Metro Exodus - The Review (2019)

Ойындар

Metro Exodus feels like a game made for our times; recognizing the dearth of single player, narrative shooters and delivering something sorely needed. Despite its rough edges, Metro Exodus is a tour de force of atmosphere, story-telling and world design. It is absolutely brilliant, and totally unmissable if you like games in this genre.

Not every game needs to feel the same. Metro's feel is what makes it unique and rather gritty. I don't think because it's heavy movement means it's "clunky" I disagree, and I've always loved Metro's gameplay cause of it's weapons mechanics, guns jamming and needing to unjam them

Is it weird that I love the clumsiness of the combat in the metro games? I almost think that if metro had really polished gunplay like Doom or Halo, it would take away from why I enjoy the games. There's something oddly satisfying about taking on some monstrosity or gang of thugs using a dirty rusting piece of shit gun that feels like it's about to fall apart at any moment. It adds to the tension knowing that you can't flick shot in a moments notice, that the recoil will waste your precious ammo, and that your weapon will jam if you don't maintain it. While other games offer a power fantasy, metro is the complete opposite. You move slow, the weapons recoil hard, and supplies are scarce. Combat encounters are tough because at the back of your mind, you realize that you're burning valuable resources. The Metro games can be genuinely uncomfortable to play at times, but I think that's the point. I think the lack of polished shooting mechanics is a choice by design, not the developers incompetence. This is why I think that the metro games never really garnered as much hype around them, since ultimately, they appeal to a very niche type of gamer who wants an experience to be as engaging as possible, even if it means sacrificing fun factor. You won't always have fun playing Exodus, but you will undoubtedly be enthralled for every second. This is a game where finding a room with 5 mushrooms will make you sigh with relief since you can finally craft a new medkit. It isn't fun to watch your last minute of air counting down and realizing you need to sacrifice your next medkit to breathe, but damn if it isn't engaging as hell. While some people would hate this kind of gameplay, me and other masochistic minded players love this shit to death. I only play the game on Ranger Hardcore, and no matter how many times it pushes my face in the mud, I still stand back up and try again. Loved the game to death, best game of 2019 for me so far (although Artyom really needs to fucking speak one of these days.)

Maybe it's just cause I've played bethesda games like fallout but the shooting in metro always felt adequate for the job. I just don't like the "seams" in enemy animations. Some enemies snap between poses and states, they seem to have a very annoying habit of doing so right as I pull the trigger while aiming at their head. That's the only reason the humanimals are a challenge to kill is because they snap between standing and crouching immediately.

  • @craigkingdon4424

I've always seen metro as a sort of love letter to the resilience of the Russian people. The Politics of the situation was never important in the games. We don't find out in the games who dropped the nukes, or why they were dropped in the first place. Instead it focuses on the people, good and bad, and how they survive, despite everything thrown at them. I find it incredibly compelling.

22:39 to this point, i have the impression you may be referring to the revolver. If you are using either double action cylinder (the 6-shot or the 8-shot) then there is a significant delay after pulling the trigger for your first shot. This is accurate to real life as double action revolvers have heavier and longer trigger pulls that make it take longer overall to pull the trigger. If you want to be snappy and precise (especially for long range and stealth) use the single 3-shot or single action 6-shot. useful tip if you do another playthrough.

I think there's also some kind of issue you have to fix in the cfg, I don't recall what it was at this exact moment but fixing in in the config files made mouse movement and gunplay much more snappy. It's subtle enough that you might not notice it as an issue to fix, hell, I just thought it was a little janky my first playthrough.

The best part about this game is that the small decisions you make (lethal or non-lethal, raising your weapon towards someone or keeping it holstered) all change the way the NPCs (not just your crew) interact with you. The scene in the treehouse at 6:37 can go multiple different ways depending on your actions leading up to this scene. It's a masterfully crafted work of art.

I agree that Artyoum being a silent protagonist could be a bit deficiency to the game since this game itself is more focused on atmosphere and story-telling, but for me personally i still like the way Artyoum doesn't talk and strange enough i actually could imagine his personality through it, it's like the developer trying to capture if Artyoum is the player so that's why they still kept left him without a voice and let ourselves imagine it with our imagination or through the personality from the books. And also the big plus of this game for me is the the side casts, like Anna and Spartan Squad, they are the reason why this game is being my favorite game this year so far..

