yes, so far the only constant bug I have encountered is that horse started throwing me off outside of combat AFTER i took the jockey perk, while it was never an issue before. making me regret taking that perk... (if it aren't a problem, don't fix it...) other than that, one CTD and sometimes sound going out. as for saves, after I learned alchemy, it never was a issue. spent a good part of a day in game time and made at least 40 of them...

if you consider NieR: Automata an RPG, for me it has to take the top spot. firstly, because it is a goddamn masterpiece, but also importantly because i played it during a pretty dark time in my own life so its message really, really resonated within me.

I've actually had trouble applying COMMON SENSE while playing, due to 20+ years of playing normal video games. I've missed out on countless ingenious solutions to quests and encounters because I couldn't think out of the box. I've run out of time on quests because it never crossed my mind that they won't wait forever for me to finish them. The 'analogue' experience is such a perfect metaphor. This is where I think this game really shines. It pushes the systemic, immersive sim to the limits and beyond. It really struggles while doing it, but I can forgive that, because of how far beyond the constraints of most games it has travelled.

This. If I had a nickel for every time I finished a quest... then Googled the quest... and find out that there were usually at least 3 other ways to complete or fail specific parts of the quest, that were usually much more interesting than the way I completed it.

But did they fix the atrocious combat? They built the combat based on HEMA duels. Duels. One versus one. It does kinda work in that setting. It absolutely does not, and shouldn't be able to, work in any other setting. They focused so much on getting the moves right, they never figured out how people actually fight, and what is actually important - control of distance and time. Now, it is just a mindless quicktime event in duels (once you learn the system), and atrocious in encounters with more than you and one enemy. I don't think it is possible to "fix" the combat. It is a design decision, not a bug. I hope the sequel will have combat that is better suited to non-duels. But this game is terrible at it

i just completed Kingdom Come: Deliverance and can honestly say that, based on my playthrough, all the gamebreaking bugs have been fixed as of Dec 2018. at any rate, i encountered precisely zero, nor did the game CTD once. i can highly recommend the game in its current state. (Edit: to be fair i too found myself cheesing most 3:1 fights, and backstabbing enemies en mass during battles. by late game i was also able to maintain implausible levels of stealth while wearing full plate armour. all of these things were slightly disappointing, but not enough to ruin the overall experience. btw, Ulrich, an aging German veteran, is almost certainly the most skilled opponent in the game, so it makes sense that he parries like a boss and only master strikes can get through his guard Edit2: i never had to fight the three bandits in the swamp after completing the Monastery. i was able to convince them i'd killed Pious, although in actual fact, we had colluded in faking his death, and escaped together).

That might sound idiotic of me, but this review made me buy the game. I was completely ignoring it until watching this video. I do not expect a good experience, I do not expect a finished product, I feel like this is very much so an Early Access game in is current state and will give me frustration. It is what they aimed to accomplish, the style and the type of game they are making that we almost don't see at all now a days that convinced me to put my money into this. I want to encourage a studio like theirs, they started from nothing and build this game. If they are financially successful, I do honestly hope they would deliver many more awesome games in the future. And now, i'm getting ready for the frustration and awesomeness of playing this game. They aimed a bit too high in my opinion. But I bought it anyway better put my money into this than a generic shooter.

@@pjishomo that's unfortunate. Maybe some of the patches has fixed that problem? I had a few minor ones like in a fist fighting mission, the guy wouldn't enter the arena to fight. I had another issue near the start when learning to sword fight but I think that was fixed with a reload. There was another mission that I had to go back to a previous save a few hours back and play from there. Something to do with order of quest stopping an NPC from appearing. There wasn't anything that I came across that really ruined it or made it difficult for me to progress with. I've never been so sad to finish a game!

