helping out anyone I can, and teaching new players the ropes. My first experience with the community of MH was a great one, and I want to help the new players feel like there's always someone there to help them learn, and tackle those challenges. Happy hunting~

    That's the best part of monster hunter, helping other hunters. I've got a few friends who never played before World. I'm having a blast coaching them through a fight or what items to take. Now it's turned into every night getting on with wanna farm this monster or I need to collect some items to make consumables. I started years ago, I played the PSP version didn't get far because I didn't understand it. A buddy I was in the military with asked if I wanted to play, explained I didn't get far or understand it. He showed me the ins and outs, MH has become my favorite series, now I choose to do the same in hopes of other people having that same reaction I did years ago.

    What i've loved about the monster hunter series is the detail the devs put into the monster's behavior. Monsters feel unique because the devs took the time to emulate what would these creatures do in their habitats. I'll give you a for instance. Rathian is defensive while Rathalos is predatory. Rathian will defend her clutch of eggs while Rathalos will defend his mate. This is why Rathian comes after you in the Wyvern Egg gather missions. Yes, it's part of the encounter meant to make the egg fetch quest more challenging, but it would make sense that a nesting mother would protect her nest. So this behavior is consistent with Rathian throughout the series. If you find her nest, you will always be able to track her back to it, and disturbing her nest will always call the Rathian too you. And she will be pissed. This behavior continues because once you've unlocked Rathalos, he will come to defend his mate, so if you attack the Rathian, and pose enough of a threat, she'll call out to Rathalos. It's this attention to detail that makes the Monster Hunter universe of games, breathing words.

    Jake Cruz I understand that, hence why he’s a lion, and why he has a “reign of fire” or whatever. But his gear isn’t even good regal gear, hell Anjanath Gear is a cooler Knight then his. The problem is that instead of making the gear a flashy lion designed regal king gear, they made it some goofy Minty Python and the Holy Grail Knight in stupid armor. He waist armor makes the set look ridiculous, I get that it’s for horse riding or whatever so they have to build he armor out to accommodate the thighs when riding a horse. There isn’t even any lion fur or imagery to signify that it is Telstra gear instead of some random Damascus or something. I get the idea, but in my opinion it just looks stupid. I’m not huge on Kushala Daora Gear either. Atleast his looks like they tried to make it look regal enough? Too bad the set bonus sucks :\

I get that Teostra is supposed to have Gear/Knight themed gear, it doesn’t change the fact that the chosen design and style was a disappointment to me. I’m not saying Teostra gear shouldn’t be that, since I get that it always has and I don’t think they should change a theme that’s been in the series for a while, but personally I don’t like the armor at all. Especially compared to Xeno or Vaal gear. The Teostra weapons are cool atleast.

    Greatly appreciate and impressed by how you find ways to make each review unique in its tone, through your writing, editing and directing. This one has quite a bit of light, almost goofy comedy (like the puns), and some of the editing has a similar feel (like the lord of the ring flies) where your Wolfenstein vid borrowed some of that electric Tarentino pacing and drama. And the Destiny 2 video was serious and somber. Each marries well with the content you are covering and makes me feel like each video is a new discovery. I wouldn’t feel that if you stuck to just one recipe, like ACG for example (whom I really like for different reasons).

    Interested to hear your thoughts about Iceborne, now that it has reached it's final title update. Either way, awesome review!

    When it comes to weapon design the Longsword is fucking amazing. With the changes they made to it's mechanics you feel lile a master samurai when you master them. Being able to dodge attacks with an attack and the epic Draw strike just feel so good when your weaving the combos together.

    While the big ass swords(GS and LS) is cool I still think Charge Blade is the PEAK WEAPON DESIGN. THE IMPACT, THE MECHANICS, THE COOL ASS MOVESET, COOL ASS DESIGN DAAAAAAAANNNNNNGGG Sorry I just got excited

    Makes a point of establishing that the plural of "festoon" is "festoonery". 10 seconds later - "those things are festoons" /facepalm

    Just want to point out that both are valid, just like person, persons, and people. he's referring to multiple individual festoons instead of an arrangement which would be festoonery.