Sorry but arent upgrades like the helmet upgrade, the carry capacity upgrade, the light upgrade actually only available if you explore optional areas? I really think so. This contradicts the fact that you say that optional locations and missions don't reward you eith anything and you still get everything if you just play the main story. Btw I am not complaining about the game here, cause I really like that if you explore and do optional stuff you actually get a significant reward for it

The metro games are all about rewarding exploration. Sure, you can play the game as Skill Up did and run through it. I really don't like that method for Metro. I don't think he ever realized how slow the game can be played or how tense it can get. I once mistimed moving up on the last pirate section in the 3rd map on ranger hardcore (A playthrough I recommend everyone do at least once. Yeah, its the meme difficulty, but there is a reason for that. Explained later) with a bullet in my arm and only 1 medkit left without enough materials for a second one. I sat there for over 3 realtime hours waiting for night. The worst part was I had picked the only location that gave me enough cover to be safe from all angles, but sat in the middle of 2 guard sight cones. After a while, they would stop looking for me, but if I moved, they would immediately see me and shoot. It was the videogame equivalent of huddling behind a rock and praying for the people watching me to lose interest and go away. Eventually night fell, and I gained enough control over the engagement for me to move forwards. Ranger hardcore has been seen as the meme difficulty since the original release of Metro. It always gave you just enough to get by, never more. Metro 2033's original steam release was the only exception. You could pick up the hellbreath railgun early and ride that shit through the game until you hit Andrew's apartment where an arsenal that could see you through to the end of the game was laid out, including a second hellbreath. Sell everything, get rich, move on to the rest of the game with the exact weapons you wanted (my choice was always a suppressed rifle and the second hellbreath) with over 200 military grade rounds to spare for upgrades later on. Metro Redux took that out and it was back to just enough to get by. My least favorite thing about the new system was the spare ammo cap. 150 rifle rounds, 80 9mm bbs, I never used shotguns, so never paid attention to how much shotgun ammo you could hold. Metro 2033 original had no spare ammo cap. You could turn that 200 MGR that I mentioned into 600 rifle rounds and shoot through the entire game. Now its time to talk about exodus. In this video, you can see Skill Up is low on ammo frequently. On ranger hardcore, I usually had more ammo than that for 2 reasons. 1st, every bullet you miss, you might need in 5 minutes. 2nd, every bullet can score a kill shot on most enemies with 1 shot. Let me say that in a different way, I take fewer shots to kill enemies on a higher difficulty than at a lower one. In the metro games, ranger hardcore highlights the craftsmanship that goes into the metro games. Sure, some of the locations have a few hitboxes out of whack. Sure, some of the enemies are more tanky than others. But when you play on ranger hardcore, you have to listen to everything. Listen to every sound, pay attention to movement in every shadow, and keep your weapons silent. You move at night, because a sniper can 2-shot you in day time. You watch for the animals that cross your path and hide from them where possible. Some won't attack. Some will. The difference is where you are and how you act. My memorable moments: 3 watchmen taking shelter from a storm I didn't have to hide from. I could safely jog past them. Hiding under the bridge Skill Up mentioned in his review from a gargoyle, only to be joined by 2 watchmen who were busy chasing a demon off a baby. Everything involving the spiders. Fuck the spiders. I hate them. They scare the crap out of me every playthrough, even after knowing that the flame rounds can penetrate the outer carapace. I am so used to keeping in the dark, sneaking around and hiding, and here come a ton of creepy crawlies, that not only ignore my efforts, but do it better, and force me to do the opposite. Every time I go down there, I get that sense of dread, and every time I get back up, the relief is massive. Now, the thing that not enough people talk about, or even notice. Hitboxes. The hitboxes in Exodus and the metro games in general, at least where it comes to enemies, are tight. Very tight. Incredibly tight. My biggest mindblowing incident was in Metro Last light when I put a shot through the visor of a Communist armored faceplate. Any other location on the plate and it would have taken the plate off without killing him. The visor, my bullet punched through. This was relevant because he was the first enemy in that engagement that I had to face and he already knew I was there. I had maybe 3 seconds to kill him before he alerted the rest of the group. I spun and fired 3 shots while turning on full automatic in pure desperation. The second round punched through his visor while the other 2 hit the wall on either side. I didn't even know what had happened at first until I used my nightvision to check his corpse. He had 1 bullet hole in the dead center of his visor. An inch higher or lower and no kill. I tried this before and since on other enemies. A shot to an armored mask blows off the mask. A shot to a separate piece of armor removes that piece of armor. Valid sniping targets are unarmored heads, the faces of helmeted enemies, the visors and throats of armored enemies, which leads to my second biggest mindblowing incident. In the second world of exodus, there are a couple of encounters with armored enemies. The first one you fight (in my playthrough that is) is standing in a room with 2 slaves (I wanted the good ending so kill no slaves) so no grenades or mindless spraying. I had to be careful. About 20 approaches to that room later, I was about done. On ranger hardcore, its hard to go through those guys without grenades. I lost count of the deaths. So, pissed off, upset, and ready to quit for the day, I opened the door, stepped forwards, raised my revolver, and shot him in the throat. One shot. An enemy that I had sprayed at on full auto with my AK. It was just that fast. I didn't even register it at first. I let go of my mouse and waited to die. Then he fell over. I grabbed my mouse, stepped forwards and looked at him, then paused my game and aimlessly wandered for a while. Around 20 tries and around 20 failures, I had done it, and it only took 1 shot.