I played the game with patch 1.25 and finished it with 1.32. And yes. I mean FINISHED IT. I completed everything. All the side missions, all the activities (those that could be completed). I've encountered some bugs. None were game breaking. The fighting system took time to get used to. I also built my character around speechcraft and charisma, but that didn't make me squishy. I practiced in Rattay arena and got better at swordfighting, defense, warfare, strength and agility. Also, I started all my fights with the bow. The big battles felt clunky indeed, but the rest of them fights (against 2-4 enemies), though difficult were actually enjoyable and gave a a feeling of satisfaction at the end. Warhorse still has lots of things to fix, but all in all thay did an amazing job. KCD was the best surprise I've had in years.

we did not play the same game; i specced into combat, which started out really difficult, but i fought (literally) through it all until around the point where i unlocked most sword perks. now i've spent most of my time riding my horse looking for bandits, cumans, wayfaring knights or desperate farmers just to experience the combat. i reached a point where i one shot anyone whos not cosplaying a modern tank equipped with the highest tech present in the year 2018. parrying works for me, making or closing space works, fighting multiple enemies is made easy by a couple of perks, cheesing does not involve exploiting bugs. When im forced to cheese (i wont deny that part) i simply mount my horse and shoot arrows. im not sure how far into the main story i am, but i know i havent gotten far, still i have grinded the map to the point where i have over 21k silver in my pocket. despite my own pleasant experience with the game so far, i've encountered a lot of bugs, one of which corrupted my save, but i later found a work around. the point remains that in the current state, this game isnt worth it, but it will be in a few months. 8/10 its a breath of fresh air

I think Skill-up's issue is a lack of understanding of some mechanics, which the game doesn't explain all that well sometimes. Clinching requires you to press keys to win a clinch, plus the perk that makes it easier. He didn't know the controls for switching targets, which is a bit unintuitive but still works fine(shift). The lock picking I had to go to youtube to find a proper tutorial, now it's super easy, I actually prefer it to other game's ideas of lock opening minigames. Henry isn't supposed to be some 1 vs 3 god, you're meant to incorporate tactics into a fight in the early game, night cover, poison, knock outs/stealth kills. Later on you can comfortably brute force camps of bandits or cowar-... cumans, btw that Cuman Killer perk is overkill(How the Cumans know I've slaughtered so many of them I have no idea, they never escape, who tells the fucking stories!?). I whole heartedly disagree with the 'don't buy' verdict I keep seeing all over. This game is a bit buggy, yes, but it's fully playable and enjoyable. Buying the game shows interest in their product, bug reports/forums are where you tackle the issue of bugginess, and if they never get resolved, sequels/expansions are where you hold onto your cash and wait to see if they learned the bug lesson.

My first bandit camp I had no chance at all, didn't even do the training fights that give you the ability to dodge / parry / combo. What did I do? I waited till night. Ambushed one of the bandits on patrol duty and chocked him, carried him away from the camp where I killed him with my sword (didn't have stealth kill). Did the same to the other guard on patrol. 3 enemies left which where sleeping. Chocking one would be too loud and wake up the others so I only knocked the boss out and was left with two bowmen who where relatively easy to kill and murdered the boss while he was unconscious. Either you open up with stealth or you train bow and open up with range. What's left you should be able to kill in melee. Or just run away and come back to open up with bow / stealth again. One thing the game is really bad at is telling you that you need to train sword fighting with Ser Bernard (?) to unlock skills you need in a fight... took me a while.

This is one of the most memorable experiences in gaming I have experienced so far. Yes, even after the bugs I got frustrated with some aspects of the game and yet, so much of it is so well done and the story and world are so excellently written and presented to the player. In my opinion, this is one of the most fantastic rpgs to ever be released. No, it is not the best however it is one of the most unique. I have never played a game like Kingdom Come Deliverance, there is no other game that even comes close to delivering even a similar experience to the one that this game does. I think anyone with even a slight interest in this game absolutely has to try it.

As a sound engineer I can tell you without any doubt that vinyl is not of a higher quality sound than digital. It is different yes, but better quality? No. In fact the highest quality sound recordings : wavs, are digital in format. Vinyl has a certain colouring it adds to everything it plays which some people prefer. If one was to select high quality streaming from Spotify which plays songs at 256kbit/s it will contain equal if not more information than any vinyl record.

Excellent, a sound engineer! Just who I'm looking for. I am a biomedical engineer myself. I was under the impression that all digital recording (even .wav that are supposed to be 'loss-less') formats had a fixed sampling rate that meant the output could only ever be approximation of the original input. I thought the better quality with digital recordings was due to the linear frequency response that can only be achieved with digital formats. So Id like to ask, how it can a digital recording contain equal or more information than an analog recording?

