Monomachine Tutorial 02 - How Did I Make The FM Engine Sound Like That?
Hello everybody! After numerous comments about how I made the FM engine I’ve been using in many of my patches sound so chaotic, even before an arpeggiator and chorus were added, I decided to hunker down and figure out myself!
I discovered that much of the dynamics of the signal came from adjusting the second modulator’s feedback control, and when adjusted to high degrees it can offer eclectic sounds, even when playing just on one note. Near the end of the video I get a bit carried away with editing the filter but it’s hard not to get carried away with a device as complicated as this haha! Hope you all enjoy!

BRO OMFG part of me was like I can't believe I got that good of a sweet-spot with the filter and another was like shit maybe I shouldn't have given that patch away cuz damn if it doesn't sound good 😭😂
if you set a parameter lock on one step then hold that step down it'll show the numerical values for each parameter in case people want to know the exact values. I do that then take a pic of a few screen when i come across a crazy sound.

Love it! It sounds so real with a lot of 'in your face' attitude! I'm so GASed with Mono, although I have a Digitone and Octatrack. I'm thinking of selling both of them to fund a Mono MkII.

I was thinking of getting the digitone cause as good as the mnm sounds, I feel like it’s getting outdated with time (at least the UI)

@@FullCircle11 that is totally respectable the UI of the Monomachine is pretty obtuse. took me a month or two before I was comfortable with making stuff on it, and that was with reading the manual

As a monomachine owner, id say keep the digitone. it has a better FM engine and better programming interface. Also, Elektron Four is probably the best product Elektron has produced and you can get the mki for pretty cheap on aftermarket. Get one of those 👍. amazing versatility and sound quality in the Four. Monomachine does a lot of weird odds and ends kind of stuff but none of it particularly well. if you want to make really random glitchy harsh digital sounding music then it might be your thing. I have held on to my monomachine because of its uniqueness i guess even though i dont find it very usable. i probably should just sell it.

It’s a small fortune for sure especially with these resellers, but the more SOPHIE inspired producers using her instrument the merrier I say!
how does the model cycles stack up to this? I have an octatrack that I am learning to love for its ability to stack machines and effects in a chain via tracks but do you know if you can do any of this PC music wizardry on the cycles?

Oh definitely! I haven't made any vids with it but the other Elektron instrument I own is the Cycles. You can absolutely get PC Music sounds out of that thing- the kicks, snares, and metallic sounds especially are incredible, there's also additional functionality when it comes to the sequencer such as randomization and quantizing which the Mono does not have! In my mind the Cycles is like a Mono (6 tracks) with only the BBOX engine, with some fantastic QOL improvements

Ooo, I should mention the cycles also has an FM engine as well, which is essential for PC tones!

Someone in the previous video's comments was able to recreate the patch in Serum, so I'd be interested to see what comes out of Operator! Since Operator doesn't appear to have the same FM synthesis controls as the dynamic FM engine I'm using on the Mono, an LFO affecting the pitch of every oscillator could give you those same non-chromatic notes found in this vid, shorten the decay and load any of the amazing effects that come with Ableton (my fav is granulator) and maybe that'll sound similar?

don't get one while they're being sold for fucking insane amounts of cash!! It is a fucking shame that these sellers are deciding they'd rather mark up the price rather than get their machine in the hands of someone that's actually going to contribute to music

@@notinorderdecent I bought mine in October for $2k, which was after the seller (who was extremely kind I should mention) sent me an offer off the original price of $2200. Now, there is a listing on reverb for $2700, not including shipping!