I got everything (equipment wise) my first play through and I never felt I went out of my way to collect it. Granted I was being rather exploratory but hey it's a big beautiful world. That being said I find most of the upgrades pretty useless. I can craft most stuff from my backpack so carrying more in most cases isn't a big deal. If you play stealthily you really don't need light and you find plenty of stuff. If you take an extra second to loot people you get tons of ammo too. I feel like you'd only have to do the collecting if you are playing combat style because then you will burn through resources fast enough to warrant carrying more or you may need a bigger stack of first aid kits etc.

I had no idea what it was except for the trailers I saw a couple years prior. I knew it was a FPS horror story game, and that's about it. Well, I played it. And I couldn't stop playing it. It was such a profoundly good experience for me. The story, gameplay, characters, set pieces, weapons, crafting, etc. It worked. I love it, and no I'm reading the books which are amazing as well! This game made me a Metro fan, and I'm playing everything I can of it. Going back to the previous games, despite the flaws, they are grounded in their universe, and I love it. I wanted to play more but there was no sequel announced and the game itself was on the discount shelf so my hope was lost. Until the announcement of last light. I was over the moon! I finally get more and in my opinion it was just as good as the first. Then there was this huge gap between last light to Exodus but when that announcement came you bet I was excited, and luckily I was able to preorder it on steam before it was taken down and I love the the game and I was very accepting to the more open approach to change things up and they made it work while still feeling like metro.

I know, I know, people have said it before, but... You know how to review games, touching them from every angle, pointing out the good game mechanics and how that connects the gamer to the game. Not shying away from the lesser bits either, how some parts may feel awkward or too time consuming (for a shooter, in this case). Always a fair balance. Also comparing a game to previous versions, or contemporary competitors. Even getting into the head of us, gamers - anticipating what the next section will feel like, the way gameplay changes during day/night cycles, that's what I'm looking for. You are able to translate what you felt while playing the game, into what info you give us while reviewing it, and that's great. Well put review :) One small thing though that you missed. There are vehicles in open places like the area where Silantis and his church was located in. You were supposed to move around with your boat. I can't imagine running around in that map because Artyom's poor stamina. There are probably 3-4 boats in the map that are docked in different key points. It's possible for you to get stuck in some places but if you plan properly you will always have at least one boat to use. Not to mention in the last level when you set out to find medicine for Anna, you start with a boat in an underground sewage system.

This is the best gaming journalism I have found yet and there is some cracking independent stuff out there these days. Your reviews are spot on (as far as the games I've played). Bravo Skill Up or should I say, good on ya mate. Metro is one of my favourite game series of all time. Any hope/chance that we can hear what you thought about Witcher 3 and Doom (2016) - two of my top games of recent years? Looking forward to your no spoiler Cyberpunk 2077 review someday!

Weapon animations and sound design were severely discredited and underplayed when so much care was put into them. I'm starting to think people whose default satisfying gunplay is Halo and alike, just don't appreciate more realistic guns and animations in games. Animations and gun sounds were phenomenal in this game.