  • @peterjones1506

    @peterjones1506

    6 жыл бұрын

That's correct but the average wav is output at 44.1Khz sample rate and that's on the lower side of average. You're correct in that you can't possibly go above the original input but the input during recoding is usually of very high quality. When these files are turned into mp3's and the like they lose a lot of information. To answer your question it's to do with the medium you're actually recording onto. Vinyl cannot store the same amount of information as a wav, therefore the recording, digital or analog will lose information as it is converted to vinyl.

The combat system isn't broken, it's just unexplained. The sad reality is, if you eventually max out your combat stats, enemies no longer perma parry every attack you make, and you can absolutely do things to mitigate them parrying every move you make. The game never explains that there is an actual level gate here beyond just in-game RP reasons. The NPCs will tell you that you shouldn't go to some places or do some things because they are too dangerous. What they do not tell you is "if you go to this area, you're gonna get destroyed because you are underlevelled". The overall combat level, defense level and weapon level as well as your warfare skill level makes a huge difference in overall combat. Beyond that, enemies don't have perfect control over distance, they don't grapple and throw you away as soon as you get too close, it's a game mechanic that you are a participant of. It's a hidden mash QTE that, admittedly, is not explained, but if you spam attack while the animation plays once you get close to the enemy, you will be the one who throws the enemy, staggers them, and you will get a free hit as a reward. 3 on 1 fights are supposed to be hard and you are supposed to try and cheese them. Once you are in the mid to end game, you can absolutely survive them and fight through them without cheese and there is bug cheese and also in game mechanics cheese. This combat is phenomenal when it is at its peak. It's biggest sin is that it doesn't explain itself fully to the player unless you read up on it, and it doesn't clarify that it is BOTH, based on your personal skill and ability AND hidden stat checks. Once you know all there is to know and get a hang of it, it's one of the best combat systems I've seen in a game. There are a few things I don't love about it but, luckily, all of them can be fixed with a few monds. To anyone interested, I highly recommend removing slow motion from parry. It makes the combat a lot faster paced, a littl ebit more difficult but also feels soooooo much cooler and satisfying. I don't understand the slow motion. It doesn't help you in any way because the parry window doesn't fall into it, all it does is slow down an animation during which you have no control until it stops playing, effectively just prolonging the small moment where you have to watch a mini cutscene. It's a bit pointless and when it activates every second in a chain of parries and counter parries, it really starts to drag on.

There's so many games that people shit on, that if it came out with a different name, or from a different company, people would probably have liked it way more. Like Andromeda for example. It's not a bad game. It's a bit janky, but it's still a decent game. It's just a bad Mass Effect game. And that's what people judge it on. If Andromeda came out as just a generic space game, but was otherwise identical, I guarantee it would have got better reviews and more people would have played it.

I'm approaching 500 hours and can safely say that I've never enjoyed a 'game' so much in my entire life. It's a beautiful, jaw dropping masterpiece. For the sake of fairness play the game in its current state. Additionally, if you only played three weeks you really didn't play all that much. You never spent entire afternoons exploring the woods and hidden paths. You haven't done the DLC's. It's been a year and change since this game was released and warhorse in the last few days has released its final DLC. Following the release of new content, it has been a typical warhorse launch of new content. Riddled with bugs and unexpected crashes, but It's pleasantly surprising seeing the old content and where it's progressed to. The combat in this game is genuinely hard and one of the best systems I've used and does depict realism. First off fighting multiple enemies you need to handle similar to how you would in real life, by fighting on the back foot. This means slowly walking away to funnel your targets into you. As for the Parry system, you need to look into the history of chivalrous fighting. One of the key concepts in HEMA(Historical European Martial Arts) is having such a pristine defense that you are as difficult to his as possible. The reason for this is because with melee weapons if you fight without the worry of being hit, often even if you win a fight you're mortally wounded in the process. It's not just about winning the fight but winning it in a favorable condition. The difficulty of the parry comes from watching your opponents movements as it does in real life. Anticipating the strike correctly based on the movement of the body, not a special parry marker. I do not recommend using Sword and Board in this game as it is slow and insanely boring. The developers worked with HEMA experts and focused primarily on the combat with longswords and it definitely stands out. Also you cant expect to strike quickly when holding a heavy shield in addition to your short sword. Weight calculates into agility and a shield slows you down, even in this game, substantially. As you progress through the levels you have a higher probability of successfully parrying as well. The level system is designed to make you feel like you can bearly hold a sword. The lock on system can be annoying, but if you are observing enemies you can parry enemies that you're not locked onto which locked onto another target. Finally, in closing this topic, I believe this combat system is substantially better than Assasins Creed or Witcher, and more favorably depicts what Life is Feudal wanted to do but failed horrendously. It is difficult not because of the progression system, but because it forces you to observe your opponent accurately and handle situations similar to how you would actually handle them. As for the save complaint... Alchemy is a skill and it's worth leveling..... I've done 2 playthroughs of this game Once and launch where like many I didn't make it through the whole game because of bugs, but more recently a playthrough just last week. While warhorse has not fixed every bug, they have done an outstanding job of working down the list. In my opinion, I would say all game-breaking bugs have been fixed and 90% of the other bugs have been as well, and with that being accomplished and can safely say that this RPG is not one of but the best RPG I've played in years. Not only does it stay true to its historically accurate roots, but the plot and dialogue feel natural. The mechanics are difficult still; however they are polished and function as intended and new DLC content, after adequate patching truly expands this game to incorporate a great addition onto the already fantastic story. Within 3 days of completing the normal playthrough, I started and am working on a hard mode playthrough which is also completely playable. The point being, while this game had a very rocky start, Warhorse has stayed true to making this a great game. They've polished it to standards that not even AAA companies do these days. 1 year after release this game not only deserves but demands another look.

The complex ideas you present are difficult to convey and, if done without great skill and care, risk misunderstanding and backlash, especially in the typical KZread comment section. I don’t comment on internet often, but am moved to again and again by your work, out of respect. Thank you. It is an honor to support your work and having a small part of responsibility for bringing it to life.

I really feel like this game needs an updated review - it's truly a step forward in videogame making, and has been enormously improved since release... Please help encourage developers to keep making games like this Skill Up - I implore you - you have a big voice in the industry, so I'm sure it will be heard if you say it :) we need a game like this for every God of War and Evil West type game out there - it brings so many new people into the world of videogames - myself very much included. The voice acting in this game, the emersion, its historical accuracy, and mechanics - this game deserves multiple awards just for the ambition, let alone the execution...

Personally, I disagree with the review with this game, as far as the "don't buy" is concerned. First, the combat. You aren't told anything, because it's supposed to be the life of Henry. Nobody respects him, he's disregarded by a lot of people, he doesn't know how to swing a sword or shoot a bow, all he knows is how to run a forge in his little home town. He doesn't even know how to read! And that's one of the things that makes this game special to me. You ARE on your own for most of the game and it's up to you to seek out the skills you need to achieve the goal you've set for yourself. I had no issues with combat unless it was terrain getting in the way, and once I learned to spec into mace's, the game became so much better in the combat aspect because I could give them a nice meaty whack on the head and watch them crumple like a wad of paper. The story, imo, does lack a little. It's a good plot, and is engaging, but it's execution leaves something to be desired at moments. The bugs aren't or at least weren't as bad for me as everyone says they were, I only experienced sparse crashing because. It was easy to save every 15-30 minutes, especially once I learned to read and got into alchemy. And I haven't played the game in 3-4 months, so many of the bugs may have been fixed. The world is beautifully immersive and is wonderful to experience and enjoy with the funnier characters (I'm talking about you, priest), and the need for food and sleep made the world feel alive, because finding some dried meats on a body was at times better than finding their coin purse! Combat too is meaty and was satisfying to crush opponents under your heel when you got better at the game, and was even more so when I was at a low level and hardly managed to survive in a fight. I also liked how you could see your legs and hands, something you don't see in many games anymore, and how you reached out to pick things up. 8/10 from me, it was a beautiful breath of fresh air that tickled my pickle to the highest degree. And just to think, for a small Dev team's first game, it is amazing to think of what is to come in the future from the people now that theyre more experienced. Please give the game a try, if only to bless the wonderful bohemian men and women who made this game with a few groschen. :)