It might just be me, but I think the best parts of the game were the interlude sections between the main chapters. Those little breaks in the action when you're on the train with your crew, with a guy playing guitar for the ambient music (STALKER SOC camp fire style), and the landscape zooming by on the outside. I often skip dialogue and cutscenes in games, but despite the long dialogue sequences in this one, never felt the urge to do that. I'm also pretty sure I stared out of the train window for a couple minutes trying to find where the landscape would 'loop'.

Due to upcoming shut down of "Blacklight: Retribution" and "Orcs Must Die! Unchained", I want to spread this message: "Stop killing online games. Give us server creation tools, so we could play them on our own". This is the killer for games having "Live service" model. They made them not being able to live, once they stop being being commercially viable, but it could've been solved if server emulator was given to us.

Thank you for another awesome review. I have to say that the cut scenes don't bother me, I quite enjoy them, in fact. But I do agree with the point that you bring up about Artom's silence/inability to speak within the game: I wish he had a way to participate and voice his thoughts and opinions in the otherwise really great and believable talks and discussions that his fellow travelers have at 'base' (the Aurora) or out in the field from time to time as well as when meeting strangers he has to interact with. And this is something I feel so much more because the other characters address Artyom and include him whenever talks among the crew occur - or "between" Artyom and Anna. There is one more thing, but it's a little tongue in cheek when I say this: Every time, in this game and in Last Light, that somebody makes a remark about how awesome I/Artyom am for having blown up the Dark Ones, I itch to tell them that I did _not_ blow the Dark Ones up and am glad that I didn't. I'm still early in the game at this point and am taking my time with it because I want to savor every moment of another of the Metro masterpieces. The Metro series is among my Top 5 favorite games of all time, and I love Exodus every bit as much as the other games. I suspect I might end up liking it even more due to the improvements on many levels that the developers have implemented. I trusted this company so much that I broke one of my principles and pre-ordered this game (it was still wrong, and it'll be no less wrong if (when, probably) I pre-order CD Project Red's "Cyberpunk 2077" too). I agree with what you pointed out concerning bugs in the game (except maybe for the "shrimps" who can still hit you with their spit when you're inside the workbench-hut by the waterline; perhaps this isn't a real bug but more of an overdone feature), but I'm optimistic and hope they will be patched. Thanks again. :) On a side note, I just had a big buggy situation. One of the humanoid enemies (16:25) in the game took all the bullets of my Tikhar gun, 10 melee attacks (which is usually enough to take them out), and (get this!) 20 AK rounds, and he still didn't die. Needless to say at this point I simply reloaded. It's a good idea to quick-save _often_ . Luckily this is faster and more easy to do than I remember having experienced in any other game I've played in the past.

This is what I appreciate you most for Ralph. You are capable of calling out devs and companies for questionable or downright slimy business practice (IE steam-gate in this case) but you do not let those actions of the outside world affect how you perceive the product. Laymen's portrayal of the previous issues was funny yet, still fair. When we move to your review of the game itself I only see your critiques for quantifiable game issues, not petty bullshit. Great stuff man!

I hit a manimal with my van. One went sailing clear across the screen. While Darmir and I were underground fighting off manimals, he shot one and, it sailed clear across the map. It is impossible to really stealth play. I always try to just knock people out when I'm playing so, I don't have to kill anyone. Since it is impossible to move the bodies, one is always found. This inevitably leads to a fire fight. I have had to restart the game multiple times. I've also had to uninstall and reinstall to get around some bugs. It is crazy.

Thank you. This is exactly the kind of review I've been waiting for. I have been on the fence about metro since it's release, however I was a massive fan of the first 2. I had many concerns about the open world clashing with their traditionally linear campaign design I was hoping to see in a sequel. I had this fear because, like you pointed out, it hasn't been achieved to any great success recently. I'll pick this game up when I have the cash. Cheers again for having such informed opinions! :)

It's refreshing to play a game that shows restraint and pays attention to detail, instead of just making a massive, procedurally-made open world filled with endless collectibles and generic objectives. It makes you appreciate and remember each location you encounter. Driving up to that sniper post in Caspian and slowly making my way through, hiding from the sniper shots behind cars, and then finally ascending to the top and switching roles to drive off newly-arrived bandits was a thrilling experience. On the other hand I can't remember a single outpost that I liberated in the new Far Cry game. Not that I dislike Far Cry, but it's a very 'by the numbers' game. Metro meanwhile feels handcrafted with love. Sometimes less is more.