9:05 that entire theory goes out the window when you invest in good studio grade headphones. Analog isn't better. Vinyl is coming back because of nostalgia, not quality. Tho there is a unique sound to it, it sounds warmer than clean audio, but it isn't better than clean audio. Clean audio is exactly as it was recorded, exactly as you are intended to hear it. It's a common meme and something for audiophiles to get into that provides another route for music to earn recompense vs. the almost free lack of payment most musicians receive from labels these days. There is definitely a satisfying tactile advantage to big vinyl and the sleeve art. I remember reading about an experiment where it was determined that people preferred the vinyl to the digitally clean versions, but they liked just as much the digital clean version after they added subtle vinyl noise to it. Apparently there is something preferable to that background campfire-like subtle noise in the way we perceive music (a lower resolution digital sampling or lower mp3 style compression is a different issue).

After you practice with a character called bernard, which is optional and requires you to intentionally explore in game options and find him, you learn about in-game combat mechanics, i think Skill Up totally misses this and therefore misunderstand combat altogether. No offense to him but through the video, he said he kept being parry while attacking and defending is the best option, not true at all, i find myself free to attack and fight multiple opponents(although hard, as it should be) without the restraints he mentioned with in-game combat techniques like feints, etc.(dont want to say to much cause spoilers) but i think Skill Up clearly misses this by not practicing with bernard with weapons, bare-handed combat etc... Nor revisiting him and just keep playing the main story without actually exploring the game world. @DocPenguinMD6 жыл бұрын

Thanks for your review! You mentioned you didn't spec much into combat - going for high charisma and speech build. I'm really curious as to what your Warfare/Defense stats were when you struggled with combat. I agree saying the combat system is bullshit, not for the jank but because it's still determined by RPG levels more than player skill. The warfare statblock says that the higher it is, the faster you can attack AND the harder it is for opponents to block you. At level 1, you're sweating bullets but by level 15 or 20 you just overpower your enemy's "parry proficiency" and hack them to death. Defense is the same thing except for parrying - the higher it is, the longer of a window you get for a perfect block/dodge. It basically turns to press Q/Block to win. I thought you'd talk about the hours worth of grinding with Bernard the Trainer. I spent my first 10 - 15 hours just training swords with Bernard until I was a god. It was boring but if my Henry was going to die in combat, Henry was going to die a professional. As for targeting - I'm amazed you used mouse and keyboard for melee. I found it absolutely awful. I swapped to a controller for melee and M&KB for bow. In melee, I made use of "Lock on Opponent". When the 6 radial pops up on target for melee, you're not fully "locked" on target, if you physically turn away you break off. If you "Lock on opponent" a circle appears you'll focus only on that opponent. You're right, you'll be walking backwards a lot when out numbered - but only to keep the enemy from surrounding you. If there were 2 targets - I would Lock on Opponent the closest target and engage him first. The moment the 2nd target comes closer, I would break my current "Lock on Opponent", turn towards Target 2 and lock onto him. With high warfare/defense - they usually die. I butchered Pribyslavitz during the scouting phase (before the battle). I hope you'll go back to train with Bernard in Rattay and look at combat again. Because by the end game, combat oriented Henrys just laugh at most opponents. The game does force you to fight at certain points and going by your review - was super frustrating. There's a lot of combat in KCD and having a Henry not proficient in combat is going to be rough most of the time.

  • @gnomercy1

I'd like to respectfully disagree on some points concerning Bethesda, specially about what they have the "courage" to put out. I think it's seeing it the wrong way. It's not about courage, it's about targeting an audience. Bethesda targets the largest possible audience and thus things like the save system is not made out of laziness or out of courage for something that enforces immersion, but a deliberate necessity to accommodate as many players with different play styles, play schedules and real life interruptions as possible. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a game targeting a specific type of gamer, not a mainstream audience, so it's a bit comparing apples and oranges, even though both are open world RPGs. So in the end, I think you're being too subjective when judging Bethesda for lacking courage. It's just too different an intention behind the product. Otherwise, great review, thank you for making this.

Hi Skill Up, I`m going to take a page out of your own book and review the reviewer. I`m glad you highlighted the importance of context in viewing things and this certainly applies to you. In the mass drudgery of reviewers among the mass media and simple youtubers, your critiques and assessments of the games you play are far and beyond the simple, I recommend/this game sucks/8 out of 10!/buy it nao, reviews of everyone else. Totalbiscuit is the closest reviewer, that I know, who will take a more in-depth look at not just the game but the circumstances beyond, though he is far worse in his favoritism and letting his lack of game skills make a hasty judgement of a game. That`s not to say that you don`t have your faults either. Case in fact, and don`t get me wrong I love vinyl. I prefer it over other forms of music, other than a live performance, but it is definitely not better audio quality than a digital track. Get yourself some studio grade headphones and you can tell the difference. Still I think, that like me, you prefer the more handcrafted feel to the music that speaks to the soul rather than what a digital track provides. So you definitely have some mishaps in your facts sometimes but it most certainly does not negate the excellence your script provides us in telling the story of your journeys through playing a certain game. For most people playing a game is as simple as, do I enjoy it?, do I hate it? etc. and reviewers take those views, and only those views, to their review. You provide, and deliver excellently, a more over encompassing take of what makes these games a worthwhile medium to invest so much money and time into, making it beyond just simple entertainment. I had seen a few other reviews of this game and wrote it completely off as a cheaper copycat version of the Elder Scroll games that had a lot of bugs. But you gave light to the game proper and now I definitely will keep it in memory for the future. Thank you for your insights and work you put into these videos. I hope bigger successes come forth for you in the future.

This is funny, just as you uploaded your review of KCD, AJ uploaded his, and you can see the gap on quality and dedication, I am glad that you are now my Go To reviewer, someone conscious and dedicated that understands the importance of more factors around the game and how to diagnose if it will be worth it in the long run

Starting this game in Jan 2019 I am 40 hours in and have experienced no major bugs so far. The advice to wait before purchasing was sound. Love the game!!

Always love your in depth videos, might be worth doing "sort review" options for some of your viewers to enjoy > 45 minutes bit long > I watch 90% of your content Skillup however these movie length game reviews are crazy!!!

Don’t care what anyone else says, I love and appreciate these reviews. Thanks for the review Ralph. Hope this game inspires Devs like Bethesda to embrace their RPG roots.

To all the audiophiles. Skillup isn’t saying it’s a better sound, he’s saying it is a unique analogue sound that appeals to many people. Perfection isn’t always good. Otherwise people wouldn’t buy old classic cars. It’s often about the organic or physical nature, feel look or sound of the object that you connect to emotionally.

Fk this is the most immersive game review I’ve seen. Yep, that’s how I’m gonna put it. There is such a thing as “immersion” even in reviews. How the hell have i missed this channel all this while? Subbed.

hey Skillup, nice job on this one. Shows how going full time has really allowed you to produce content to the best of your ability. Any chance of doing an update with the state of play in 2021?

I’d be interested to hear your opinion of the game now that all the patching and dlc is finished. For myself, it’s the best RPG I’ve played since Skyrim.

This would be a great opportunity for a follow up review since the releases of fixes and DLC. If you do them.

60 hours in game, I was on horse galloping at high speed, I entered the monastery through the little left gate (is like a tunel), not the big one, bashed my head in a stone ledge and fell off my horse. It was mindfuck. Developers thought about this. And the clunkyness of Henry in combat reminded me of Gothic 1 Nameless Hero, who was using one-handed weapons with two hands:)) Is the perfect combination of Bethesda Morrowind open world, Oblivion mechanics and Piranha Bytes Gothic handcraft and immersion. Nice review !

Man some solid videos you're doing. Respect to that! I really enjoyed this game and personally I experienced a lot less 'game breaking bugs'. For me the biggest technical issue was the slow texture loading in cutscenes. Or in any situation. And the general lack of optimization. Absolutely agree about the combat system about facing multiple opponents.

2021 and this has become a favorite because of the great descriptions you described. I can't stand the hand holding in games today or the overly simple systems that make it so you can't even fail then learn from it.
